Im' a Master Smuggler/Pistoleer but after the slicing loot change I was thinking of going Smuggler/Rifleman.

Though I"m a master pistoleer I thought Rifle would be better for hutning dmg wise and hiding with cover shots.

What do most Rangers use for combat professions?

There are a few half decent combos out there, Rifleman, Carb and BH being the most popular. Personally i have a master ranger/master rifle and he does fine. Had a master ranger master bh and he was great too, you choice.

I've always played a Master Ranger/ Master Rifle and love the combination. One draw back to Rifles is that, Post-CU,we no longer have an AOE attack, I really miss Strafe Shot. In fact, Rifles really don't have any useful "state" specials like root, stun, dizzy, blind, annoy, etc. All of our specials are primarily "level of damage" based. But having hunted withGuildmates that run thespectrum of other combat professions I still love the pure damage dealing thatrifles give. A typical sequence for hitting higher level creatures such as Concealshot,Sniper shot, followed by a combination of Head shot and Startle shot (higher damage) or Head shot and Ranged shot (lower Action cost) will hand out nearly 10K points of damage with a good rifle making "state" specials a bit less important and meaning that I can still hunt most everything on Kashyyyk without food or armor. Combine the raw damage (and range) of the rifle with the future fixes we will get for traps (for applying states) and I think it makes for the best all around profession for the lone hunter.

The down side to rifles however is fairly obvious. The lack of AOE attacks post-CU really hurts. If I'm out hunting for resources it takes longer for me to clear out a lair of lower level creatures for harvesting than it would a Carbineer. Also, if you are going up against a higher level creature, say level 82 with 20K health, even with your best rifle you won't be able to bring it down before it closes to melee range. In this situation it would be nice to have root or snare attack (better than Leg shot) and so is nice to have a Pistoleer or Carbineer along.

Of course with all that being said, it all really comes down to what you like. One thing that has always shown me whatan actually well balanced game this is post-CU, is that every profession seems to have no shortage of players claiming their profession as the most effective. For every Rifle/Pistol/Bounty Hunter/Doc uber template out there, there is someone with a post about how to one-shot other players using the Rifle/Pistol/Bounty Hunter/Doc template.

Hope that helps. Good hunting and clear skies.

That's what traps are for

I agree completely. That's why I say a bit further down that Rifles plus traps,in my opinion,"will be" the ideal combination for lone hunters. Though, at the moment as we know, traps arelittle out of whack and most likely will be for a bit yet.

At least I assume from my reading here that most traps are still not working as intended but have to admit I haven't tested most of them for about two publishes now. Have they improved (Phecnacine Dart issuesaside)?

Be thankful that one of rifleman's few specials (you guys get significantly less than carbs, pistols, and even BH) isn't an AoE attack. I enjoyed the hell out of strafe shot prior to the CU. (And fan shot when I switched to pistols.) But now, AoE attacks really aren't worth the trouble, especially if you're solo. Riflemen are better off not wasting one of their five specials on an AoE.
