Hello Rangers,

I go by the name of Spa'an BeWoo on Ahazi and I have just become a novice ranger (partly through the repsec process but mostly through scout grinding).

I am also working on being a Bounty Hunter so as to support my Ranger profession however I am finding combat to a little difficult. For example last night I went out on my own for this first time as a novice ranger/novice BH (up until now I have been in hunting groups) and tried to take out a small encampment of hostile lvl 15 NPCs on Rori. What i found was that without any medical skills (I gave those up during my Respec as well) I was pretty much useless at combat and only managed to kill one before they killed me (and I should say that I am a lvl 29 and so these lvl 15 NPCs were grey - i.e. I only get 1xp for killing them).

How do the rest of you go without any medical skills? How do you stay alive long enough to kill your pray? I found that the stimpacks are pretty much useless because they have a timer on them which stops you from using them without a significant delay between healing-shots.

Any advice for a struggling ranger?

Cheers!

Fighting NPC's is always gonna be tricky for us. Luckily, they tend to walk around a lot. If you're patient and careful, you can almost always manage to get one alone. Well, if you're a ranged fighter, anyway. Here's an example: last week, I was doing the village quest where you use that tracking device to locate eight sith camps, which you then have to take out. Each camp has four or five sith guys in it, around CL 78. If I had tried rushing the camp, I would have been killed pretty quickly. Instead, I watched and waited, and every time one walked too far away from his buddies, well... he didn't make it back. I was able to easily solo the quest just by being careful. I also used my surroundings-- NPC's, I've noticed, aren't very cautious with their AoE attacks. More than once I couldn't get one sith guy alone, and found myself fighting two. (Sometimes three; every now and again picking them off one by one doesn't work out the way you planned it.) Anyway, I always check to see what animals are around before I fight, and during the course of that mission, there were always craggy bolmas or malklocs nearby. Whenever I got in over my head, I just ducked behind some big beastie, which would invariably gettagged by anAoE attack. Presto! Instant ally.

Oh, and even with the timer, stims help a lot.As your level increases and youcan use better stims, you'll see what I mean. I think you have to be CL 60 to use stim D's. In the meantime, use what level you can-- they do make a difference, especially if you manage to fight just one opponent at a time.

Remember, try to take on one at a time by waiting for one to distance itself from the others. I sometimes use an NPC pet to single pull.

Use the best stims available.

I didn't know there was anyway to fight other than single pulling mobs LOL

I pretty much stayed away from NPC missions pre-CU but find them a bit easier now.
I was Master Ranger with rifles 4,0,0,4 and medic 0,3,3,0 and had been for ages and I too have just decided to drop rifles for BH.
You can keep novice medic with MBH and MRanger, bacta sprays work well especially with some modded clothing, I am only BH 0,0,0,0 so far
so still have to be careful although my +5range cyber arm works very well for single pulling mobs

I try not to fight anything I can't beat... which sounds obvious, but the amount of times I've seen Lil' CL80 Timmy Tin-Can go screaming into a gang of CL80 critters and then wonder why he's the one that ended up dead makes me wonder about people. Really, it does.

I try to single pull, with a droid or pet, or wait for one of them to peel away from the pod and then kill it as fast as I can. Make it slow, make it dizzy, get it on the ground and blast it in the head as fast as possible. There's no 'finesse' in this, it's just a killing floor out there.

I'm never too proud to beat feet. If it's getting ugly I'll burst run out of Dodge, then give myself time to refresh and go back in and start over. This can be a bit of a pain when you get back and find the NPC's are back up to full numbers, but, well, it's all more XP, eh.

Oh, never fight on an empty stomach. You can't heal fast because you're to low level to use decent stims? Chew on some food that'll regen your stats. My toons live on blob candy, accagaram and anything I can forage, lol.

read up on Ruby Bliel as well. it's an Artisan crafted food that speeds up your stimpack usage timer.

Yeah, that's fun to do.
A friend and I were on Yavin when he was doing the one for the helth crystal. We got one of them shooting at us, and we were standing in the middle of a blushing jax lair. When the Sith fired and AoE attack, about 15 little kitties swarmed him and beat the crap out of him. Funniest thing I've ever seen!

Thanks for the advice, it is much appreciated.

I have been putting in heaps (heaps!!) of hours since my initial question and at the moment I only have Trapping IV and Master to go and then I will be all qualified. I also have decided to change mysupportprofession fromBounty Hunter role to Rifleman instead asI figured thatI would be able to get a little more raw power from it.I also like the idea of staying hidden and sniping - for me I find that itfits in well with the Ranger lifestyle.

So far I have learnt heaps about how to make the ranger profession work well in terms of tactics/trapping/camos/mask scent etc and I am greatly enjoying it. Many rangers have talked in the forumabout the effect of tactics and from my limited expereince I have found this to be very much the case. Also as I have become more powerful I think it is easier to go solo - I was trying to go solo when I was novice BH and novice Ranger and it was much harder than it isnow.

I think that perhaps the Ranger profession is one of those professions (along with BH so I have heard) that really comes in to its own when you learn HOW to use it properly (i.e. simply being a "Master Ranger" doesn't actually mean that you have mastered the profession).

Thanks again!
