Thread: Quick Question...Traps
Im a struggling Novice Ranger. I have been In Dathomir recently practicing my trapping skills on Big Game. I have seen some members from other proffessions using various techniques to subdure thier prey before finishing it off for the kill. To give you an example, Ive seen Pistoleers use Pistol Whip to hold off a Biz Natch from attacking. Ive seen a Rifleman use Warning shot to accomplish the same thing.
My question is this. Do we as Rangers have traps that can accomplish the same thing? Can I throw a trap at a Biz Natch that effectively freezes them in a spot (or slows them down) for a significant amount of time? Thanks for the advice.
P.S. Does anyone know of any good links to this type information?
Yes, we do have a couple of snare/root type traps.
The first, the Phecnacine Dart has a 'snare' affect - it slows the mob down by a goodly amount (pretty well to a standstill, with anything I've ever fought). The second, Adhesive Mesh, is more of a 'root' (I think it does damage, too).
I use the Darts almost exclusively over the Mesh, since the Darts have 5 shots, and the Mesh only 2. So the short of it is, I don't have any practical experience with the Mesh. I'd actually love to see a comparison of both types from someone that's regularly used both.

I loved the Adhesive mesh when I got it. It sucked cause it only had the 2 charges, but I loved how it rooted the creatures. I used it alot.
Then I read about the dart. It basically has the same affects as the mesh. The dart seems to last longer, and it seems like the mesh is too random. Sometimes the mesh holds for a long time, sometimes the mesh will get broken almost immediately. The dart seems to be more consistant. I haven't used it for very long, but from what I've read, and my expierence, that has been the case.
On the other hand, I don't know what it was, but I think that different creatures, may be more vulnerable to different traps. I was fighting dalyrakes on Talus (I think it was dalyrakes), fighting them one by one. I tried the darts on em, not one of them affected them. The meshes on the other hand worked.
Now, that test was on one lair of giant dalyrakes, and I didn't use traps on all of them.
So, this is what sits in my toolbar (as far as traps). 1 Adhesive Mesh, 1 or 2 Glow Wire (sometimes Mesh, sometimes Wire), and 2 or 3 Phecnacine Darts. I'll use the Glow Wire and Darts, and if the darts aren't working, I'll try the Mesh.

Interesting info on some traps not working on certain creatures . I think it may be explained , tho by the randomness of traps succeeding .
I use traps on every single animal I kill and have been doing so for a few weeks . I have the full Ranger Trapping boxes , all four filled up . It is my experience that the traps chance to succeed is frustratingly random to a degree .
For example , I have used the slow darts on just about everything . Every now and then I get failures . The other day I got three failures on a dark blue con MOB . Then , a few minutes later I got ten or twelve successses on a hard RED con MOB . So , you see it's very random to a degree . There is a formulae in place , it seems that a successful trapping is based on MOB difficulty , throwers skill , and then just random chance of hitting .
I would say that my LONG RANGE average throwing the slow dart is about 85% success rate . That's the average of , ya know , like thousands of traps thrown . I have tossed em at bunny rabits and failed , I have tossed em at Kimogilas and succeeded . It's just a long range pattern that ya have to be prepared to get those fails once in a while , even a few in a row . I don't think certain MOBs have a higher resistance to trapping than others ( besides the difficulty of the MOB ) but I do think we are succeptible to bad rolls now and then .
Info on the two traps that you are looking for .....
Phecnacine Dart is the most useful trap we have . In fact in my opinion it's the only one that doesn't suck . It's the only one I craft and use in the field . It slows the MOB down ..... and I mean WAY down , for a good long time . It's extremly reliable ( with good skills and a not so insanely hard monster ) both in the chance to succeed and in the time it keeps them nice and slow . It's about 18 seconds give or take , every single time no matter what you are fighting . In fact it's so consistent that you can count your shots before you need to throw the next one to keep the MOB slow . I have an internal timer now in my head , I've done it so much . Ya just get to know when it's time .....
also another tip .... if your going to be fighting from range , I would look at the MOBs meters away indicator near it's ham bar to gauge when the trap has worn off . It's the easiest way to tell until you get the internal clock going ..... just look at the numbers when it's slow . You will see them counting down very very slowly . Like , 56 ....................55 ............54 .......................53 ...............................52 then all of a sudden you will see them start to drop very vast . 52 , 51 , 48 , 45 . As soon as you see those numbers start todrain fast ya toss yer next trap while running in the opposite direction .
Doing this , you can fight even pretty hard red con MOBs with 10k ham bars in complete safety . As long as they don't have a ranged attack , of course .
Now as for the Adhesive Mesh trap ... I wouldn't spend much time with these . I find them relatively useless . They are inconsistent as hell . Sometimes a MOB is stuck in them for a good long time - up to 20 seconds or so . Other times the MOB will pull free in a second or even less . The only way you know the trap has even connected is the XP you get . So , that's a complete waste of a trap attempt in my opinion . Besides , you only get 2 A.Meshes per trap build , and they cost more resources than the P.Dart . So , you can go with a 2 shot deal that's inconsistent and unreliable , or you can go with the 5 shot deal that is rock solid and very dependable .
My success rate is about 85-90 percent , give or take ... now that I'm a master trapper . Funny , last night on Lok I was trapping a Kimogila and it was giving me 1885 points of trapping XP every time I got a Phecnacine Dart off on it . Got like 5 of them , so they are pretty reliable in a jam even against the godly monsters . Of course , the one time it failed I was eaten thanks to the Kimos teleporting ability which is just plain lame . But that's another rant ....
I would give up Warning Shot , I think that skill is way too unreliable . I can shoot a WS on a MOB and hit with the shot 5 times in a row , and it will still stand there chomping on me . Then when I hit with the 6th shot it runs away , then two seconds later it comes back anyway so what's the point . Way to unsafe for me .
Anyway good luck and good hunting and trust me .... Phecnacine Dart all the way .
Thanks for the info on the traps (it's more solid data on my limited experimentation). Actually did a little experimenting with the Adhesive Mesh traps myself last night. And you know what? They do pretty much suck. I'll stick to the Phecnacine darts for now.

Phecnacine Darts are the best. It's sad that the traps RANGERS get don't work. blah. I have also found that glow-wire meshes are nice in big long fights with lots of people. toss one on and everyone starts rocking a little better. very handy since im a creature handler.
Also, with warning shot, if you shoot them while they're running, they turn and attack. and it doesnt work very well on difficult mobs. only the joke ones that you don't need it one =) great huh?
