Thread: A little advice if you please!
I wonder if some of you seasoned professional rangers might give good reasons why I should take rangers as a second dedicated profession.
I am currently TK novice (0-1-2-1), novice Doc (1-2-1-1) and master scout. I am not convinced I really need healing skills as meditiation seems to fulfil this requirement, and considering ditching this for ranger with a little CH thrown in for good measure, but what are the real benefits of the ranger.... WHAT would make this the ideal companion to TKM (when I get there).
I read a post that suggested you can conceal yourself from a human players radar, is this true. I am fully aware of the trapping, camp and movement benefits, can you really sell me this profession.
Only been playing about three weeks so I appreciate I am still somewhat of a NooB, so even if it is obvious to you I may not know about it....so throw everything you have at me.
Many thanks in advance, if it is important I play on Eclipse as Kaderas
IMHO taking Ranger as a second profession and as melee player means you better stay a medic too. Max out Pharm so you can use Stim Cs and modified Ds.
Conceal does not take you off radar. Evil rumor, and your name still floats above your head. And as soon as you initiate contact, it drops, making you visible to everyone/thing... bad news in an aggro mob. The plus side is it works fine so far as I can tell and I have walked right through mobs with no consequences.
Being melee means you are nose to toes with large beasts, and you will be takinga fair amount of damage from some of them. The rifle/carbine/pistol rangers take damage, yours is only multiplied by the fact you can't run away and hurt them, youhave to stay in range. I can be running away and doing damage, you can only be running...see my point?
Not to say that many Rangers are not melee, and doing one hell of a job and killing all sorts of things. Just plan on keeping medic.
Just my opinion, sorry Mylar and Hrat, I still think melee = dirt naps.

I have been a master ranger/ close to master pistoleer for a while now. One of the good things, is that whenever I go to a planet, I get swamped with /tells asking me to join the group
from medics (the crafting station in my tents)
from CH's (track the babies)
from BE's (track specific animals)
from SL (they love the traps to supplement combat support)
whenever i walk into an advanced planet I almost never have to politely ask for an invite. If i do, if I say "Is there room in a group for a ranger?" then the /tells fly.
I can solo almost anything with good tactics and preparation. for the first time, I soloed a juvenile krayt dragon using nothing but scout traps, burst run, bleed, powerups and some good tactics. I was buffed at the time, that also helps.
I can forage for food to heal pet wounds and over all, despite that the devs are making up for an initially weak profession, we are getting better.
I cant see ever dropping ranger.

Keep it coming, this is good informative stuff for a newbie ranger
The bottom line is to think about your playing style and decide if Ranger calls to you....
actually, being a master ranger myself. i would say it may be a better thing for you to go TKA/Doctor. why? Dispite your meditation ability, you can always buff yourself before a fight and on top of that, heal yourself completely with an uber stimpack. There are more than enough TKA/DOCs out there that have soloed a Kimo, some even 3 at one go. Again it really depends on your play style and what you want to be for the game to be enjoyable to you.
Truth be told, I enjoy being a ranger because i like the tactical and exploratory aspects of the class. It forces me to check out the creatures im going to attack or are in my way, what creatures i need to avoid or am safe walking through and gaining information to best see how i should take my shot against them.
Functionally speaking, thenice things about being a ranger is the track abilities, conceal for your mates, terrain negotiation and camps. Its got hope to be a better class but we'll cross that bridge when we get there.
Remember though that if you enjoy being all powerful, classes like what i described aboveor evenmaster commando/CH dont have to worryso much about whats infront of them because they can pretty much cream whatevers in their way.Ive even seen a TKA/DOC hold down the imp outpost on dantooine when he got picked on by overt imps. and he wasnt evena master TKA yet either. pretty scary stuff.
If you do decide on being a ranger, make sure you know what you're getting into first and why you want to be a ranger. Ultimately the game has to be fun for you and the only person that knows what that is, is you.
My honest opinion: I would waitfor concentrating on a TKA - Ranger combination until they change the to hit bonus against creatures to include melee attack damage bonuses. As it stands, Rangers only get this bonus against creatures if they use ranged weapons.
However,my argument for the TKA Ranger combination is simply this. TKA's are almost totally self sufficient (or so I have read on the TKA boards). Combine this with some of the Ranger properties of being self reliant in the wilderness-- and I believe that it is entirely feasible to have an awesome do-it-all-alone-in-the-wild template.

start asking me to group.
Rangers really add a lot to any group. Now that the camo kits work
we have become VERY valuable.
Traps, although the useful ones are from scout, are amazing at Ranger level.
Its nice to be able to keep a creature at a distance while the gunners
mow it to pieces. Im a TKA so i dont use them that often solo.
The hide/meat/bone you harvest is nice and a quick way to earn a lot
of cash.
The camps Rangers make come in VERY handy for nearly everyone that needs to
craft in the wild. Doctors will normally poop themselves when you build a
high tech fb. That way they dont have to scramble to make a ton of stims before
the trip.
I can outrun a Wrix up a mountain.... that came in handy more than once.
If you are looking for a GREAT solo character that can kill everything it sees...
dont pick Ranger. If you are looking for a profession thats a GREAT compliment
to every other profession... then Ranger is absolutely the way to go!
Think about it. I can sneak up within 2m of a nightsister (most of the time) with
camo. Thats makes melee must nicer for a TKA.
Just my 2credits. I hope it helped you.
