Thread: Different suggestion for improved harvesting abilities

Just read through the "why I am not an outdoorsman" post. It struck me that there was the seed of a really good idea in it.

For creature harvesting we've already suggested that we be able to extract much larger quantitys of resources than scouts and that we be able to extract more than one type of resource.

If we really were serious about wanting to have an "arm" of the ranger profession geared to helping us make money from resource extraction, then asking for us to be able to extract creature bileor tissue, orperhaps other specialist orgainic "optional" components (of which a few more could perhaps be created)used in several of the crafting classesschematics, would make a clear distinction between the abilities of the scout and ranger and provide the ranger class with a more suitable form of income.

There are, after all, many different grades of tissue. If the ranger were able able to harvest a low / medium or perhaps every once in a while, a high quality tissue or bile(or other optional organic component) from a creature(since the ranger has no control over the lifestyle and health of the creature, the quality could/should only be generated randomly, however some locations/herds/flocks couldyeild better quality resultstill they become "skinny".

The initial impact on the economy would berangersbeing able to sellthose components and make a greater profit from there hunting expaditions, prices would initiallybe high~ishbut only the rare high quality components would be able ot maintain that price and as medium and low quality components would be more plentiful and suitable for use in the creation of bulk orders a lower more reasonable price would start to govern the low end of the spectrum.

Couple of things to bear in mind too, when referencing low, medium and high quality tissue it's all comparative to the creature killed.. even a lowquality krayt dragon "harvested" tissue will be better than say a high quality durny "harvested" tissue.

With the new chef recipies comming into our shops there will be a demand for chef's to be able to create factory runs of "enhanced" foodstuffs, the ranger could help meet that need in a more realistic manner with low and medium quality enhancements available to be sold in reasonable numbers, than just the 1 or 2 items they're likely to get from "rare drops".

Harvesting of these optional orgainic components need not begarenteed, if sucess was governed on skill or indeed even just a random 1 in 4 chance (just exactly how carfull can you be when youare killing a creature thats going for your throat, that you didn't hit the harvestable "bit" ?) they could reduce excessive quantities being collected without some sort of organisation or reall effort being put into it. (thus maintaining the reward=effort rule)

I realise too that BE's have tissue creation as one of "there things", what I'm trying ot do with rangers here is not steal one of there class benifits, there are many different benifits that tissues could give, rangers need not be able to extract tissues with the same benifits that DE's produce, nor indeed would they be able to gather these things in the same quantities.

Needless to say there are many systems that could be put in place to allow rangers to do this and still maintain a solid ballence within the economy, and not see truely "rare" dropped loot devalued. Likewise, if propperly concieved and managed it is unlikely to mess with there profession.

It sould be up the the develops to decide just what sort of system should be used for the actual harvesting process however, only they can actually see the numbers involved, so only from that vantage point can a decision be made, although if anyone can concieve a good method then please.. do share..

"Look! I got some krayt guts! U want them for 100000000k credits?"

Hmm...just doesnt seem right...but I do like the idea of harvesting more than just hide/bone/meat...maybe we could harvest a head or a skeleton and keep it as an item in our house...wait, wasnt that just mentioned in the Outdoorsman Vision?

Personally, I've never quite gotten the need for a BE to pull DNA from a live creature. Why does it need to be live? I'd think a Ranger would be the one to go trap the creature and bring it to the BE. Right now though, BEs consider taking up Tracking, and already have the benefits of Mask Scent, to be able to do this themselves. So I actually think Rangers should get either:

  • The ability to extract DNA
  • The ability to trap creatures into Statis and bring them to BEs
I'd love to hear from BEs though (besides my friends, who support the idea ). As to Ranger harvesting, there's a few ways to go in my opinion

  1. Increase our harvesting capability. At Master I think it should be close to 300% of what a Master Scout can harvest. This can potentially drive down the cpu though, since there's more supply. We'd end up doing the same amount of work since harvesting 10k in an hour for a good sale could turn into having to harvest 30k an hour for the same amount of money.
  2. Increase our harvesting while decreasing Scout harvesting. Same result as above but at less of a percentage
  3. Multiple harvests. This has been suggested many times. I was originally opposed to it, but I was wrong. While a mob is likely to only have one uber resource, there's plenty of need for grind-quality organics. The former would bring in high CPU and the latter could bring in the same net through volume. Plus, we'd be able to draw high quality resources for sales and low quality for our own craftables that don't require quality at all (Traps and Camps).
Personally, I'm in favor of #1 and then #3. If we're going to be the elite hunter, we need to be elite on a level that defines other advanced professions in terms of their skill points. Right now there's little reason to pick up Master Ranger, which is a shame, because except for Hologrinders, most Rangers I meet are Rangers at heart already

The idea sounds a lot like those medical components we occassionally find on humanoids.

I think the idea has merit, I'll write up a request for the SotP tonight.

Wasn't there something in The Outdoorsman proposal about harvesting trophies(skulls and such)? I thought I read something there about it.
