Thread: Something else a Ranger could do?

Hi All, I am or was a Master Ranger since November 2003, have recently retired to try my hand at underworld studies. (not holocroning) just trying something different. Will most likely come back to the fold soon.

But with the list of things that have been asked about for us rangers, Upgrades or changes to what we do, Is it not a good idea to give rangers the ability to search for resources like the artisan?

Ok maybe we dont mine them, unless we actually harvestors, but why could we not search with the same precision as an artisan? Are we not familiar with terrain, geology, etc. We can go places without getting killed. I think it would be interesting to add this to the Ranger class, maybe in terrain negotiation.

Just a thought. What do you all think?

I dont know about some things likes Metal or Fiberplast, but being able to harvest edible materials like Wheat or Water would fit in with the Ranger ideal. Maybe as a rare event when foraging, it gives you like 100 units of resources or something.

And I still think Rangers should have some cooking skill, but only out in the wild in their camps, not as a means of making them money, but just to provide them some food thats better then what they can forage for, when they are preparing to hunt something big. Perhaps it should decay fairly fast to discourage selling it to other people, you cook only what you need to eat at one time. And being able to harvest for food resources could fit in with some of their recipes. The cooks would still make their money off their food, because they would have better preservatives then us...heh... And their food would probably still be higher quality, but it would give us something useful to do in camps.

I don't know about the cooking, but I definately think we should be able to forage for flora and water...

Flora should be part of the schematic for camo kits, but ONLY if we're allowed to forage for it (sort of like medics have medical forage for some of their required items).

As for the cooking... I agree that it fits into the folds of the ranger template, but I also agree that giving us cooking ability is sort of like giving the BHs tracking... giving the abilities of one profession to another profession is never a good idea. The problem is that in the "real world," most vocations aren't so straightforward... there is a good deal of crossover and overlap. But for the sake of game balance, they just can't do it in a game like this, unfortunately.

It's an interesting thought, particularly for near-organics like foods, florals and water. However, it's only 15 skill points away currently, and I think the need to diversify is one where SWG shines over class-based MMOGs

But bounty hunters already have Tracking, at least, enough to do their missions... Why couldnt Rangers have just enoug cooking to be useful for themselves?

Funny I never thought of cooking, but that is a good idea too. It kind of goes with buffing up what Camps can do thread. We have these big camps with crafting stations and what looks like Barbaque pits, cooking could be interesting.

As for being 15 points away, I never seem to have enough points
Trying too many things all at once. As a ranger gets no real combat skills all other points have to go to some type of combat.

I think there should have been some overlap. The idea being that skill is good in the over lap state, but great in the primary profession state. Just a thought. Maybe too grandious a programing thing.

But these are more good ideas. As well as fixing everything that is broken....

I enjoyed ranger and will most likely head back later....After I help Jabba move some of those Alder....er um yeah those Sunflowers to his throne room....

Yea, except BHers have Tracking and weapons. But that's it. We have traps, camps, camo kits, faster crawling AND Tracking

Darned enter button.

I meant to say that we also have so many skill points left over, we're supposed to take on other things

I'm going to assume that you're not being sarcastic, and point out that the difference is that the BH's weapons (and the attached specials) actually work, and furthermore are useful when they are working.

Not that I don't love camps and camo kits (traps are a neat idea but poorly implemented, and faster crawling is a red herring... or is it an easter egg? Or a cookie? Oh man, I'm so confused , but the BH's abilities are a ton more useful, and just as cool (assuming all else is equal, ie your preference for each thing.... personally I think camps and camo kits are much cooler).

I agree with the diversification... although I think more importantly it encourages interaction between players of differen skill sets. If they want players to diversify more, the skill points should be at the top of the tree instead of at the bottom. We're not pigeonholed into a profession in this game, however with skillpoints being so high for the novice professions, we're very limited. Yeah, I know, "A jack-of-all-trades is master of none..." but in SWG, you can't be a "jack" of all trades. It's more like.. a deuce.

As for getting flora and water... the difference is that a surveyor would be harvesting the resource, whereas a ranger would just be foraging it. As I've posted elsewhere, much like the medic can forage for his medical resources.

Medical forage is useless, unless they've upgraded it since I last used it. You don't get enough of anything, your quality is unpredictable.. I don't know a single medic who actually uses it.
