Howdy. I've been interested in being a Ranger for a long time, and finally recently got the opportunity to persue it. My plan was to be a master ranger/rifleman. I looked forward to having the Master Ranger title. However, the more I examined the profession and the discussions on this board, the more I realized how incomplete/broken this profession is, and how badly it's been damaged indirectly by unrelated dev fixes. Specifically, traps and camps are worthless. If I'm a master rifleman, I plan to take out my prey before they see me, so why would I light myself up with a trap? The benefit is not worth the cost, even if the trap tree didn't cost any SP at all. Camps have no point currently past RP. Maybe some newb doc would make stims at a ranger's camp when I started playing last august, but now? And even if you needed camps to take out a bike, which you don't anymore, a basic camp would suffice. Again, not worth the SP. The camo, terrain, and creature harvesting bonuses at master would be nice, but at the cost of 28 SP on top of the 1? I'd rather just sell avian meat until I could afford the bonuses in skill tapes.
So I have decided that I don't want to spend the SP just so I can become more of a jaded martyr. I've really had enough of that from being a Jedi. I'm going to keep 3040 of ranger, and then go master rifleman, 4000 tka. Being able to sit down and magically cure wounds, poison, disease, and bleeding is much more worth it to me than camps, traps, and a few camo kits.
Devs, you really need to stop jerking the rangers around. My heart goes out for the old timers here. Please put ranger up as the profession after smuggler to get a revamp. Please make it more worth my time. I saw someone mention that Jedi are probably more common than master rangers. I bet they're right.

It's nice to have non-Rangers go "man...they are not NEARLY as cool as they should be"
Kinda proves our point when people from outside our close-knit community start asking the devs to give Rangers some loving. So thank you for your post. Sorry to see that you won't join the Rangers, but in the end, it's nice to know that people who check our boards can see our plight, even if they're not directly in the community.

Thanks for that uplifting post
I didn't do this post for the health of your inner child. I did it so that maybe, a little bit more noise about how broken this profession is would get to the devs. A drop in the bucket of course, but every drop counts. Trust me, getting this profession fixed would do much more for your wellbeing than putting a happy face on what obviously needs help.

This is exactly what I mean. Call me when the devs actually get around to reading and implementing at least a little bit of The Outdoorsman.

He read it!

Not every potential Ranger reads it, I'm glad you did!
Anyway, you'll know when it is time to come back to Ranger - just follow the massive surge of people trying to jump in when our cool-as-all-hell revamp comes out!

Hey..at least you realized it before making it up to Master. I worked to be a Master Ranger, held it for a while in hopes that they would implement all the ideas GreenMarine talked about, waited a bit after the Ranger patch, and when I saw that it looked like they wouldn't be getting to a full Ranger revamp anytime soon, dropped the profession with much sorrow in my heart.
