I wouldn't dream of stepping on Fred's toes, and I am not quite sure if this has been mentioned yet, but I will go ahead and post my idea anyway.
I recently had it pointed out to me that in EQ, a Ranger is the only person with a functional radar.
So, here is my idea taken from that.
Why not just nerf everyone's ability to have a funtional radar. Make it a Ranger only skill. This would, in effect, give Rangers stealth. They can see everything around them and those without the radar cannot, unless you are physically in front of them. I wouldn't think this would be terribly hard to do as they did something similiar with Image Designers. They took an already existing ability, stat migration, and made it the sole domain of the Image Designers. To go one step further with this, perhaps Rangers could have this ability only while in the wilds and to give something to Commandos, who I see as urban warfare combatants anyway, maybe they could have a working radar while in cities.
Anyway, just an idea.

Novel idea and it wouldn't be hard to do, but would be highly unpopular to nerf everyone else; especially not to even gain anybonuses for the Ranger profession. Better to actually make /conceal useful - i.e. never to break by the time your skill is 100+ and to actually work on NPCs.

Radar is what makes PVP in this game so cheesy. It should be removed, period. Waypoints are more than enough to get by. Anyway, wouldn't it be more fun to sneak around and surprise attack your enemy? also, a ranger could be useful in pvp groups. They could track the farthest distance, you could also let Squad Leaders have a similar ability and call it "intelligence" or something. The SL versionwould only be for pvp, mind you. ie only works when overt and only tracks overt players.
oh, just a sidenote: druids, bards and rangers all have track in EQ. Rangers can simply track greater distances.

The main problem with this is that a client side hack would easily reenable the radar. If the computer has a chance of needing to draw an enemy then the servers will send the data to the client. If the client has the data then someone could make a radar from it. To overcome this problem, the Devs just gave the radar to everyone.

The flames created by the SWG community if they took away radar abilities would rival those of Hell itself.

i think a lot of rangers agree with this idea, but most of us also think it could be too late to implement - without a lot of compromises...
check out this thread (if you haven't already)...
i think thisis one of the mostreasonableideas i have heard for scouts/rangers from the beginning of the game... it is probably the only one we would not have to back with any justification other than the definition of "scout"...

You must also take into consideration that stealth, as I proposed it, was to combat packet sniffers and "trainers" (process memory mapers) that add in the Radar if you are not given one in game. EQ has 3rd party programs that "reattach" the Radar to the game. It is the main reason they put it in for all in the first place: it is not fair to those that do not have it and to those whose class depends on its uniqueness.
Idealy, this would be a good idea, had it not been for hackers doing this. You could even remove it for everyone and cheaters would hack one in.
Only way to defeat it is data feed switching. Unfortunately the game has to be designed around that.

Rangers offering directions?
"Take a left out of the spaceport, then go up. *looks at compas, tilts head, squints eyes* Yup. Up.
Then go north a bit. Hang a right at the mission terminal and....you'll be as lost as I am"

Camo works for me sometimes and sometimes no....really needs to be improved...if a frigging master ranger cant sneak past a nightsister or krayt dragon..dammit then who can??? I mean cmon make it somewhat worth it to have the Conceal skill.
