The terrain on planets should matter. You should not be able to climb steep cliffs. When you start to climb a mountain, you can only go so far, than it is just too steep.
Put some POI and GCW targets at the top of mountains that have only one path that everyone can use. Also, put mountain chains that cut off entire sections of planets from the rest of the planet.
Now, for the new skill. Allow ranger the ability to find alternate paths up mountains.
Skill level 1: You can find a path and use it.
Skill level 2: You can move more quickly while going up the found path
Skill level 3: You can show the path to group members and they can follow you
Skill level 4: You can pass the speed modification to group members.

I think this would also add some desirability to Rangers in the GCW. If your target is at the top of a mountain, and they are guarding the only easy access route, find the hidden back entrance and come up that way.
The only way to get the parts of the map cut of by mountain chains is take the shuttle, or find a ranger to guide the way.

See? Good Ranger idea #44,546,235.
This is why I think Rangers may never get an update: every time they go "well lets' see if they have any suggestions on their boards"....they come over and sift through our forum

Dev 2: "well that Phenix fellow appears to have posted while intoxicated"
Dev 1:"holy crap! they....idea...ummm....there's like 4,000 good ideas here...we should probably do them all. "
Dev 2: that sounds like a lot of coding
Dev 1: yeah....let's go to the BH forum. No ideas there, just pointless whining. Much easier to code the removal of a requirement.

These do sound like the seeds of some really good ideas.
Im not sure how these areas would prevent people on speeders reaching, them... maybe a tie in to the ranger-only zones.
