Thread: New Ranger on Chilastra (How can you not love this profession?)

Igot Novice Ranger a few days ago because I was tired of playing a defense stacked Master Brawler/Master Fencer/Master TKA. Tanking everything in the game without a scratch gets extremely boring in a hurry, and since I have better things to do than give up professions all day, Jedi does not interest me at all.

Over these last couple of days I've done a lot more group hunts on Dathomir and have been reminded how much fun this game can really be. I don't know that I will ever be able to go back to soloing everything.

Just thought I would say hello, and applaud all of the devoted Rangers out there (holo-grinders, you don't count, and niether do the BH dabblers); this profession is incredibly fun despite it's minor drawbacks and quirks. Keep up the good work everyone, and if there are any other non-grinding Rangers on Chilastra, hit me up in game, I'd love to organize a hunt sometime.

Take care everyone, and keep the faith.

despite its minor setbacks? How can you say minor setbacks. They are MAJOR setbacks. We don't have anything that makes us good except the occasional track, even though that is useless past 250 meters. No one throws traps because they don't work half the time or take too much effort and give to few bonuses. Camps are just eye candy that offer no real benefits over the camp you get at scout. Harvesting resources is rediculous because if you have novice scout and all of the SP spent in combat professions, you can kill faster, meaning you get more resources then the double resources Rangers get. Terrain negotiation is cool, I mean, who doesn't want to be able to crawl fast? Lastly, the camo gear. No point in that, its too difficult to maintain them and masked scent with a small bio-engineered clothing bonus works just as well. Now I believe you when you say, Man, Ranger is soooo cool. That is what I thought too, I wanted to be a Ranger more then anything. The benefits however, do not out weigh the amount of SP you have to put in it. I dropped Master Ranger to go Smuggler till Rangers get fixed and I still use my Ranger abilites just as much as before I dropped it. I'm no Holol-grinder. I'm a Ranger at heart. Once we're fixed I'm coming back, but I'm going to have fun with other professions that at least offer some benefits till then.

i can say that they are minor setbacks because i haven't forgotten that i play this game to have a good time. major setbacks, by definition, would keep me from doing that. so what if camps are mostly useless now? it's still fun to sit around with your hunting party in a HTFB and shoot the **edit** while you wait for the group doc to get around to healing your wounds. this game isn't all about the90% advanced composite armor that your rifleman/combat medic is wearing while he takes out armies of other players without so much as a scratch. i don't know about you, but broken or not, i for one am proud to have the title "Ranger" floatingabove my avatar's head.

No matter what those Smugglers are saying, Smuggler is a fun profession. If I had 15 more skill points, I'd be a Master Ranger/Master Smuggler. The main problem with Smuggler right now is that it is not really smuggling. The rest of their skills work better than the Ranger ones (although that's not too hard). I received more tells from people needing my help in under one hour of having the Master Smuggler tag up than I've had from many months with the Master Ranger tag up. That alone tells you something about the usefulness of their skills (well, Slicing at least). I actually get a lot more tells if I put up my Rifleman tag than from keeping my Ranger tag up (some grouping requests, requests to help with missions they can't do, training, etc). Ranger, in my experience,is the most superfluous profession in the game right now (Squad Leaders do have a few skills that make smart players want them in their groups). The skill most people are interested in (/areatrack) is worse than just riding a speeder around. And I don't get any requests for tracking anymore anyway. But that doesn't mean that I can't enjoy being a Ranger.

I've noticed that, I used to get tracking requests but it seems that the population, on Farstar at least, have woken up to the fact that it simply aint that good, a number of speeders is far more effecient than my plodding about on my own...

I still want to be a Ranger, but dropped it as soon as I mastered it over2 months ago. It had no benefit to me or groups. Title just isn't enough. If I could support on a hunt or in a group it would be nice. The fact is that I cannot. Let's look at the lines.

1) Wayfaring

Camo isborked and has never worked as advertised. It is very hard to maintain and you must maintain it for your group. It breaks a ton, thus the challenge. Burst run efficiency is up, but that really only lowers the HAM use. When buffed this isn't an issue, you recoup the HAM quickly and it uses less because of the buff. You also have moreHAM to use so the dent is minimal at best. Crawl speed (Terrain Negotiation) is not very useful, unless you are a rifleman...maybe a Carbineer too. Perhaps it is usefulto aCH when trying to sneak-up on babies in high level mobs.

2) Frontiering

Camps that cost more in resources that don't really do much in terms of healing power for Docs or Medics are not that cool. With a med droid (all have them) they can heal wounds without a camp @ 110% of normal so all they need is a basic camp kit. There are the crafting stations in the HTFB, but I can get an equally effective station in my med droid, combat droid, storage droid, etc. More seats? Okay, there are plenty in the improved camp kit and you can always sit on the ground if really needed. Foraging bonuses are worthless. The only thing I foraged for is pet food, other than that foraged food doesn't do much for you. Now, I don't even need pet food. I buy cheap stuff from Chefs that actually provide bonuses to my pets.

3) Tracking

The only really useful line. Creature knowledge is nice, especially if you are a CH hunting for babies, but there are databases that supply that info. When I examine a creature I am looking for info regarding protections and vulnerabilities and AR level. Other than that damage range, specials, tamable, CL, etc really aren't that useful. Harvesting more is great, but @ 140 skill points used, I could spend some of that on combat and hit harder to kill more quickly, thus harvesting more over time. The to-hit bonus is negligible. Again, I could get some combat skill and increase damage, speed and accuracy to all things. Area track is great, but it was more novel than anything else. It is great for locating players, it was nice to find FS NPCs with the holo craze, it was nice to find a certain creature type, but it wasn't a necessity. If I wanted to find a player, I could /tell. If I wanted to find a certain NPC I could ask others, but typically I am supplied with a waypoint (If I was a BH I could send out the droidz). If I wanted a particular creature type, I could get those missions. Cool idea, but it isn't needed because of other game dynamics.

4) Traps

I don't think I need to say that this is absolutely useless by design. We are given terrible traps in the ranger line, and we are only given 2 of them. The sonic pulse does very little and the flash bomb has the same effect as bone spur traps. I only found the phecnacine dart and adhesive mesh traps to be useful. They slowed the speed needed to close the distances when I didn't have the combat skills. By the time I was a ranger I had tanks (melee guys in groups) to deal with that. The trapss and effects were not helpful in the grand scheme of things. In fact they were useless. Using adhesive mesh or the phecnacine dart of larger/harder creatures does not work. Even at master you cannot snare a rancor, etc. Rescue doesn't work as intended and only works if the other person is /peace(ing) like crazy. When it does work, why the hell would I want that thing chasing me. I don't have any defensive bonuses to protect me. So, I get to waste my burst run to get away and then get to run back to my group. That's about as fun as half a frisbee!

At master you get the dathomir camo kit....SHWEEEET! Not really. You also, finally, get +10 ranged and melee defense. Not so great considering I can get those and then some more by taking any elite combat profession and I get more of those defenses and other nice bonuses with them.

I would love to be a ranger again, but it needs a major overhaul. It needs some more flavor and uses, not just a furthering of the scout tree class. Many suggestions have been made, but we got our "love" (camo kits and areatrack) and now we must wait for other classes to be taken care of. It sucks, but it's true.

I am glad you are excited, I was excited by the prospects too, but I can do all important things in ranger (terrain negotiation on your feet, harvesting and mask scent) with my scout profession. Not so great when I can use those skill points to grow in other professions that make me more useful in a group and allow me to explore more (dungeons and adventure planets). Isn't exploring the territory of the Ranger? Well, I am explorer and ranger didn't help me do it any better, in fact, it inhibited me in more cases than it helped. I hope that this will change and I am sure that it will, eventually. I will comeback someday when I can support like I hoped I could.
