Thread: Going Ranger in an attempt to be self sufficient.

Im Tired of waiting in line to get buffs, going to dantooine, killing quenkers for 2 hours, then having to call it quits.

Im already almost a master scout, and now I'm planning on going for a template that can sit in the fields of dathomir for days harvesting till a resource shift.

Sadly, if I want to have any combat skills, I cant get master Ranger, but I can get a good chunk of it.

As of now I'm planning

Master Rifleman
Ranger 4040
Medic 2043

This would be with a droid that has medical use, a medical crafting module, a general crafting module, and a harvesting module incase my deceased target is inbetween several Rancors (better safe then dead)

I chose Master Rifleman as it gives me the chance to keep my distance from my enemy, and hopefully keep outta sight with /concealshot and /sneak.

Wayfaring branch in Ranger so that I will have my camo kits ( I realize I wont be able to make dathomir kits, but it is to my understanding that with level 4 wayfaring I can use them)

Tracking 4 so that I get as many +harvesting mods as possible.

and 2/0/4/3 so that I can build my own meds, use them, and heal my own bleeding.

I'm posting this looking for any support or tips I can get.

Thanks

Some questions and observations-

If you are rifleman, why so much medic? If you stay away like you want, and use droids, you won't need all that much medic. I would stay at 0-0-0-whatever you want. You can make Stim Bs for quick heals, which you can use at Novice level. Good ones work well. Besides, camps will help heal you, even the scout level ones. Get some mod'd clothes and you are all set.

You do know camo does not effect conceal shot? As in no stacking, at least from what I understand. Use maskscent instead, cheaper and easier.

Tell me you don't have ranged support eating points? If so, drop it and use the points somplace else - I don't think you do, just saying.

Now to your basic premise - hunting and buffs. Coming up the trees, I seldom, read that as 99.99% of the time, used buffs. I was taking on torturs, quenkers, savage quenkers, tortuns, gurrecks - pretty much a slew of white to maybe red cons all the time, unbuffed, unarmored. Yes I use weapon power-ups. And I was using good/quick/hard hitting weapons. But the main thing is I was using the maskscent/healthshot1/healthshot2/peace (Pistoleer) method and drawing one creature at a time. I used a lot of pdarts (slows them) and glowwire (drops resistance) and shot through quite a few pistols, but I did a boatload of missions and maxed pistoleer finally. Buffs are nice, but I didn't use them, or spice. I do use food buffs now, but not on a continual basis. For a standard PvE hunting trip, I don't bother.

Self sufficiency is tough. Gotta have weapons, unless you are TKM and even then, a good set of vibroknuckles is nice. Armor - not for ranged people, melee you gotta have it. There is one point there, either you buy weapons or armor. Clothes are a lesser point. I am low enough in medic (novice and one box) I drop it and get artisan, make some cheap clothes and drop it and get my medic back. Or you can wear looted stuff - just make sure you wash it first.

Oh yeah, metal and poly. I have harvestors, altho no surveyor. In an earlier post I told how I just dropped 3 wind generators and 3 harvestors and take what I can get. Works for me, and I sell whatever I have a ton of for spare cash to buy weapons.

I tend to think I am pretty self sufficient - to a point. I do buy meds, and chef food, and weapons, and BE mod'd clothes - or I trade for all of the above. Money is no big deal, 7 mil and climbing - I do a lot of missions. I tip entertainers to heal my BF. But by and large, I can go on a 6 hour hunting binge (and I have, much to my wife's dismay) and not hit a town once.

Good luck, let us know how ya make out.

With higher pharmacy I can use higher stims if I ever wanted to buy them, and camps dont heal wounds.

Yes, I know camo does not effect concealshot, but conceal shot rocks for combat. And I dont like being aggroed unprepared, so theres where camo comes in.

When I say self sufficient, I mean able to survive by myself. I realize I have to go to my local weaponsmith every now and again to buy a new gun, or clothes.

Well, camps do heal wounds. They just do it slowly. As for camo, it won't help that much over mask scent. The main thing with being self sufficient is adjusting your HAMs and using tactics. A Rifleman should stay back and not let anything get close. A TKA should powerboost and get armored up. The Ranger skills won't really help all that much with it. The combat skills are much better at keeping you alive.

I too am tired of waiting for buffs and all that. Plus the parts or Ranger that makes it useful are in one tree and thats the harvesting mod. And barely useful at that. My template is Scout 4-0-4-0, Master Medic, Novice Doc,thinking maybe 0-2-4-0 so I can apply low level buffs(1800 range), Master Rifleman and as much Creature Handler as I can get since I am just itching to get a wasteland cupa as a mount.

Using Veghash and a high level harvestign droid will get you close to what a Ranger harvests. After all its only a 30% increase. AS for camo.. I found that it breaks often and its a waste of resources. Mask scent does just as well.

JBMat, I was am envious of your ability to go without buffs.. could you share how you have your stats migrated? I am at Health 750/400/400 Action(same as health), and Mind is 1100/600/600.

Mask Scent does not work on Nightsisters. But camo doesn't always work on them either. I'd rather be able to expect a Nightsister to attack than to have it be a bit more random.

As for HAMs, I get away with 600/500/400 600/750/500 950/600/500 (I think--that is maxed Bothan secondaries, 600 HA, 950 M). This setup lets me take on some Nightsisters (probably up to the Nightsister Ranger level) without buffs or armor (although they can screw me over with force powers some of the time). Ancient Bull Rancors and such are doable unbuffed but take a lot of work (mostly auto attack, use suppression fire and warning shot to keep them away from me, along with running over hilly stuff). The main trick for me is to not let anything get in striking distance (although I can take on ranged NPCs as long as they can't one or two hit me). If anything does get close, it needs to die quickly. The main problem with fighting unbuffed isn't the HAM, it's the tactics. My 750 Quickness is somewhat pointless for a Rifleman. But I just like having it.

I would honestly drop the camo line...

camouflage is not noticably better than maskscent, and its resource heavy. With the extra 15 points available, you can add some other skills in another skill.

Yea, I'm at a loss as to why you feel that by getting ranger you'll have less reliance on buffs. The only thing at all in the ranger tree that would help with that are a couple very small defensive bonuses at the master ranger level (which you won't be getting anyway) so I think the whole premise is faulty. The ranger traps certainly won't make you get hit less, nor will cammo.

The other comment I'd make is that I don't think havingorganic chem3 in medical is really of much use. If you have all that medical you're going to want to buy some good stimpacks and the ones that you'll be able to make yourself will be worse than gawd-awful. True you'll be able to make wound packs-a and very slowly heal your wounds after battle, but since you'll need to buy stimpacks anyway why not wound packs too? One crate of each is for all practical purposes a "lifetime supply".

Hey Kai -

I am a human, with my stats set about all even. 800 for health and action, about the same if not a lil less for mind (no freaking jokes) and my sub stats are all in the midranges, I think - nothing great, nothing really low or high.

The trick is aggroing one at time, staying awayout of melee range and using traps to slow the beasts to get more shots in. I am a pistoleer, I have fast weapons - sliced - made faster with powerups. I am not above running off some to heal (stim bs), or slug down some blue milk to heal my mind to heal my butt. It's the -bleed one, peace, here he comes, pdart, shoot, glowwire, run and shoot - method I use that works for me. Honestly, I have to heal me, no one can target me to do it most of the time.

It's call shoot and scoot, I stand still only for the first few shots, thenoncemy target aggros,Iam moving, tossing traps and shooting the entire time.

I saw it used on grondas a long time ago. I have used it a lot since. The lair is your focal point, fun around it and you make out.
