Thread: One of the biggest problems with Ranger

One of the biggest problems I see with the Ranger class in SWG is that there is no survivability factor. What I mean is, no matter whatclass you are, the wilderness is never a threat, only the mobs that you may encounter. This isn't good, if your entire profession is dedicated to surviving in the wilderness.

For example; Imagine you start a brandnew character on a new server. On this new server you have a benefactor who gives you a full suit of uber composite armor, buffs you to the teeth and hands you a nice new AV - 21 landspeeder. You could now go wherever you wanted to without fear. Granted you wouldn't be able to kill anything, but with all your amenities you could cross all of tatooine and never die. The only thing you'd have to worry about it is some tought spawn, like a Krayt or something, and even then you'd be able to outrun it with your speeder, armor and buffs.

That whole scenario is sad but true, if you ask me. If you were running really running around thesands of tatooine, the last thing you would worry about is some "rare and fabled"Krayt Dragon snacking on you, because the desert would kill you first. That is the problem with SWG. It's so one-dimensional, combat numbers vs more numbers, the environment never has anything to do with it. When was the last time your +95 terrain negotiation saved you?

If thewhole purposeof our class is the ability to adapt and survive in the wilderness like no other, then the wilderness ought to be something worth our skill points. As itis right now, any idiot can run around doing whatever he pleases, which doesn't really leave a whole a lot of room for a Ranger.

I was kind of saddened when they added the summon anywhere ability for bikes and droids.

As for survivability, the only thing I personally worry about is being ripped off my ride by a squad of troopers who want to rummage through my belongings and turn me Overt.

yep. this is the reason we want weather to affect your HAM pools and give BF/wounds. Rangers would be given a toughness to these things, and would be able to make camps to protect against such events

I 100% agree. And unfortunately as it stands anything to get us back to where we were when everyone was new and it WAS hard would involve nerfing EVERYONE hardcore. And that would not make people happy at all. I think its the reason many of us are secretly hoping the Combat Rebalance will be the nerf to end all nerfs.

Nerf everything. I couldn't care less. It is direly needed and it's going to happen hopefully with the CB. All these new punks come and trollthe boardsand complain about how the solution to buffs is simple. They say "use them if you want, don't use them if you don't want to". For about a half a second that sounds right, but then you remember that these types of games have to have level playing fields for all. This kind of optional situation would kill pvp worse than it is, and create a gap in achievement that would be unbeneficial to all.

The newest fad (atleast on my galaxies board, a great hive of scum and villainy), is to state when your account is cancelling. I love it. I really get a kick outta it...

THEY ALL KNOW THERE ISN'T JACK COMING OUR WAY in terms of new, ORPG's. Everyone is coming back from WoW beta and whatnot, and boy did it suck! now all those fools who smack talked how much galaxies sucks and how they were never coming back, are allll back. And this is something that's existed for some time, the "God I hate the devs and I'm going to leave this game soon". Very few people have actually executed their plan and not come back. It's just a fact. so any discouraging talk that we hear about everyone leaving is untrue, if it was, they all would've left months ago. Everyone knows this game needs work but we also know it has the most potential of them all.

I agree that there isn't much coming at least on the near horizon...or I should say nothing that interests me.

EQ2 looked great, and the video trailers were somewhat inspiring but being a 3yr EQ veteran I'm somewhat burnt on the fantasy games. I still think the second best thing to Star Wars is pre-Atlantis Dark Ages.

Combat Balance will prove interesting. What will the new FotM be? How man Swordsmen will vanish? What will be the "powergaming" profession"? I think the three possible things I'm most looking forward to are A. Not killing myself using special attacks, B. Wearing armor without massive HAM penalties, and C. Revamping buffs. Whether or not any of this is on the agenda I don't know, but it would certainly make my day.

Oh dear god I hope 90% of the Swordsman right now drop it and never come back. I've been a Swordsman since I started playing and that profession has gone so downhill, I cringethinkingabout it.I haven't beenplaying 'since day 1' so to speak, but I've been around long enough to remember back when the game was hard. When you didn't just run around the middle of the desert on tatooine alone cause something would probably kill you. In those days mask scent might have actually been worth something if it prevented that angry mobfrom agroing andkilling you. Now the game has gotten so out of whack, none of the professions are balanced and combat has just gotten stale.

I remember when I would go for weeks without seeing another swordsman, orany other melee classes really. The rangedvs. melee balance was much more appropiate then, and to be a succesfulmelee fighteryou had to be pretty smart, or insane, or some combonation . Since then however, buffs have completely thrown the cost / benfit ratio out the window and everyone has become overpowered, especiallly melee.

I too hope that the combat balance will drasticallly change things. I want this game to be a challenge again. I want the creatures I hunt to be respected and feared, not just bags of meat waiting to be harvested. I wanta sense of pride in being a Ranger, and a Swordsman for that matter, knowing that my professions are actually worth something and take a bit more than the best macro the play.
