Well, I can't answer your question for you. Why not?
because Ranger is an experience. As many of us say: Ranger is a lifestyle, nota proffession.
What do you want to do in this game? Are you a roleplayer? Do you prefer PvP or PvE? All of these are questions that I would need to know before I answerred your question. Personally, I think Ranger is one of the best proffessions to master in the game. Why? Because, until recently, they were very rare. Jedi's are now using Rangers to help them find their quest things, but I can honestly say that many Rangers who are Rangers on their main toon, find it the most rewarding experience.
Here are a few things you should know:
It's a lot of skillpoints to master Ranger.
If you want to be Uber, you're probably not going to want to be a Ranger. You can stack lots of defense mods with other proffessions.
As a Ranger, you will be a part of one of the tightest communities in the game.
That's about all I can tell you. If you're looking to be good in PvP, you'll probably not want to be a Ranger. If you like hunting for the thrill of hunting, and you often go out unbuffed, you're probably going to fit in well here.

Depends... do you want the prestigious title or not? Do you want to be able to harvest a ton with or withouta droid? Does the wilderness lifestyle appeal to you? Do you want to be able to pet rancors? Does the idea of being a wanted profession appeal to you? Meaning do you want to make a living hunting for docs, chefs and the like? Or do you want to just track things whether for yourself or others?
Master is awesome that's all I'm going to say. Plus when you're a master you can get that dathomir cammo kit. I've been playing two months only. I just mastered Ranger recently and I'm still finding fun things to do with it.
On the other hand the Ranger lifestyle doesn't appeal to everyone. Some just want to be able to track. If that's you then either 0040 would work or 4040 is another popular set up from what i've seen. The first allows you to track anything, including player toons. The second allows you to move up hills and rough terrain much faster and gives you the same tracking advantages as the first one.
Personally I would recommend master ranger. But then again I like having to use tactics to kill something, like sneaking up to it instead of decimating it.
What I'm going to say before anyone else refers to the stickies above... is this.
The choice is yours. That's something that many wise rangers told me when I had a similar question. Think about that sentence and within it you shall find your answer. The choice is yours...

I think the key to this game is to take your time and have fun. If I have the points I always like to Master, and if I don't think it's worth the points I start unlearning.

I am in the game for mainly roleplay , i definetely don't just want to master it for a title. I want to have the fun of tracking creatures in roleplay events and such but what i'm wondering is not being master going effect ranger capabilites. Will i be able to track the same distance in tracking 4 if i became master. Tracking is one of the reasons i most want to be a ranger but i will be doing the other trees aswell.

you have no idea. to get a good data spread, I started in moenia and aimed my toon (a 'dosh named 'Fanned Rawl') at theed.
macro crawlspeed
/prone;
/pause 60;
/prone;
/pause 60;
/prone;
/pause 60;
/prone;
/pause 60;
/prone;
/pause 60;
/way;
/macro crawlspeed
the repeated /prones are to correct a posture change (usually due to crawling into water, then swimming, then returning to standing/running when making landfall). the macro dropped a WP for progress every 5 minutes (average of about 450m each WP).
unfortunately, poor Fanned only managed to crawl about 3km before being detected by Maulers... apparently they didn't get the memo about the crawl speed test.
this is what happens when they kill TC (on the 4th, and down until at least tomorrow) and start putting those stupid frogs on temporary servers.

Zaw, you are a sad, strange person...
And i'm just jealous that I'd not thought of that first, lol.
Weirdly thick atmosphere was creating terrible lag last night, probably all that bated breath (certainly nothing to do with the hardware, software, underwear or anything else JtL-shaped, oh no) So I was having great fun with 'burst' crawling.
Go prone, kill target, hit numkey to head towards corpse to harvest, F1 to stand... toon stays prone for most of the 60m but suddenly bursts into hypercrawl, covers 40m in 2 or 3 seconds. Looked funny as heck, tho a wee bit irritating.
Hunt partner was rofling at my toon's behaviour. He could see him suddenly warp from A to B and sometimes saw him crawl backwards towards the startpoint.
Oh, and crawling into water had me stuck to the bottom of the river then suddenly shooting forward 40m and swimming like I was in the Olympics.

As many have said ranger is not the type of proffession that is "better" at master or the type where you can "dabble". All Ranger is is what you make it. Just do what you enjoy doing with it and get what you get.
If you harvest a lot then you will be able to pick up to 4040. If you like camping then you will sooner or later get Frontiering 4. If you trap creatures then oyu will get Advanced Trapping 4. I personaly do all of the things rangers do and therefor have all 4 trees and master.
Of coarse by getting Master Ranger you get the rare and glorious Master Ranger title and badge.
In the end you will probably never want to get rid of any skills you get.

The tracking skill doesn't improve after tracking 4. There's a common misconception that master rangers can track things better than a 0040 ranger. There's no bonus at master level.
If you want to crawl fast and use camo, take up the first skill box. If you want to set up neat looking camps that have limited purpose, take up the frontiering tree. If you want to throw the same traps that you used in scout, but with slightly better effectiveness, pick up the trapping line. If for some reason all of the above appeals to you, master it.
As was said above, why not just master it and then drop what you don't like or won't use?
