The best combat profession for Ranger is the one which you feel most comfortable in, the one which you enjoy. There are supporters of both melee and ranged combat, each having their advantages and disavantages.
You are already a pistoleer. That will certainly see you managing to handle pretty much anything up the very toughest creatures. Learn to use traps, terrain, tactics and you'll do fine.
As for 'grinding' ranger. Well, if you've 'got' to...
The two Scout XP lines: OK, you did scout? It's just the same, kill lots of big stuff, the higher the better. Harvest it and earn Scout XP. That's the easy part.
Wilderness/camping, apparently using a faction pet, calling it from your task bar over and over, will get you the xp for camps faster. (Forum Survival Hint: Don't ask about a Camping Macro. I'ts not worth the effort. Just do a quick forum search here and you'll see what I mean).
Trapping? Get a suit of armour, get a set of buffs. Get / make a crate of traps. Again, do a search here on the forum for info on what types of traps. The level of creature you can successfully stick a trap on will increase as you progress. You'll soon be sticking wire mesh and darts on Grauls.
There's much more information in the FAQ, which is stickied right up at the top of the forum: http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=ranger&message.id=82452
Best of luck.

I can't understand the grinding part.
If you use traps when hunting, and with pistols you damn well better, you will max trapping before you max either of the other two lines. Well, you gotta make traps. Take all the stuff you harvested and sit in camp. Craft traps and camps. When you have enough, craft in practice mode. Craft while waiting on shuttles. Surprise, you maxed camping about the same time you max out the other two lines.
What to hunt? Simple, bigger the better. I seldom use buffs or armor, you don't have to if you use traps. Also, pick on stuff that is not social and doesn't DB.
With the changes they made to allow for crafting camps/traps count towards survival, you can easily be a master in a week or two of casual play.
Oh yeah - go see all the planets and learn something while hunting. Have fun. Hunt with a group of noobs. But make it fun.
BTW, Enraged Kimos give 2k scouting xp for harvesting. Forget about sticking a trap tho.

I sold 5k FP the other day to someone who wanted it for some reason or another.
Grind Imp FP -- go to Talus. One of the POIs is a load of rebel troopers just wandering around looking dumb.
And K, I hear tell there is a new city on Talus that has both Imp and Rebel bases. Haven't been there yet. And did you get Ace?
