Thread: A Ranger's Place in the Scheme Of Things
Currently, when I see groups forming, or PA's recruiting, or people running around looking for something they need, I hear just about every profession being sought after, needed, and coveted.
But notours.
Look at some other professions. Master Doctors have the ability to do +2500 HAM to players for more than an hour, and they can revive slain players. The other night I participated in a PVP battle where the presence of 3 doctors on one side made that side completely dominate the battle. The fact is, Doctor is a highly SOUGHT AFTER and NEEDED profession. Any time a group goes out, someone's gonna ask probably say, "lets try and find a doctor, we could really use one of those." Smugglers, with their combat abilities, ability to make spice, and slice weapons and armor, definitely makes them useful. One of them definitely rounds out a combat group, or hunting party.TKA's are probably the most sought after, in demand combat profession in the game. Their ability to knockdown makes them extremely powerful (I personally think TOO powerful) in PVP, and pretty useful in PVE. Anyway, the point is this: not ONCE have I ever heard someone say, "looking for a ranger," "our group needs a ranger," or "**edit** I wish we'd had a ranger with us."
Not that this profession is useless. It certainly isn't. It just isn't useful enough, in my opinion. I think every profession should be something sought after. Every profession should have times when people say "hey, we need a (insert name here)."
How could this be done for Rangers?
Make the traps work, more effectively, and possibly add a new one.
Make Traps work in PVP against creature handler pets.
Make the Examine Creature ability more useful. Have it show some useful information that cannot be obtained by anyone else. Perhaps an ability to determine quality of hides and bone BEFORE you attack the creature?
Remove the /rescure ability, and replace it with something else, or make it more useful, other than for screwing with bounty hunters.
Bring back the /conceal ability, rangers should have the ability to sneak around, make them able to have limited concealment from others in PVP (except from another ranger). This alone would give groups reason to bring a Ranger along (to avoid being snuck up on by another ranger).
I think the most unique and distinctive feature of our profession is the elite camps. I think something should be done to improve those, make them something that people would say "whoa, we need to have a guy that can make those"
A friend and I came up with a decent idea. What if Master Ranger got a new camp type that had some new features. Perhaps some limited defensive ability such as stunning creatures that wander close to them.
But by far the best idea is this: add to the Master Ranger camp, a portable cloning facility. Players would still have to pay to clone here (perhaps even each time they cloned, instead of just once), and would STILL incur wounds when doing so, but they would be able to not have to make the trek back to town (until BF build up, that is). This would make Rangers what they are supposed to be: the masters of exploration, able to stay out of town for long periods of time, and would give them a potentially useful support role in PVP, that would NOT be overpowered. If Master Doctors can do corpse revive, how would that in any way be any less overpowered than cloning WITH WOUNDS at a ranger camp?

Or two new traps, one for each tier of the Trapping Tree. Definitely a must though.Make Traps work in PVP against creature handler pets.
Agreed, this would make Rangers highly sought after in larger PVP groups. It would give us the ability to neutralize the threat of uber creature handlers by being able to slow/paralyze and make them more vulnerable to attack.Make the Examine Creature ability more useful. Would be very nice. Would also be nice if they fixed the features that are already in there.Remove the /rescue ability, and replace it with something else, or make it more useful, other than for screwing with bounty hunters.
I sort of like the Rescue ability. In certain situations in can be extremely handy. I know I use it all the time to lure aggressives off my friends, or to stop and NPC from slaying my incapped friends. And besides, it's fun to screw with BH's.
It's a good skill, but only if you know how to use it effectively.Bring back the /conceal ability, rangers should have the ability to sneak around, make them able to have limited concealment from others in PVP (except from another ranger). This alone would give groups reason to bring a Ranger along (to avoid being snuck up on by another ranger).
After hearing the scout responses, perhaps they will bring this ability back - as they will need something to use Camouflage skill points.
The PVP idea is excellent and you're right, it would make us highly sought after, although I always hesitate putting other Rangers in the line of fire, even if they're on the other side.I think the most unique and distinctive feature of our profession is the elite camps. The cloning in camp idea is a very good one and rather talked about. It may not exactly be feasible to allow us to set up cloning stations in the middle of nowhere though. Perhaps the camp could be altered, so that if say, a Combat medic drags a player corpse into a camp, they are resuscitated. Or if you plunk the camp down on top of or near the player they are also resuscitated. Only thing is, and ability like that would detract from the the usefulness of Combat Medics.
