Thread: Why am I a Ranger again?
I'm new to the class, but this is my question.
Are you looking to PvP or to enjoy what you play? Are you playing a Ranger to get some edge(it sounds to me that you are trying, since you compared the Ranger abilities to other professions' abilities)?
The bottom line is pretty simple in any RPG. Are you playing for power or are you playing to enjoy what you play? Are you trying to take out Master BH's or are you looking to go out and hunt all day and come home and make camps with your harvests? For me it's the latter. My answer to my own question was simple for me. I play Rangers in every RPG game because I love them. I like being a loner. I've never been one for PvP either. While I realize a lot of players out there min/max to get "uber" characters, I've never been interested in that. I don't enjoy the Ranger because of the abilities they get(in fact the harvest skill is enough for me to enjoy them). I enjoy them because they are fun to play. And I realize I will never be able to take out a Krayt Dragon or take on a squad of Stormtroopers. But then again, neither of those are on my agenda for the day.
So, to enjoy what you play, you really need to ask yourself what it is you seek from the Ranger.
Well being Ranger CH (and lets face it not alot else) I am inclined to agree with Puck this is an RP profession unless you have some serious combat skills behind you I cant harvest as quick as my Ranger/Master Swordsman friend, But I have seen the game from a whole different perspective.
I wander around and speak to people, I have seen sunrises on dathimore (okay sunrise may be a stretch have heard the music) and enjoyed the outdoor experience and not just as somewhere to cross to get to a mission.
I still use a mount (but have a bike for those get the hell outta there quickly times) I dont see the landscape flashing past so the server doesn't have time to update its fine and because of this I managed to tame about 11 rancors in the space of 2 hours on Dath.
So if you like a slower more chilled game. Were the place to be
Sorry, that came off wrong. I do enjoy playing my Ranger about 90% of the time and I wouldn't say I'm a power player. I have been working on Ranger since launch day (with the exception of a two month break) and just got master less that three weeks ago. I guess my biggest gripe it that we spend an awful lot of skill points to be rangers. When it comes time to battle and defend your side of the GCW, we are relegated to sitting in our camps and hoping for the best. If we even attempt to defend ourselves or faction members, POOF, no more camp. I do have a field BASE don't I? Perhaps I should couple my Ranger with another non combat profession since we aren't given much head room here. What is your Ranger combo?
I think that since I am a Master Ranger/4-3-3-4 carbineer and willing to drop carbineer over ranger I think it shows which is more important to me. I do really enjoy being a Ranger and I'm not looking for it to be an uber combat profession, I would just like some kind of role in the GCW.

I guess I'm just looking for someone, anyone to give me a validation in my Master Ranger status.

What you imply by this question is that being a weakling is somehow more fun then having abilities and being adept. I often find this attitude when people talk about gameplay styles and try to justify their style of gameplay. Why would you imply that the fun-ness is somehow inversely related to how skilled your toon is?
To Rogue and whoever else I read that I came across wrong with, sorry if it seemed I was implying that you were a power gamer. I can tell you're not. To the other person, no, it's not an issue of weak vs. power. For me, an MMORPG is an alternate life, an alternate universe. It's a chance for me to escape RL and live in another life. Some people consider MMORPG's games like any other. And others consider them a chance to escape. I guess for me, I try to give my characters life, I try to bring them to life at least for a while, rather than try to see how powerful I can become or who I can defeat. As someone else said, it's a chance to watch a sunset somewhere far away and pristine.
What did I do today? Well I started off by taking an hour to hone my rifle skills. After that I flew to Corellia to buy a new rifle. Oh and a house. I was tired of doing without and there is this spot south of Dearic, a spot where the wind blows just right and if you're perfectly still you can hear the water in the river flow by. I love to camp there, but Im sick of making camps. So I bought a small house(I would love a Merchant tent or a stationary camp but can't have that). I flew back to Dearic and went to my spot and placed the house. And for about the next hour I sat on my porch, listening to the wind blow and clouds roll by, while watching a Kahmurra playing in the river 60m away. (dorky I know but my roommate even enjoyed the show for a little bit)
See, there are many different styles of play out there. You have your players that grind through Ranger in a week just to say they did it. You have those that mix power with enjoyment. Then you have those that take their time to savor the whole experience. I don't think it makes anyone weak, or powerful. But it will always end in the same basic question: Why am I playing a Ranger?
