Thread: Best combat profession for a ranger

I was just wondering which combat profession you guys think is the best for a ranger. Ive tried rifleman and heavy swordsman. The rifleman had the advantage of a great range and good firepower, but since I cant wear armor as a rifleman, I relied heavly on killing my oponents before they got close to me (or use traps to keep them away). The heavy swordsman is a great tank, and with decent firepower. But the problem here is that you cant take on too strong oponents, and killing creatures that has a tendency to run is a realy pain (like Peko-Peko's).

So what do you guys think, what do you use for firepower?

(sorry if this has been asked before)

Having had LLC 4 and Rifleman in the past, and now TKA, I would recommend the LLC (but takes a lot of skill points to use) for ranged. TKA has very nice melee mods, and let's face it, most creatures are melee.

I did my template with RP in mind, but it worked out nice for hunting any way

MR/MRM/CH0003 - all points spent

Originally this was pretty bad and I would not have recommended it a month ago but now it's pretty close to being as viable as others I have seen.

While on my way upt the mind-numbingly difficult riflemanI got fairly high into other profs and dropped them. When starting out rifleman you really should invest in 2-handed sword. That combo is a force multiplier you need earlier and helps with low-damage weapons to put a hurt on the head. As I went up the scout tree I worked on CH early to get a pet to guard in case things got scary and I picked a few boxes that got me a certain set of commands for all the pets. I finally got a mount, picked the one I could control on my final template and have some survivalbility (a Humbaba. I was from Corellia and all my pets come from there or Talus).

When I bought back skills all surveying and med went first then melee then the unused bits of CH. The Rifleman bit is the offense and the pet/mount is defense. Only thing I miss really is Warning Shot but it does not work well anyway on big stuff and I have not suffered greatly for the loss.

Ranger is not a profession. It's a lifestyle.

I set out at the start to do Rifleman/Ranger.

A few times on the way up Rifleman I was thinking of going for something else, as the grind through Rifleman is incredibly, incredibly painful. When you get Master though, oh jeez is it nice.

I like to think the scout traps complement the Rifleman profession, they make it easier to save yourself, kite etc. Area effect shots like strafe shot 2 are great for taking multiple creatures at once when you're doing a big harvest, conceal shot is excellent for taking out harder mobs that you're trying to loot or get a ton of hides off of.

I like Rifleman a lot, but I can't speak at all for the others...

I'm a big fan of Rifleman. At master, you can kill anything solo without too much trouble(even krayts). Even groupsare not too bad (the AoE specials do a ton of damage). Although you probably will want to get some spices/chef food to help the mind costs. With some Breath of Heaven and Rhyscake, I can use any rifleman special without any HAM cost. Nothing can last for long then.

...but since I cant wear armor as a rifleman...

Huh? What do you mean you can't wear armor?

Seriously, I've never heard anyone say this before

My bet is all of his stat points are put into his mindstats so he is limited by the encumberences to his health, strength, action, etc stats. Otherwise, you can't use the specials.

D'oh.

I thought the same thing on my way home from work tonight. I figured it was either that, or he's a wookie.

I am TKM/Master Brawler with some Ranger and that combo works wonders for me. 20 sec warcry is the bomb.
