Thread: Ranger as a type of combatant?

Now from my experience theres two ways to look at a ranger. Possiblty three.

1.) D&D tokenesque influenced. IE the woodsman
2.) Miltary type. (IE us army airborne, go anywhere shock trooper)
3.) Sniper / scout (any ranger with rifleman is this by defalt i think.)

So, type two is probably a PvP oriented / GCW roleplayish type.
Now heres the challenge:
since making a ranger combined with base marksman or brawler tree for your weapon of choice eats up a ton of SP to begin with, how would you go about making one? Obviously some dabbling will be invovled. I guess im in, "play with the skill calc" type of mood today

My ideal Ranger tree would be half-combatant and half-"crafter".

Combat in that Trapping and Wayfaring should give Rangers a definate advantage in PvE and PvP combat. I was always of the mind that if we learn to trap and conceal ourselves from animals, then as Rangers we should learn to apply those skills against humanoid (NPC and Player) opponents. Obviously not all Rangers share that opinion for some reason. I, for one, am NOT happy that after taking a more than 6 month hiadus that I come back to find that we have yet to get ANY more traps added to our "Advanced" Trapping line.

I don't feel that we should get a Ranger specific weapon certification or traps that actually inflict damage in PvP, but the Status Effects should be a viable attack to use in PvE and PvP environments.

"Crafter" would be found in our Frontiering and Tracking lines. Foraging should be able to supply us with comparable to Artisan level foodstuffs while Tracking for hire and subsequent harvesting of animals would be our monkeymaker.

Over all, I believe that Rangers should be the ultimate suppliers of Creature Harvestable goods and that we should be able to provideuniqueand meaningfull support in PvP.

Ok, my two cents -

Mastering Marksman is plain silly. It takes too long, unless you are gonna be a BH or Commando, why bother? Pick one weapon, use it. By the time you have mastered Scout, you will be at least a Novice in your weapon. (Yes, I was a Master Marksman at one point, silly me.)

Ranged support - one word - useless once you are a novice in your weapon. Steady aim, oh goody, takes time. Take a knee or go prone. I would rather save the points there to use in my weapons class later on.

Now, as Master Ranger, I have enough SP to master a weapon and still have some to be a novice medic with one box (first aid) and have one SP left.

Regardless of weapon, get medic. Makes you all the more useful in the long run.

I am not PvE or PvP oriented. I can do both, with reasonable success in PvP and great success in PvE. I can stay out in the weeds forever, or until I get BF'd and need to find a cantina. I heal me when I need to, or my camps can. I can craft really crappy stims, or find good meat and get freebies from docs.

I have almost no experience with melee - I hate getting hit - but this template of Master Scout/Master Ramger/Master (Ranged weapon of choice)/Novice Medic - works for me.

This is horrible! I return to find my new title on the forum is "Jedi". What's up with that? If they wanted to confer that I'm rare and learned, they'd make my title RANGER. and then make it camo colored.

The idea was to come up with something different and more combat go anywhere oriented, not regurgitate the same old template most of us probably use anyway

I agree, thats why i said base marksman tree with your weapon of choice.

I disagree based on the grounds that warning shot is extremly useful.

My ideal of "ranger" is Daniel Boone and David Crokett. Add technology and you have your revamp

Ranger is not a profession. It's a lifestyle.

Hmm. Tough one. I like the cross of Paramilitary style. hunting gatheing/Field support with HTFB. But the Idea of Sniper getting a bounus would be real nice. to sit outside of view and One shot one kill PVPers (UnBuffed Ofcourse). We would be the most hated Profession lol. But i can dream cant I.

As for medic i reallywould like to seethe Rager get the use of Stims On Self with out medic novice.
