(Been Master Ranger since July 2004)
Looking forward to JtL, I'd like to take up a Master Crafting prof... but with all my points in Ranger, I'd have to drop combat skills altogether, which of course will render my killing creatures ability to nearly useless. So I gotta have some combat skills.
I don't really see a reason to not to drop to 4040. I don't really use traps that much and never use the shiny complex camps. I'd loose 50m of areatrack, +10 creature harvesting and +5 terrain neg... and my Dathomir Camo kit.
Am I missing anything? Why should I stay a Master?

The only reason to stay with anything is because you want to.
If right now you want to try out the JTL stuff - then I say go for it! (tho remember it may be cool to be a space ranger, if even if you are useless combat-wise on terra firma
) You can always decide to regain Master later. Do what is most fun for you!

Well, there is very little reason to keep Ranger other than wanting to. The skills are not really worth the skill points (except possibly in the tracking tree). With the Dath camo kit, you could just make enough crates to last you until the servers are shut down.
On the other hand, you don't really need a combat profession. You can survive as just a Ranger/crafter or something similar. You won't be very effective solo but it is a multiplayer game. I sometimes get annoyed with having no combat skills but it's not as bad as you might think (my main annoyance comes from the somewhat silly force sensitve xp crud--without a combat profession it will take me several years to fill up even one box).

I keep it because it was the first thing I wanted to be and never really wanted to change. That and having a Master Ranger title up lets everyone know I'm stubborn, a bit crazy, and dedicated
I had a few times I came close to dropping it, but in the end I'll be a master ranger until they strip away the profession or, sometime in the far flung future, I no longer am playing the game(andI have no plans on going).

Thanks for the feedback. I do have some combat heavy friends, so perhaps that's not such a bad idea.
And are you saying that I can use the Dath kit, even if I can't make it? Man I need to spend more time in the FAQ I guess, if that's in there...
I should have mentioned the title as being an advantage, because running with the 'Master Ranger' title up is kinda fun, and does set us apart as not normal. Or at least set apart asnot min-maxers.
Hmm, though being a Bothan Ranger is slightly type-cast with the racial bonuses we get. Maybe I've got a little min-max in me after all.
Naw. No min-max here. Not when my alt is a Rodian Doc.

1.Minimum cost yeilding Maximum advantage: Min-Max is the power-gamer mentality where you choose race and skills based on always getting the highest bonuses and advantages over the other choices. The choice of race is never made on looks, or character background story. In pen and paper RPGs like theold 2nd Ed. AD&D, your typical min-maxer would have been an elf. Elves got tons of advantages, stat bonusesand such, withnot many numerical disadvantages to balance it out. SWG min-maxers are usually Human, with Zabraks in a close second. Humans get the advantage of skewing their stats far beyond other races, so it's easier to pile the extra points on the unhealable mental attributes. Zabraks have high mentals anyway, plus Equilibrium, a racial skill that is actaully useful.
A min-maxer would never be a Rodian Doctor. There's no advantage there. Or a wookie entertainer. Or any other wacky combination that might be considered 'gimping' yourself. Some make choices based on fun factor, or some other non-number based idea.Thisrarely happensif you're trying to get the maximum gain for minimum cost.
2. For an avatar, check out your 'My Profile' option on the top of your forum browser thingy. There should be an option to choose an avatar, then open the 'Star Wars' folder. Enjoy!
and yes i can highjack my own thread. thanks.

This brings me to another question....hijacking threads? I'm not a big forum guy so I'm not sure what this means yet. And as far as the min-max thing. I picked bothan because I had never seen them in the movies. I wondered what they looked like. This has given me no advantages that I see except for the usually daily insult of being called a dog.!

It's one thing to climb a mountain to it's peak. It is entirely another to live there. It's cold. It rains in the spring and fall. Long hard winters where food is scarse and so is the company. The wind is fierce and cutsthrough the flesh chilling the very heart of the largest wookie. The summers are short and often bring biting insects. Why would anyone live on the mountain? Let alone the top where it is the most harsh?
... because of the view.
Philosophy from the crazy wookie of the woods

You can usually tell when it happens if there is a Bothen in the punchbowl someplace, or the like...
