Thread: What's the best resource to make money?

I've been playing Rangers in every system since I was 11. A Ranger is:

1. A survivalist.
2. An outdoorsman.
3. Is NOT, I repeat, NOT concerned with money....except in SWG.

So okay, you probably looked at this post thinking I was some noob and was gonna ask what resource to sell. NO! Actually, this is a pet peeve of mine. I'd love to DB and auto-delete any player that comes to me for advice about how to "become rich" as a Ranger. And it happens to me all the time! The words "ranger" and "rich" have never ever gone together. And after reading this forum lately, it seems a lot of the real Rangers have moved on, and the Neo-Rangers, as I like to call them, have taken over. Post after post I see about pricing, about how to grind quick so one can make money, about how high you can sell.

When confronted with such questions I tell them I cannot help them, and I can't and won't. I hunt for my guild, and if I find good resources I give them away to my guild FREE. What I have left over I do sell, but the MOST you'll see me charge is 20cpu. 100-250cpu is completely and utterly ridiculous for any resource anywhere. I'm more likely to barter my goods than sell. (there's a Ranger concept: barter/trade) I play Ranger because I love being out in the middle of nowhere, watching the Tortons graze, the clouds roll by, while catching a few fish for my dinner. I love to track, I love to trap, I love to harvest. I love to sit in my HTFB and just watch what's going on around me. Money...blah. Who needs it? I have more than enough to survive on, and that's what a Ranger is about: survival.

So, show of hands. How many true Rangers are left out there? How many people play Ranger because it's fun, because they enjoy it? Or does everyone play just for the money now? If anyone is one Shadowfire and is not a Ranger and is tired of paying Ranger prices for resources, look me up. You'll never pay 100cpu for my goods, ever.

/waves hand.

Still love playing Ranger. I only go hunt for cash when I start to get low. Otherwise I sell what I get as I go.

New home of SWG Rangers!

"Ranger isnt a profession. Its a lifestyle for sure. But upon the desert plains of Tattooine that wandering hermit you see was once a proud Ranger. It may not be a profession anymore but the lifestyle can never be lost, changed or deleted. "

I also play Ranger just for fun. I love it. Being out in the middle of nowhere, watching the creatures all around me. I do accept hunting contracts if people ask me, but I dont stand in corolag yelling that im for hire or that im selling X resource for 250 cpu. If I do require money, I transfer it from my Master Architect account, (which I do play to make money, but thats another story)

LOL i hear ya! I have a Master Arkie and Master Doc. The Arkie is to make money, although he's not in play much lately. The Doc I naturally make money, but I never set out to be Doc to make money. I did Doc to heal guildies, and it just kinda stuck with me after that.

I think I've sold maybe 2 or 3 stacks of resources since I became a Ranger (and that's been a while). Do I count?

Despite this, my bank account has never really been in trouble. My expenses are just about 0 (every once in a while I need to buy a new gun or I decide to change my outfit) and a mission or two every once in a while adds up quickly.

As for becoming rich as a Ranger, it's hard not to know how to do it if you've played for a while. And it's understandable for many players to join the crowd, stocking up on cash so they can buy whatever they want. It doesn't really bother me, though--I play how I want and I let them play how they want. And, as long as they are somewhat polite and reasonable about it, I have no problem helping them play how they want.

I definitely agree with you; there seems to be a lot more posts lately about "how do I grind quick" and "I wanna be a rich ranger... help!". And I think we're on the same page with how we feel about these.

I love being a ranger and have a lot of fun playing the role. I generally hunt for a few good contacts (mostly in my guild) and don't make riches off this. I don't think I have ever hunted avian for a ridiculous 250cpu doc price because, for me, avian is really just not that fun to hunt.

I feel like I disagree with you though on your point of never selling anything for more than 20cpu and that selling it for more is ridiculous. The main reason I disagree is that I don't feel that rangers really set the price. Like you, I don't stand in cnet spamming a high price fora current hot resource nor to Itake a big stack and throw it up on the trade forums. If I get an email or tell from somebody saying "hi, I'm desperate for the current Endor wooly and I'm paying 100cpu for any size stack and I'll buy as much as you can sell" then I'm sure as heck gonna hunt this stuff to get rich! Why wouldn't I? I don't play ranger to get rich, but it is sometimes a nice side benefit. I don't haggle over prices to squeeze extra credits, I don't play buyers off each other, nor to I chase down the highest cpu on a given spawn. But, as I've said, if there is a fun spawn to hunt and it's paying well... why wouldn't I hunt it? I do derive fun out of this because I still get to play the role of ranger and make some coin for the in-game economy. This may very well be how you feel too Puck, but I didn't get this from your post.

The reason I felt compelled to post this is that I still consider myself to be a "true" ranger despite the fact that this last paragraph I just wrote does not fit your mold of whata "true" ranger is.

As a side note, I try not to look down on those who choose to play a character differently than I would. If somebody is playing ranger to make themselves rich, I don't really care since it's a game. If they're deriving fun out of playing their toon this way, so be it.

I do understand your frustration. On my server Ranger is FOTM. Somewhere between peoples back stock of credits from before the solo group nerf dwindling, and the new Master Ranger harvest mod, they are coming out of the wood work. I think its kind of funny that they picked Ranger though... Docs don't have to craft a damn thing to make huge sums of money in as little as a month or two.

Credits aren't real money. If you are making lots of them and it isn't fun of you, you're a fool. I make lots of them because it is fun for me to do it. I spend about 10% of my game time making monkey, and have more than I really know what do to with. I take that back I do use those credits for all kinds of things. Move them around to other toons and what not.

I don't hunt for money if its less than 75 cpu. Most of the time any thing that I am going to be able to hunt in a sellable amount isn't going to be super fun to hunt until I have a 30k plus stack. Yavain Avian much? And us rangers aren't the only ones hunting. I could hunt for the 10 cpu stuff too, but I would be putting at least 5 scouts out by doing it. And the less than 75 cpu stuff was very important to me as a Scout. It bought my harvesters, my houses, my BE clothes, my first T21.

People work very hard and invest vast amounts of time in producing the high quality equipment and consumables that I use every day. I don't see why they shouldn't get paid well for them. I need a good store of cash to do that. At the same time, most of those things are made with organics that I or someone of my class harvests.

Of all the profs with a sellable skill we make the least money for our time. The last doctor I sold avian to at 125 cpu bought 500k of it. That's 62.5 million credits. He didn't even flinch at spending that kind of money.

There is nothing wrong with making monkey. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be good at. It is a large portion of what this game is about, by design. And it is far from unique in that respect.

I dont really know if i like ranger or not. Honestly I picked it up to make money. But there is more to it than that. I could have picked up many things to make money. I would have made more money by making a template to solo krayts all day and sell pearls, but by being a ranger I can make money AND help guild mates. Its actually pretty neat too. I love the tracking and awesome camp. But Im not a die-hard ranger. I really only play my ranger when someone asks for resources and I know I can make money. I dont feel bad charging them asmost crafters are the richest people in the game usually, and I really need money. So in summary, I do it for the money and to helpfriends. I hope that doesnt make me a bad ranger.

I will not say I have not made money off of resources, because I have made money off of other people's generosity. But most of the time the conversation goes like this:

Buyer: I really need this resource and I'm willing to pay 100 cpu for it.
Me: I can get you the resource, but you don't have to pay me 100cpu. How about 10cpu?

At this point it's their choice whether to take me up on the offer or to pay their 100cpu price out of generosity. But I hardly ever not give them an option if they offer a price that is deemed too high by me. For me, I cannot let someone pay an inflated price when I know that, for my work, it's not worth that much. For example, to get 10k Avian Meat would take me about 2 hours. With full buffs and armor and travel, my cost would be no more than 24k. I'm making 76k profit if they take me up on my offer. Now if they want to pay 100cpu instead and give me a 976k profit, I won't turn them down.

I also use the barter system. I prefer this system personally. I'll trade you what you want for something I want. My biggest draws to this system are chefs and docs, and I love it. I'd much rather trade some resources for good chef foods, or avian for a crate set of buffpacks for my doc. Or a suit of composite for that wooly hide. I get a much better feeling about myself and my customers on the barter system. And it creates interaction.

I think maybe my reasons about money is that I'm not a hoarder. My account sits at about 10mil creds, and no matter what shopping I do, the balance rarely fluctuates too much. If I'm not spending it, why try to get more? But like you said, we all have our styles.

I was a late bloomer to the Ranger profession. Didn't come into it until September, though I'll never drop it now. I was all set for money when I took it up, so I'm not one of the "I need to get paid" Rangers.

Plus recently selling my veteran rewards that I'd never use netted me quite a bit of cash so I can continue to sit back, enjoy Ranger, and not worry about cash.

I'm trying to figure who you can't make money as a Ranger.

Besides the facts I give away stacks of hide and meat to noobs, and guildies, and friends, I do sell what I harvest. Mostly for 10cpu for herbie and 3 cpu for everything else. Even that adds up to a couple hundred grand a week, and with my new work schedule thats two days of playing and 5 days for maintenance and small missions.

Missions are insane. I get 12k to go kill two tortur lairs, then sell the meat for another 3k minimum. That one set pays house and harvestor maintenance for a week. I run two more sets and pay for the PA for this week. Elasped time, 30 mins at most. Oh wait, my harvestors - yeah, I just dumped a large lot of grind grade stuff on the bazaars and made 50k more or less. 1 cpu or less. Paid the expenses on the harvs, maybe a little profit. Considering I have dumped metal and ore on guildies lately who were grinding stuff, that evens out.

If I stopped running missions right now and if I stopped selling my harvests right now - I think I could go for a year or so without worrying about credits.

But then again, I do get decent loot sometimes. I give that away even.

If you ain't making money, something is wrong.

This is horrible! I return to find my new title on the forum is "Jedi". What's up with that? If they wanted to confer that I'm rare and learned, they'd make my title RANGER. and then make it camo colored.
