Trying to gain some much needed rifle XP last night, I went hunting on Dantooine. First of all, I hate Dantooine. On Gorath, it's by far the most overpopulated, over developed planet in the galaxy. Forget EVER dropping a camp on Dant.

Anyways, I pick up some huurton matron and quenker missions and head out. Knock the first huurton mission out, then the quenkers, then start searching for random huurton lairs and half way into one I took a look at my rifle tree to see where I was. I was working at 2121 and I looked at my sniping tree.

Yeah, I've had Sniping II for awhile now, wait, what is this, HEADSHOT III? When the hell did I get that?

So I look through all my quickbar setups (I have a different one for each hunting style) and sure enough, it's nowhere on any of them. I must have taken it off by accident when I first got it. So I put it back on and BAM, you Master Headshot a huurton matron for 2500 points. Holy crap, I'm in love withthis shot now.

Sometimes I feel like such a noob I impress myself

You can look forward to masterdom, and to spaming that headshot3 once a second... only got there recently my self and I can not imagine how huge a difference it makes...

BTW on Chimaera the region around the imperial outpost is much less populated, then the mining outpost. Try going there if you have not already been there.

Thanks, I'll try that. But with the over abundance of Imps on Gorath, who knows.

While you're here, can I ask a Ranger/Rifleman question?

I'm having a hard time getting XP for XXX4 Rifles. Everything else is moving along quite nicely, but I can't get that rifle speed up fast enough. As a matter of fact, I can barely get the xp to move it at all.

What gives xp for those boxes? I asked this question in the Rifleman forum and someone suggested to use grenades. What the heck do I want to go rifles for if I have to use 'nades to master it?

Thanks,

Plunk

I think they were saying that as a way to get the XP faster. The 4th branch of rifles needs Combat XP, not Rifles XP. When you kill something with your rifle, I think it breaks down that you get like "X" xp for Rifle XP, then 10% of that as combat XP. So 3000 xp rifles, 300 xp combat (to keep the numbers simple).

When you use grendes tho, ALL the XP is combat XP for whatever reason. So if you kill those huurtons and quenkers, instead of getting 300-400ish combat XP + 3000-4000ish rifles XP per kill, you get it ALL as combat xp. So 3000-4000ish combat XP PLUS another 300-400ish combat XP (apparently uses the same formula no matter what). The down sides here are:

1) if you want to really use the nades to do it, the only good way is to get fully buffed and in a tin can, then stand next to the lair, target the lair (so you never miss), and throw 'nades all day til everything is dead.

2) if you do wear armor, it takes a beating

3) it takes a LONG time to kill huurtons and quenkers with the basic 'nades that non-commando's can use.

4) it just doesn't seem very "Rangerish" or doesn't really fit with the "Its the journey, not the destination" / "It's not a profession, it's a way of life" mentality many of us share.

The pros are, you can run up xxx4 in rifles REALLY fast with it. All depends on if you're looking to grind it super fast, or just go with the flow. If you just go with the flow, you'll get the 4th box around the same time you finish "444x" on the other stuff, since you need so much rifle xp on the top boxes on each branch. But yah, if you don't "Grind" it, it does take a while. I actually got Master Rifleman a month AFTER I got to Master Ranger, and I didn't do Ranger all that fast to begin with! Just wandered around Dant mostly, taking on the stuff I knew I could take down - quenkers and huurtons, maybe the odd lair of pikets here and there (or whatever else I could find if there was a squad of stormtroopers to help "tank" for me, hehe).

The xxx4 line of rifleman, takes combat XP. When you kill something with you rifle and get say 3000 rifle xp, you will also get 1/10 of that in combat XP (so 300). The xp type for grenades is general combat xp, so you can get 11 as much combat xp if you kill something using only grenades.

However I got my last box of rifle speed 30 minutes before my last counter sniping box, and I have saved up enough combat xp for the first box before I began (from trying out some melee professions).
It will all come in time. Of cause some of the grinder will suggest you get super buffed, put on 90% resist kinetic composite and go spam an AoE shot on rancor lairs on Dathomir... Personally, I just hunted for fun, mostly on Endor and mostly gurrneks.

Ok, now THAT all makes sense finally. I was getting so discouraged when all my other XP was shooting up and I could barely see the XXX0 move at all. I was also hunting horned voritors last night and conceal shooting the crap out of them. Man that was fun. Watching that 11k HAM die down was cool. Think I'll head back out to Tat tonight and try my hand at a couple juvi Krayts again - NO NADES.

Well, never say never, hehehe.

And just for the record, I don't grind. I've been playing this toon since November and am still at 4344 Ranger and the 2121 Rifles. I play it to have fun and if I can drop a camp now and then to get that last tree up then I'll do it.

That being said, this speed tree for rifles may be the one grinding tree I do. Whenever I shoot I feel like I'm so friggin slow and I have almost capped on speed mods.
