Thread: Doing an Experiment in Harvesting

After collecting about a hundred or so bits of information of harvesting at the master ranger level...

I have dropped Master Ranger to Tracking IV and I am going to record more information....I am going to master a melee then a ranged profession and drop both wayfaring and trapping trees (I can regain those easily)

My goal is to find out how much I can harvest in a 2 hr period.

(Many Banthas have died to bring us this information)

I know several other Rangers on the server, including my hetero-lifemate Oppma

My goal is this...
1) Find the perfect hunter template
2) Not waste skill points in skills I neither use nor need
3) Experiment with Combat Classes to put out the maximum damage in order to increase maximum harvest (dmg, vs harvesting vs. time spent hunting)

Im not leaving ranger in any sense, I am doing some experimentation as to the overall usefulness of the rangers and compiling them into a statistical analysis.

(im a math and science geek in real life, and this kind of thing is fun to me)

stop laughing.

I am recording my data, and so far, I can master a weap profession in 3 to 4 days, I should have some results for you all later.

If you have any suggestions to this, let me know.

Don't do it Drak!!!

Just kidding. I would personally get a second toon for this, but thats becuase my Master Title is like a solid gold bar to me.

Good luck.

Don't forget about defense stacking. Try something like Master Rifleman / TKA 4/0/0/4 (or 4/4/0/4 or just master it for the mitigation 3) / Pistoleer 0/0/4/0 (or 0/0/4/4 or Fencer 4/0/0/0 or 4/4/0/0) / as much scout as you can get (at least exploration 1 and lots of hunting). You shouldn't have too much trouble getting 125 melee and ranged defense along with plenty of killing power and lots of state defenses. You might also want to consider just Master Rifleman/Master Marksman/lots of scout/full buffs and armor (including mind buffs). This should let you do /strafeshot2 with very little delay (+95 rifle speed) and the buffs/armor will keep you healthy. Maybe toss in Novice Medic just in case. And make sure to use the right weapon for the job (i.e. don't use an energy rifle on a Rancor with 60% energy resist if you have something better suited). Mastering the Novice professions can be a big help for the elite combat trees and the mix and match method also has a lot of benefits. Master Rifleman/Master Marksman with full buffs will probably give the highest damage per second (especially as armor ratings go up) but you will be spending a lot of skill points for the +5 speed, leaving a lot less for defense. Although you probably could do Master Rifleman/Master Marksman/Fencer 4/4/0/0 /TKA4/0/0/0 (or 0/0/0/4 depending if you wantmeditate or needextra defense)and still have enough for novice scout (and maybe even exploration 1). But my bet is that a mix ofprofessions will give the ultimate killing power (especially a fast shooting rifleman with lots of defense). I'm guessing you won't want more than hunting 4 at any point (and that exploration might make more of a difference in your speed than hunting does) just because of the skill point cost. I don't think Ranger will really come into this (unless you plan to consider very low yield/easy creatures in the test). But just my thoughts. Good luck with it.

I thought about getting a second toon for it, but currently I am maxed out on app xp, so re-mastering ranger is not a problem for me

so far, in terms of weap profs, I have mastered, Pistoleer, TKA, Swordsman..right now in my opinion, swordsman has more bang for the buck, I will be mastering in order (Pikeman...Rifleman...Fencer....Carbineer...Commando...(not BH...btw)

As I work on my experiment, I am doing 2 things, writing the harvesting analysis, and developing a ranger specific strategy guide for each profession as it applies to being a ranger.

Ive noticed that every week or so, people ask what is a good weap to complement ranger, and I want to be able to note the plusses and minuses in each profession to help the community and some of the newer rangers out.

Part of this comes with me being a bit bored with the fact that we rangers seem to be a little lower in priority than I wanted us to be and I wanted a challenge that would benefit not just me.

Im currently planning on killing 100 bantha per level of tracking and recording the raw numbers, then I will kill 100 bantha on veghash and record the numbers...hopefully this will be our silver bullet to encourage the harvesting hotfix...

Good point Nem0...

currently im not going to go below Ranger 0.4.0.0. As you all know, i dropped all scout a while ago and re-mastered ranger, I am never doing the camping grind again. My intention is to benefit rangers, and although I love our scout brothers, I dont want to drop too low right now, however, as time progresses, I may do that, but right now thats not what i want to do.

thanks again

I don't blame you at all--I just did it again as well. I can tell you about the harvesting amount quite accurately, though. I have yet to see any evidence that goes against this: (1.0 + Creature_Harvesting_Mod/100) * Base_Amount. If you are seeing this at every level of Ranger and when Veghashed, you might want to consider not entirely bothering. I can't guarantee that it's right (your analysis will help) but I don't want you to waste your time there. As for swordsman, make sure you get a nice powerhammer. The main reason that swordsman seem so powerful right now is that many of them have 1k damage powerhammers. And there is almost no way to keep up with that (1k damage without specials and with medium AP added on top, even prenerf T21s cap at around 700-800 when powered up although a good prenerf can win anyway).
