Thread: Tell me about rangers.

Since I've played D&D I've always played a ranger. However in D&D rangers are a combat class and here, well, they aren't. That aside.

It took me awhile to master scout because of the extremely boring grind on the trapping. Today I finally just respeced and went to master scout. I had everything but trapping in scout and it looked like I'd never get there with a1 XP a kill grind for trapping. So I took some useless stuff I mastered earlier on that character (It was my first, so I had some stuff I wasn't using.) ASnd respeced it into trapping. So it looks like I got scout mastered.

Anyhow, once I had collected enough scouting experience to train in novice creature handler, I started wondering if I should train in creature handler. Ranger seems to just be skill mods to most of the stuff I mastered in scout and none of it seems to be very combat related, other than trapping, which I wasn't big on.

So I'm asking you guys, as rangers, to perhaps "convince me" or just fill me in on the plusses of being a ranger. I mastered scout, so right now I'm.

Master scout.
Novice Rifleman: 0-2-0-0
Novice Bounty Hunter: 0-0-0-0
Novice Creature Handler: 0-0-0-0

I took up creature handling, but I'm curious as to whether or not to keep it. My "career path" looksa little messy right now though. But, what are the ups of being a ranger and would it fit into what I have now, minus the creature handler. I think what I'm doing now is more of a D&D ranger, because I've mastered scout, and much of those are "Rangerish" abilities, plus rangers usually have an animal empahty or animal companion. It may not say ranger, but I think it's more of a D&D ranger build. (I usually end to do that, if ranger isn't an available class, do my best to build a generic-like D&D ranger type class.)

So, I know you guys are rangers, but maybe it would be better to keep it like it is? Or maybe i should drop it? A little help?

Ranger in DnD and Ranger in SWG, don't share much. Then again, DnD and SWG don't share much, as RPGs go.

As it stands Ranger is Scout +, though I prefer to thing of Scout as Jr. Ranger .

I'm still rapping my head around how the CU has changed things, so I leave this to some one else.

Here is why I like my current Master Creature Handler / Master Ranger template.

Creature Handler

1) Never Lonely

2) More eye candy, gotta love it hehe

3) An additional combat character or more, with a combined level almost equal to a double combat master

4) Monkey maker for people who want mounts

5) Intimidation factor of the physical appearance some creatures have

Ranger

1) Makes wilderness hunting a lot less annoying, what with the terrain negotiation bonus and burstrun efficiency (which I don't even know what it does, btw hehe)

2) Creature Harvesting seems to be a pretty good Monkey maker when you establish connections with a wel-known crafter on your server, such as a Bio-engineer or Chef

3) Trapping, even though it is bugged on all traps but a few, is very handy against creatures with ranged attacks or very dangerous AoE melee attacks

4) Creature Knowledge, meh, it lets me know if the creature I'm about to kill has a resource needed for a camo kit or not

5) Area tracking helps with Creature Handler, in the collection of babies

6) Camo seems to be half-working on factional NPC's, from my experiences at least. Not the turrets, though. Found that out the hard way.

All in all, it's a pretty good way to combine combat and credits into one event. I have actually harvested a creature resource, milk, eggs, and ground combat xp in the same place on several occasions, when all of the mentioned resources were in demand and I found a creature that combined all of them within that area.

Basically, being an outdoorsman sharpens your senses, even though that may be through trial and error. I keep having to tell people not to attack the Scout creature, because they apparently are new to the hunting aspect of this game. Point and click will no longer be tolerated, hehe.

Given some of the prices that these things can cost, I'm inclined to agree.

4) Creature Knowledge, meh, it lets me know if the creature I'm about to kill has a resource needed for a camo kit or not Doesn't seem to be as cool as it was before CU

5) Area tracking helps with Creature Handler, in the collection of babies Area Tracking is awesome. I use it all the time. I'll be in /tells with people and ask what they're doing...they always give away the planet somehow. During our conversation, I'll track them. Never fails to impress. I've scared some Jedi I know because they thought I was a BH at first.

Low on Health or in a dangerous area? Camo up! Nothing like going prone in a bush and having NightSisters walk right by you! Sometimes, it'll help friends too (like on Krayt Hunts - if their camo holds).

Added my thoughts in green.

When you track people down, last time i check it only gives you there location if there within 300 meters from you. Is that correct? It's just as easy to use /findfriend is there on your list and you on there's. But unless they changs the radious, i don't see how it would be so easy to track someone down if there outside a 300 meter radius.
