Thread: Ranger Adjustments mho
Hello,
Instead of raising hell about the Ranger class, I decided to do two things:
1. Start de-training my Rangers skills to free up points for more "Game-Play" valid skills. (frontiering being the last I detrain).
2. Offer some suggestion on potential skill/abilitiy changes that will make the class more valid. (in my opinion).
Changes:
Wayfaring -
A. Change MaskScent so that at higher levels a Ranger can move about unafriad 100% successfulof not being detected as long as he stays "X" distance from any hostile mob. As the skill advances "X" goes down. Increase the re-use timer on Maskscent so that it will be used more as a Traveling tool. Perhaps even allowing these benefits to be Group Oriented.
Frontiering -
A. One potential change to "Camps" is to allow a Ranger to Stablize persons in thier camp perhaps through the use of rudimentary medical skills, such as Herb Lore or something of the nature tied in with Foraging. Never to the effectiveness of Doctors or Medics but something Valid and useful, requiring the Foraging of Herbs and the use of Camps. Higher skills levels yield better results - Cure poison/disease, Heal, wound treatment. The ability to fine tune forage searches, so that if you are seeking Food, you will not come up with an unedible fishing bait.
B. Tracking - a potential skill for this branch to make it worth wild to grind out.
Hunting -
A. Better animal delve information - current HAM status, Meat/Hide/Bone quality/quanity. BAF? Attacks?
B. Make Animal +Hit bonuses more effective. Perhaps the chance for Critical Hits against Animals.
Trapping -
A. HAM specific traps - allow us to prodce traps that will effect specific HAM bars. Offer a wider range of traps to chose from at the Ranger level, even if that means removing some of the scouts traps.
I personally would prefer to see the Rangers "Trapping" branch removed and replaced with something that would hone our Offensive and Defensive abilities.
Oh well, thats my 2 cents anyway. Feel free to add/bash as you will.

Sounds to me like your impression of a ranger is as a Druid/Fighter... which isn't bad....
I've found that the only use I can see for myself as a Master Ranger would be if I had some sort of fighting skill coupled with healing...
The problem is... if you take skills like Squad Leader or Creature Handler or even Pistoleer, you start to be defined by those classes and your Ranger status is more of a secondary skill (even if you are a master!)
If you want people to look at you and go... "AH... There's a Ranger"... instead of "Look another creature handler"...
Then I suggest you STICK with Master Ranger and pick up skills that will help define your true role as a Traveler, Tracker, Defender.
To me this means:
Master Ranger + Medic + Anything that gives you Defensive Bonus (and maybe SL if you are the grouping type)
This way you can be the "Master Control" of a group... healing when necessary, tanking w/ rescue, and if fighting creatures - using traps for mob control.
Thats where I'm headed.... I don't see the need to detrain yet... I just hope they start giving Rangers a role.

It's always unfortunate to hear someone is giving up before things really get started. Before you start clicking that 'surrender skill' button, I'd humbly suggest you wait until later today when the official response to the correspondent issues comes down.
A couple of things I have thought about last week working on ranger.
MaskScent, I havent played on TC so I dont know how good/bad it is after the patch but I guess I will find out tomorrow.
One thing is sure though, if Yellow mobs brakes it, we should get XP when it doesnt brake, especially since yellow seem to be much better at discovering you then reds.
Also at ranger lvl's (skill over 50?) the timer before you can reuse it should go down. Not that esential if thoose yellows stop braking it.
NPC's should discover you but not brake it.
Burstrun, I would like to see a faster "reuse" for rangers aswell, this or simply giving the ranger faster movement speed in "non city" areas.
I would prefer a shorter timer thenbeing able to run for a longer time.
Also please give me a burst swim
.
I havent got to the High Tech Field base but its aperantly bugged/broken...
Ranger foraging is bugged/broken, I think it has to do with this rare item thing, Becouse from time to time I get the "not enough inv. space" message. No mather how much space I got... Whatever is it I find? a Space ship?
Also I only have "Frontiering 2" but it seems that you VERY rarely get multiple items. Isnt this a ability yuo get at scout lvl? I dont think I have gotten more then 1 items since I got ranger...
As of now the only real improvements a ranger gets over a scout is
2 camps (1 bugged),
2 traps (works now?),
1 ability; Rescue (quite useless if you dont have any other combat skills...)
Crawl speed from better "terrain negotiation" (I like that though, if they only fix the "Move->Go Prone" bugg..)
I have no problem with the ranger being a adv. scout, on the contrary thats why I choosed it. But in my opinion the proff. as of now dont have enough to offer to be considered a elite proffesion.
It needs more abilities (conceal?, track?), more traps (area snare?, "scare" trap?) and more camps (perhaps 2 new "solo" camps, giving good heal and repell but using less resources, at Frontiering 1 and 3).
