You hit /areatrack, pick "animal" or person, and an emote starts. Then a list pops up. It gives you the direction to head in to find what you're looking for. Somewhat useful, in the right area.

When do you get the direction? I am just a novice ranger and I don't get direction...only a list.

You cannot track direction until you move up the ladder. It would be helpful to hover your mouse over the new skills as you click up the levels. It tells you what the new skill gives you.
Novice - Track animals only
Tracking 1 - Direction sense (this gives you direction of the animal)
Tracking 2 - Track NPC's +direction
Tracking 3 - Distance +direction
Tracking 4 - Track players +distance +direction
