In addition to their normal uses within cities to house vendors for merchants outside of the merchant's residence / workshop, you can declare residence in a merchant tent. My wife's architect generously dropped a tent for me in a nice secluded forest glen within the bounds of Fairfolk city on Dantooine on Tempest.

They take up one lot for the merchant (you can't drop them unless you have Merchant Efficiency IV), have a 3x3 grid footprint, and hold up to 75 items. Maintenance cost per day is 288 credits.
To compare this to other residences, feel free to stop by Eilla's Estates at http://rothwellhome.org/swg/

Err... I mispoke slightly... you can appear to set up residence, but you can't actually declare it as your official residence. The trade I set up with my wife was I dropped a house for her and declared my residence in the house but live in the tent. She dropped the tent (thus saving her lot spaces for harvesters) and declared residence in the tent, but lives in the house. We are, of course, both admins of both structures.

I haven't, because official line from Sony (yeah, I know its been wrong before) seems to indicate that you need to have merchant efficiency IV to keep a merchant tent.

Have you tried /transferstructure to let you take control of the tent?
