Thread: Nifty /maskscent bug. Is this new?
The Executive Summary:
Mask Scent does not work for me with any degree of consistency. When it is active and the Nose icon is showing, critters can clearly see me and react to my presence as though I were not masking my scent.
Moreover, I cannot disable mask scent once it is active (which you can normally do by issuing another /maskscent command). If I mask my scent and then try to disable it before it wears off, I get the following error message:
You cannot mask your scent while you are concealed.
The Lengthy Exposition, In Which I Discuss The Problem In Excrutiating Detail:
This started happening to me last week, shortly after I used a Camo Kit for the first time (Coincidence?!?). It has hit me off and on, but is particularly plaguing me today.
For those of you who may be tripping over your fingers in your haste to tell me "Ah, well you're just using /conceal instead of /maskscent, and you can't /maskscent while you're /concealed," I am not using /conceal.
I have /maskscent hotkeyed. It's SHIFT-F8. It does nothing but mask my scent. I have had this hotkey active since I trained Exploring II back in September.
I do not have /conceal hotkeyed. If I want to conceal myself with camo, I have to type out "/conceal". Moreover, I only have kits made up for Yavin and Corellia.
/conceal works normally. I was on Yavin this morning and concealed myself with a camo kit, and got all sorts of scout XP spam. It clearly works.
At some later point this morning, I wound up on Naboo and had to do a brief cross-country run. So I hit SHIFT-F8 to mask my scent. And it didn't work. Creatures still reacted to me as though I didn't have /maskscent operating. The Nose icon remained visible in the status bar, but it clearly wasn't doing me much good. Eventually I drew aggro.
After I finished off that fight, I tried to manually drop /maskscent and re-apply it. Which is when I got the "You cannot mask your scent while concealed."
So I tried logging out to desktop and coming back. No luck.
Then I tried deleting my camo kits and logging out to desktop. No luck.
Then I tried waiting for the Nose icon to go away on its own, and then logged out and came back. Still no luck.
It's going to severely curtain my hunting if I can't get Nose Mode to work properly.
Anybody else run into this?
Solution: use /conceal (even if you dont have the kit) to remove it.
i was running around on dath and had this happen to me, i assumed that some one else in the group had conceald me (they haddnt) and that it was some how bugged, so when /maskscent faild to remove it i just used conceal, it went away, and i was able to maskscent normaly.
When I relogged and cloned, I noticed that I had both Yavin and Corellia kits in my inventory, so I put them in my pack and then tried masking and it worked fine. So, it was either logging, dying, or taking the kits for the wrong planet out of my immediate inventory that did the trick.
The only way to get rid of it is to have it break, or as said above, to use /conceal again.
Just some feedback...maskscent and camo are definitely 2 different things. If I put on camo, I get much better results but it still breaks sometimes. If I really don't want to be jumped, here is how I handle it.
I normally don't mess with conceal because of the time it takes to make the kits. I save them for my doctor buddy who had to give up scouting or others without mask scent.
I stay >40m away from the really nasty creatures because even if mask breaks, they will not automatically agro.
If it breaks and I am really nervous, I stop and go prone. Being prone reduces the odds of being detected. I wait out the 15s, remask and move on.
If mask keeps breaking in the same area, I start walking which reduces the odds of mask breaking over running till I get further away from the creatures.
I have made it all over Dath using this technique. Takes some time sometimes but I get there safe and sound.
