Lies. Pistolier/Ranger isn't a bad mix. I've done that, and BH, and half BH/half pistolier. There really is no bad combat prof to go with Ranger-- if pistolier fits your playstyle, go nuts. Between phec darts and stopping shot (and firearm strike if some beastie gets too close), plus body shot for damage, you'll be able to handle yourself pretty well against most things. An ancient krayt may regen too fast for you to solo, but then again, maybe it won't if you have a great pistol. Anything less than an ancient will come tumbling down if you fight smart.

And who says you can't just wield a lvl 54 laser rifle in any case if some ancient comes barking up your neck of the woods? heh, saves a lota time.
