Hi, all.
For some reason, without a doubt, the Ranger profession has caught my attention ever since I got this game on the 2nd of November. It seems, well ... damn cool to put it short (:
However I'm having a bit of trouble deciding what to be, because it cost a lot of skill points to become both Master Scout and Master Ranger. It's somewhat making it hard for me to decide what kind of overall character I want to become (however I do know that I'm going to master the Ranger profession, most definitely). I was wondering if you all could probably help me decide how to balance out my character for my interests and perhaps needs.
When I think of the term Ranger, it reminds me of the Army's elite Rangers. I guess it's because of my interests in the military, but those rangers are highly skilled survivalists as well, and this is what turned me towards the ranger profession in SWG. With that in mind, it seems that naturally I'd be leaning more towards a "combat" Ranger for my character, but since I'm new, I don't really know what would be best to pick when it comes to a combat perspective. Right now I have Novice Pistoleer (0001) and Marksman (4401). Now, I'm looking at a SWG character builder and so far this is what I have in mind (I'm going from top to bottom shown here: http://swgcb.yogn.net/swg-cb.php):
Marksman: 4401
___Novice Rifleman: 1000 (for the various rifle weapons and mindshot2)
___Novice Pistoleer: 0001 (just for that damn nice Republican rifle and the ability to knock down an enemy)
Medic: 2323 (incase no medics are around I can at least heal myself to some degree & use stimpack Bs)
Scout: 4444 (hmm I wonder what all of these scout skills are being used up for ...
)
___Ranger: 4444
I came to this conclusion just now, actually, after rereading what I wrote and looking at the character builder more closely. I'd most definitely like your opinions on this for me being somewhat of a "combat" Ranger. If you have any advice or even some criticism I'm all ears.
Thanks in advance!

I hate to bump this up, but since for some reason I can't find an edit button, I forgot to mention that I'm almost to Master Scout incase someone was going to reply that I need to master the Scout profession before moving on to Ranger.

well there's a good thread that's stickied in this forum which looks at different templates to go along with ranger. I would definitely suggest reading through that.
My 2 cents are that you should try not to spread yourself too thin (i.e. dabbling in a few combat professions). Given the limited skill points available to us master rangers, you get the most bang for your buck by mastering 1 combat profession. It seems like rifleman is the most popular to complement ranger but I've been very happy being a master swordsman.
I've put the rest of my skill points into medic 1/0/0/0 which has helped me out a bit, but I'm not overly committed to it.
Well that's my opinion for you. Again, read through the ranger template thread. Have fun and good luck.

The only tricky thing you need to remember is that right now you really don't get the speed bonuses or true functionality of a weapon without mastering it.
Yes with 1/0/0/0 Rifleman you'll be able to MS2. But you'll be extremely slow, on many T21s you're looking at an 8- 10 second delay followed by an additional 5seconds if you decide to switch to your pistol. In theory its a great template, but you'd be relying heavily on slow Rifle skills. Try it out though. Maybe you can find a nice medium with the knockdown you mention.
Like I said, it looks like a nice set of skills though.

If you're just going to dabble in Rifles, which I highly recommend you don't, I'd suggest 0/1/0/0. Conceal Shot is very handy, more so than the DoT of mindshot. As stated earlier I think your template is spread very thin, jack of all trades master of none. Mastery of one combat elite is preferable and much more efficient than dabbling in a few with any Ranger Template.

Thanks, guys. That Ranger template thread really helped a lot -- tremendously!
I was thinking of going TKM and Ranger, but then I got to thinking and the Ranger can take complete advantage of the Master Rifleman skill from reading what you guys have stated. I think this will be great then and was what I was looking for. Now it's time to go back in the game and see what I can do with finishing up these survival skills (:

Said it before, will say it again.
Dabbling sucks. Marksman is a waste of points. Pick a weapon and get Master in it. Any weapon. For that matter, go Melee, just master. The aggregate benefits far far far outweigh the limited skill set you have here. Master Rifle, or Pistol, and make ranged support, which is pretty useless except for one special, go away and free some points up.
No medic. Like bleeding? Play with a medic all the time? Like sitting in camp? LIke paying for buffs, running around in a tin can?
To be pretty well self sufficient -
Master a weapon
Have novice medic
Use traps, terrain and specials to your advantage
Works for me - just my opinion

Master Swordsman/ Ranger 0040/ Merchant 0004
There's not much I haven't killed in this game. I never found Gorax.
Finding and tanking Krayts can be lucrative if you're not up against a bunch of Jedi.

As others have stated, master ranger is probably best complimented by a single combat mastery and novice medic. Many choose rifleman, some choose swordsman, and a good number of rangers go TKM. I like TKM because the unarmed toughness is great, meditate is priceless, and you can pretty much inflict every possible state on your victims. (Even though dizzy doesn't effect creatures, a good knockdown or two will really amp up the damage you do to them. This is especially useful against those critters with high kinetic resistance.) The downside is that we're limited to kinetic damage, which can be a problem at times. Whichever path you coose, have fun.

I personally enjoy my TKM/Ranger template but do wish we could control the Bleed DOT, especially while holding a VK. Lord knows I have enough holes in my forehead from all the saluting.
The Bleed DOT as a TKM is random at best and (unless I missed it) there is no controlling when it hits your target. Also consider taking up some Fencer for defences. The + to dizzy/KD/Intimidate are worth while (atleast until the combat rebalance). After the CB hits live, there will be many creative ideas floating around for new templates, so bear in mind any template experimenting is probably only going to be good until the CB.

I'm doing TKM/Ranger combo and like it so far-- my guildies are all ranged so it works perfectly. And 90% of my guildies are CH..so its me and about 6 Pets going toe to toe with Rancors.

Putting in my $.02 also, i love my TKM/M. Ranger temp. Large animals come down quickly and I'm close enough to harvest quickly at the same time. I keep the M. Ranger tag up and hide the TKM....I just madeM. Rangera week or so ago and am having a blast w/ it. Helping a few jedi level also by being a ble to track. Love that assesst.
