I was ranger/rifleman pre CU, and like many i decided to have a play with my template with the respec.
Last day of repec, unhappy with all the playing, i went back to the one profession i have thoroughly enjoyed, ranger. made the mad mistake of picking up carbines with it on the last day (only combat prof i havn't tried as of yet)
Although carbines has better defences than rifleman, there is one major issue for rangers, the defences aren't that good when you hit one of the various area attacks at your disposal.... several incaps later im re-grinding rifles (for the 3rd or fourth time) and can't wait to finish up where i started.
To all those that stuck with ranger through the CU i salute you, you are much wiser than I. As for those that experimentated, i understand the curiosity...
Oh and before i forget, while finishing ranger (messed up respec and wasn't quite master again) and working on rifles i obviously need to hunt in groups, and i found it great as a ranger. I could track for appropriate targets, provide camps for healing with a chat amongst the group, i'm actually using my traps now, and i just loved getting the big **** vehicle out (forget name) and transporting the entire group in safety.. (not a ranger skill i know but it added to the enjoyment and emmersion of the whole thing.
very nearly master ranger available for hire once again.

I'm a master Ranger and Swordsman right now, and I find that when fighting creatures I take as much damage as I dish out. It takes pretty much my whole health bar to kill a CL 80-82 creature, and about half of it to kill a CL78-79 creature. This leads to a lot of down time and stim D usage to keep my health up and the harvesting going.Do you "ranged" Rangers find that you take less damage on any given creature? How's your downtime and how quickly does your armor wear out? I'm taking a beating right now and wondering if maybe a combination of traps and ranged attacks may result in less downtime, stim usage, and armor decay.

A good friend of mine (a long time BH) picked up a hunting contract for some extra cash, i went along to give him a hand, not hunting anything special, but with me tracking, and his combat we knocked a couple of mill worth of resources in an hour or so, and it was much more fun than it was when i used to go out alone.
Know some combat types in need of cash? they can handle most things with a little backup, take em out hunting, the rate you'll be killing mobs will more than compensate for the fair 50/50 split of profits. not to mention as i said, much more fun

Went hunting last night with a group, I just hung out at 50m threw in a glow wire and shot away, I found the glow wires to be very useful in speeding up the taking down of mobs, didn't have to use the pdarts as the melee guys were holding the agro quite nicely

Since the CU, Ranged definitely seems to be favoured over melee. I'm a carbineer and do pretty well. I actually get annoyed if my health bar goes below half becuase I know I can do better.
