A friend of mine just got Novice Ranger and we're trying to use it to compliment my CH abilities. The whole Area Track thing is seeming rather confusing. When it is used all we get is a list of things that are I guess from looking at other posts within 500m any direction. We want to go looking for certain creatures but don't quite know how to best utilize the skills. I mean, if the area track picks up the creature we're looking for, it could be in ANY direction. If someone experienced could just post some tricks of the trade on how to successfully utilize the area track I'd really appreciate it. Right now it doesn't seem like we'd find something just as easily wondering around without Ranger skills.

You need to invest more into the tracking skill path to get direction and distance =)

Just curious, what do most people use tracking 4 for? I have it, but I can't imagine what I would use it for unless I was helping another player find someone.

you could use it to help a bh track his jedi mark for a large fee...

Areatrack is probably the best skill we have.

Recon - who or what are those red dots way out there? Where are the opposing faction players grouping? How many bad guys are there total? /ar can tell you without you having to move

CHs love it - we can find baby animals in no time.

BHs love it - we find marks for them, beats using a droid

Artisans love it - looking for a rareresource only dropped by certain animals, or just looking for a certain animal for a resource

So yeah, I can think of a couple of uses for areatrack.

Granted there are bugs, but hey, work around em.

To expand on that, at Novice Ranger, yeah, I know, /areatrack is pretty crappy. You get a list of stuff that's nearby. To succesfully utilize /areatrack, you need to advance up the tracking tree. For your purposes, even getting tracking 1 will make it a million times easier for you to find those creatures, because you get a direction. Tracking 2 lets you track NPCs, which isn't what you need, from what you've said, but nevertheless useful. At tracking 3 you get a distance to the creatures and NPCs. Finally, at tracking 4, you get the ubertrack: the ability to track other players. I reccomend getting to tracking 4 before even getting to wayfaring 1, as it is much more useful. Camo is fun, but tracking is better.

I use the player track for a couple reasons. Mostly i just want to see if anyone i know is in the area. I use it to determine how many and where an opposing group of people are. I've actually tracked one person once for a person. I got left behind in a camp on dathomir due to nature calling me, i didn't have to bother sending a tell to ask which direction they went or a waypoint, just track an follow. I've noticed though that area track will not tell me who is in a building. I've been right outside a crowded cantina but can't get any names from inside the cantina. Starports are different though don't ask me why.

Yea, you are pretty much out of luck until you get direction. With basic area track, what I did was start spiraling out from where I was with radar out to 128m. I would target anything that poped up on it to see if it was what I was looking for.

Our server has a Bounty Hunters Guild, where players can register to be either hunters or marks. Yesterday, I helped one of the BHs track a mark on Corellia. What made it especially funny was that when the BH contacted me, I was in the Theed cantinaworking onMusician xp. Next thing I know, I'm running around Coronet's south side, still in my exquisite gown and birdcage lekku thingy, using areatrack...

I PvP a lot, and we use areatrack (player)as an early warning system for Imperial assaults. We have rangers fan out in all directions, moving 100M at a time and tracking players. As soon as we hit known Imps we send out a strike team.

Also useful in a city. I use it a lot like this

/who imperial (or rebel)

Spits out a list of named declared imperial players and basic location (city, or region in map). If I'm overt in Coronet and I see that there are overt imps in coronet, I then areatrack for their exact location, then attack (also TKM).
