Ok, solo you get X amount of resource. You do all the work, you get 100% of whatever it is.

Grouped, be it with a pet or a Master Ranger or a noob artisan who can't harvest, you get 60% of what you would normally get for a harvest. Group wisely and you can kill bigger critters faster, hence larger harvests, tho again, at the 60% level.

I group for when I want to get a decent amount of harvesting done, but don't want to be the sole shooter out there. (Master Rangers all know this, and here is the Ranger secret - Critters target Rangers first, regardless of what else is out there.)

I go solo when I want to nail some quick missions for quick creds, or when I know I can solo and get a decent harvest.

Depending on your combat skills, pick from whichever scenario suits you.

Uh..ya...what JB said. Also to consider, if you are hunting with friends, you might have them harv for you as well. This is a great tactic I use to get those large orders filled. ya, you loose 30%, but you get their share as well. =

For those of you that are more experienced in this area, as I'm relatively knew to the Ranger thing (no not grinding it, thought it would be fun), is it statistically more sound (ie profitable in terms of quantity) to hunt and harvest in groups or to try to do all your collecting solo? If you're of the opinion that groups would be best, what do you think the optimal mix of ranger/scout, non-ranger/scout, and pets would be? Thanks for all your advice!
