I am making a small guide to grinding this profession so that you can get through Ranger as quickly as possible without needing to disturb the normal community. In exchange, I ask that you do not use this forum to post camp grinding macros and similar things. They can just as easily be putin the Scout, Jedi, or BH forum and are more useful for people interested in those professions (a big part of being a proper Ranger is not grinding the skill trees but trying to learn about the profession as you get better in it). With the following information, you can easily get through Ranger in one day.

To those who have ground through Scout, the method is exactly the same. Just choose bigger targets for the traps and harvests to raise the xp gain to a higher level.

There are three types of experience you will need. The following methods should enable you to get this xp quickly:

Trapping xp:

For trapping xp, just throw traps at creatures. The higher level the creature is, the more likely you are to miss but you will get more xp when you hit. Experience is only gained if the trap actually affects the creature. You can not use another trap of the same type unless the first has worn off (i.e. if you blind a creature with a Sharp Bone Spur, you cannot get xp for throwing another Sharp Bone Spur until the first blind state wears off). Glow Juice, Glow Wire, and Wire Mesh traps can currently be thrown continuously for experience (i.e. you don't need any delay between throwing them to get xp). They are probably your best choice. If you want to really grind this tree, do the following: Get buffs and high kinetic resist armor. Go to an adventure planet. Single pull a creature that you can hit with a decent success rate (like Giant Baz Nitches at Novice or Rancors at Advanced Trapping 2 or so) and just keep throwing traps. You should be able to cap your xp in no time and shouldn't have too much trouble surviving. You can also try to find 2 creatures fighting each other (rancors or a group of pickets near a voritor etc) and just use the creatures to tank for you. You can easily get a full trapping box off of one creature in a short period of time. You can also follow a group around hunting while throwing traps. This gives you the advantage of being able to harvest the kills as well.

Scouting xp:

The trick here is to just kill every creature you see. Finding a big hunting group or a levelling Jedi can really help here. Let them kill the stuff while you harvest it (you really should try and help them kill it as well, though). The bigger the creature you kill is, the more xp you will get. Rancors are a good target here as the xp gained for the time spent is much better than something like a krayt ancient. You should probably harvest hide and bone (in about 2:1 quantities) to use for the wilderness survival xp. Some people prefer the maskscent on a speeder approach as you have to do less. The main downside to this approach is that you don't get the resources from it. Just use /maskscent, hop on a speeder, and ride around on Dathomir. If /maskscent breaks, find a safe spot to dismount and reapply it. You will get plenty of experience just driving around this way. For training, go up one tree at a time to maximize your caps. If you get all of one tree first, your caps should be high enough to let you get most of the other tree in one trip. This doesn't matter if you have a friend to train you but Master Rangers are rarer than Jedi.

Wilderness Survival xp:

There are two fast ways to do this: crafting and AFK macroing. Fishing can also help. The crafting is significantly faster but requires a lot of resources. If you hunt through the scouting xp, you should have plenty of hide and bone, though. Just pick up a bit of metal and use a normal crafting macro (try the artisan forums for information on that). Craft the largest camp you can will give the best xp. Make sure to have multiple crafting tools. For AFK macroing, I will list the idea here but I'm not going to give you a specific macro. If you want a specific macro, do a search on the Scout boards. Please do not ask for one here but just do a search (there are plenty around of varying types). The basic idea is to make a toolbar full of camps and to continuously try to set up a new camp. Camps will disband automatically after a set period of time. You can also disband a camp by engaging in combat. Combat can be as simple as "attacking" a creature or lair 60m away while unarmed or you can try to duel a friend who is sitting in your camp (you don't have to hit anything. You just need the combat music going for 30 seconds to a minute). You can also disband a camp by moving outside of it for a period of time (can be accomplished by following pets/group members/swoop bikes/etc that are not in the camp and waiting for a bit). Larger camps give more experience in less time. In general, you cannot use a camp that you cannot craft. To ensure that you don't get booted from the server, you will need another macro to convince the server that you are doing something. Just sitting and standing or reapplying maskscent is enough to do this.

Apprentice xp:

It is easiest to just find someone with a lot of combat xp and the ability to learn Ranged Support 1. Many people are willing to "sell" you app xp by repeatedly training ranged support one.

I hope this helps you get to where you want to be.

I guess there isnt a polite "ranger-like" way to tell folks that grinding is the antithesis of our profession... sad times indeed.

A better way to get trapping exp. if you know your combat profession good enough to pull it off.

Bleed a creature down to 1 heath, action or mind point. Switch to hand to hand or something you're good at *missing* creatures with. The creature will then run away slowly due to how low it's ham is. You can throw traps at that creature as long as you want. A tip someone gave me on how to get this exp. pretty quick. I got like 15k trapping exp without getting hit on one creature.

For the trapping, go with a rancor hunting group. Stand back about 35m and throw traps over and over again. You'll have the trapping line done in 30minutes.

Glow Juice, Glow Wire, and Wire Mesh traps are the best for grinding. They can be thrown without any delay. Every other trap needs downtime before you can get xp again (the state effect needs to wear off). So, if you are grinding, just make stacks of those three traps and keep throwing them until you cap your xp (glow juice have the lowest resource requirements if I remember correctly so they are probably your best choice). You don't need to wait at all.

As for what to trap, trap the largest thing you can hit. If you hit rancors 50% of the time then you are better doing that than trapping sharnaffs 90% of the time. But if you have more like a 10% success rate on rancors and a 40% success rate on sharnaffs then the sharnaffs are better (especially considering they do less damage). To figure out what is best for you, do the following:

xp_rate = xp_for_hitting * number_of_hits / number_of misses

As you get more and more data, the xp_rate should converge to xp_for_hitting * percent_chance_of_hitting. The higher your xp_rate, the faster trapping will go. Just make sure that you can keep throwing the traps at whatever you are hunting without dying (i.e. you probably want buffs and armor or a tank/creature helping you). Good luck with it.

wish there were numbers on amounts of resources need for camps... im kinda lazy myself to figure it out. It would take me sometime since i dont yet have the ability to make the larger camps and see what amount is needed. Could someone post these numbers if they dont mind spending the time to do the math that already have the ability to make them.. thanx

Head to swgcraft.com and just look at the Skilltree for Ranger there. That should give you the schematic numbers for each type of camp a Ranger can make.

Well, I decided since the ranger community has taken the time to help those of us with our grind I would return the favor and add to their grind guide. I have taken the time to figure out the required amount of hide, bone, and metal you will need to craft your way through the survival line. I got all of my figuresfrom www.swgcraft.com to figure out the required number of resources needed and the amount of experience each kit will yield in practice mode**. You may also want to pay a little visit to your local chef and pick up some Ormacheck?

Why Ormacheck when it doesn't give an experience bonus to crafting? Well it is true that Ormacheck does not give a 5% experience incrase to crafting. However, it does give a 5% experience increase to other types of experiece and you will be earning survial experience sitting in your camp crafting your tents. So in short, you will be earning a 5% survival experience incrase just for sitting in your cozy camp.

From Novice to Frontiering I:

As stated above when you train in Novice Ranger will be given the draft schematic for the High Quality Camp Kit. In order to qualify for training in Frontiering I you will need to craft 191 High Quality Camp kits. This will require a total of 5,730 units of hide, 2,865 units of bone, and 955 units of metal.

From Frontiering I to II:

At this level of frontiering continue to craft theHigh Quality Camp Kits. You will need to craft a total of286 high quality camp kits to qualify for Frontiering II. You will needa total of 8,580 hides, 4,290 bones, and 1,430 units of metal.

Frontiering II to Frontiering III:

At this level of frontiering you recieve the draft schematic for the Field Base Kit which will yield you 178 survival experience per kit while crafting in practice mode. You will need to craft a total of 225 Field Base Kits to qualify for training in frontiering III. You will need a total of 9,000 units of hide, 5,625 units of bone, and 4,500 units of metal.

Frontiering III to Frontiering IV:

At this level of frontiering continue craftingthe Field Base Kit in practice mode. You will need to craft a total of338 Field Base Kits to qualify for training in frontiering IV. You will need a total of 13,520 units of hide, 8,450 units of bone, and 6,760 units of metal.

Total resources needed to craft through the Frontiering line of Ranger is as follows:

36,830 units of hide

21,230 units of bone

13,645 units of metal

**Please note all these figures do not include critical failures and you will have to adjust the amount of resources needed accordinly.
