I'm seeing a lot of unfamiliar names in here recently, which I think is good. Having more rangers has got to be a good thing. Something is starting to disturb me though. I've noticed the trend of rangers that don't want to track or sometimes don't want to hunt for resources. Those seem to be our main usefullness to other players. Being an explorer is all well and good(and fun in my opinion) for RP and just relaxing for a good time. During my last weeks of playing time, all I did was explore.
When I first joined the forums, it seemed rangers in general were unhappy about not having useful abilities. Now with jedi trials and crafters needing organics it appears we're in demand. Am I just getting old and grumpy or are rangers now bent out of shape because people want our services all the time? I'm not knocking anyone for not wanting to take contracts but it is starting to seem like we're mad because we've got what we wanted and don't like it.
Just an observation and I surely don't claim to speak for the community(I think some old fish has that job :smileywink
, but I'd really like to hear your thoughts on this.

I have been Ranger for quite a while (with a short break), I never tracked for anyone except guildies.
/areatrack is a nice skill if used for the right things (finding the next spawn of mobs that drops the ressource I am after, I don't use missionterminals for hunting), however it's only partially helpful to track down the things those asking for trackingservices want to get tracked.
I probably *would* track for strangers *if* the price is right (i.e. equals the amount of credits I can get for hunting decent ressources in the same time without any success guarantee), this just never happened until now for obvious reasons

Just because something we can do (not much better than scouts i might add) is now in demand alot, DOES NOT mean we have now got usefull ablities. The skills are exactly the same as before but it just so happens we get a little bonus over our startingprofession and people are willing to pay more.
Just because we get more money for our services does not mean its more fun, yes it means we are apreciated and wanted more but it still doesnt make us hunt better, make us become better ranger and have nice new skills that aid us in this regard.
If making money is your primary concern then master scout + 2 combat professions will do you nicely. Ranger has not changed one bit since the half assed implementation of /areatrack and /conceal, we get paid more but so does every other harvest collector. Give me skills that allow me to hunt better than everyone else, give me skills that allow me to get more organics in a much quicker time than anyone else. Now that would be usefullness.
I dont want to get more cpu for my small amount of resources, id much rather get the same money from gathering a much high amount of resources, from supplying more of my customers, and allowing me to enter different markets (i.e. grind quality market etc) without pulling out of other market segments.
Dont get me wrong extra cash is nice but that alone has not increased to fun levels of rangers, nothing at all has changed and i see why some newrangers can get frustrated with things. People who have played the profession for a long time simply wait, suggest ideas, put their opinion across, they have the benefit of experience. New people simply spend all this time getting master ranger only to find theres nothing there and once they start looking at themselves up against master scouts, things realy seem bleak.
I say let people moan, let people push ideas out and suggest new things because if we dont nothing is gonna change and we will still be scout plus.

Tracking is a fickle product to try and sell. Not a whole lot left except the harvest that is a marketable skill, so I stick to that. Let me know when something changes

Which direction is Ranger heading?
The answer is no direction. Who can tell me the last time the ranger prof was directly altered? When was one of our bugs last fixed? When was one of our questions or issues lastaddressed by a developer? Why is our class one of the rarest seen?
We have been a broken profession with many broken abilities since the release and yet they keep adding new stuff to the game. I don't know what kind of programming teamSOE have but I'm a programmer myself and one of our first rules here is to fix things that are broken before adding new code. The whole thing smacks of the Sony corporate money making engine, as do other SOE games like planetside.
Each time I play for a month, cancel my acount for about 3 months, come back in hopeand nothing has changed. I have been playing SWG on and off since release and I won't give up ranger because it's the profession I always wanted to play in this game... I am just watching, waiting until they finish developing thecode we paid for when we bought the game(ranger is by no means the only profession still broken).
I suspect everyone will have moved on to other games long before that happens.
