Thread: Farming. New skill for Ranger?

Just a thought but what do y'all think of having a new element introduced to the game in the way of Farming achievable by the Ranger Profession. I'm not a Ranger myself but have been and it lacked a certain something and didn't really grab me.

Farming would allow chars to herd animals and essential harvest them in bulk. Novices would be able to herd smaller tamable creatures and keep them in pens (which would take up lot space) progressing onto more expert herding skills allowing chars to keep more agressive creatures. Other professions could get in on the act as well.

  • Architects could perhaps craft pens to sell. Different creatures requiring different size pens. Eventually a master Ranger could perhaps herd Rancors. These creatures would obviously require a larger pen taking up more lot space but architects would have to craft more sturdier pens.... maybe requiring some from of electrical fencing???

  • Weaponsmiths may be able to craft a herding weapon to keep check on some of the herdedcreatures... more advanced weaponry for larger creatures??

  • Droid Engineers could craft droids for automated milking, calf rearing or the like?

  • Chefs could make specific foods for the herds??.. or even equipment for feeding

  • Smugglers could steal off of unsecured pens???

  • Tailors, Entertainers, Musicians and Polticians could even somehow get a piece of the action if you think about it.

Trading situations could also occur.. " I'll swap my Rancor for 5 of your Giant Carrion Spats "

Just an Idea.. It seems Rangers need to be fighters to acquire organics and maybe they dont want to be fighters.... but it doesn't mean they would no longer require some form of combat skill.. Maybe the combat skill can be brought into the Farming scenario in some way or other.

I know alot of ppl would much much rather see the Combat Balance sorted but it's just an idea on another aspect of the game.

Thanks for reading.

When I first opened the post my first thought was that this wasn't a ranger skill, it's more like a rancher. After reading what you had to say, the one thing that I really like is having the majority of the elite crafters working together to build things.

With the JTL and "profession / weaponry balance", we're supposedly expecting to see a lot more grouped combat, be it PVP or PVE... but it sitll leaves crafters pretty well self sufficient, unless ships allow for components from other professions, but thats another story.

One word of caution, watch it with the weapons you're going to get it with the animal rights activists!

Anything that adds content to the game can't be a bad thing.

I don't see this as a bad idea at all as a whole. However, I don't see something like this belonging to the ranger profession. By definition, a ranger is "someone who ranges". Which leaves us with the defition of the verb, range:

1 a : to roam at large or freely b : to move over an area so as to explore it (Merriam-Webster Online)

Since a farm would be a stationary structure, I don't see this fitting the role. A ranger is someone who uses his skills to explore and survive in an area, which in our case happens to be out in the wilderness. The rest of our skills fit this role, this really doesn't seem to. Perhaps it can be part of some new scout/artisan hybrid, but I don't think this really fits ranger at all.

Umm .

I think u meant to post this in the CREATURE HANDLER forum. Herding animals ???

CH's have been asking for this for awhile. Go do a search on their boards and u will see very detailed proposals concerning this.

Again people, I'm a ranger, not a POKEMONER.

If anything was going to be added or changed with the ranger prof I'd like to see it get some sort of combat skills, and minor healing abilities. kind of like using plants and herbs and stuff in the wilds to heal poisons etc.

also some form of ranger/scout armor would be super kewl kind of like a cammo armor with kinetic resistance, a bit like ubese only cammo.

Why does this retarded idea keep popping up?

If I wanted to be a freaking farmer I wouldn't be playing Star Wars.

First time I saw the little 'farms' on Rori I thought "Now THAT would make a break from running about shooting and getting shot at..." Nice idea, well thought through, but maybe one to float in the In Concept or CH forum.

Having said that, I'd fight tooth and nail if this was proposed as an addition to the Ranger tree I mean, it's nice, but it doesn't fit.

I with JB, although I'm not gonna yell atcha so much.

Rangers, in my opinion, are hunter/gatherers. Unfortunately, right now, our skill set leaves us leaning heavily towards the "gatherer" side. This, in my mind is something to be corrected, not something to accentuate.

I have no problem with the idea IF (and this is a huge, major, A-1, Top-priority "IF") the rest of the Ranger ideas come first. I'm all for having a diverse skillset. Nikkidial wrote a similar idea a week ago. I'll say again what I said there: decent idea, but it's not a fix to Ranger. The reason it's not a fix is because I think the novelty of having farming will wear off and you will realize again that you are nothing more than a mobile harvester. Yes, I make most of my money harvesting organics. But that's not what I want to accentuate. If I could take a mission for a tough creature and make a lot of creds bringing down a massive creature, I would much rather do that. (This idea is something I am working on for the Outdoorsman 2.1). I'm sure that I'd still hunt good resources, but I would have a CHOICE. That's the key to all of this: choice.

Let's say everyone goes "wahoo, let's get farming". Okay, we get that, rather than our other revamp. Now, all we do is harvest resources and our time is consumed by being a part of farming. That leaves us with....ZERO choice if we want to make creds.

In the end, Rangers belong in the wilderness. Farms aren't wilderness. Yes, they have animals in them....but that doesn't really make them a Ranger-ish place to be.

Here's what I think: a Ranger should be a hunter first and foremost. Killing high-level creatures, gathering resources for sale when neccesary. We shouldn't be farmers. I know you say you're not a POKEMONER...which, by the way, is a foolish insult. I think you hurt Paks' feelings. anyway, I know you're not a CH because it's obvious you don't know that this is something that they want...and something THEY deserve. They deal with live critters. Our job is to make 'em dead.

Here's what I think about farming:

Rangers' ONLY contribution should be the capture of wild babies. Whether done with a ground trap that allows you to retrieve them later or whether the Ranger would have to draw the creature away with a lure (a new trap, perhaps) and force the baby to run to the farm, I don't know. But that's where our role should end.

Farms should provide a bonus to the growth of babies (perhaps double), so it doesn't take so long for a critter to get tough.

Other than that, I have no ideas about farming mainly because I am not, nor will I ever be, a farmer. If we get your proposal AFTER the main proposal, that's fine. It's a skill I won't use and that others will. There's that CHOICE again. But I don't want to push this idea of farming too much, in case the devs go "oooh, that'll fix Ranger" and take away all choice.

Someone have a word with this human...There's ALWAYS one."If I wanted to be a farmer I wouldn't play Star wars"???? What kind of a dumb, retarded comment is that?? There's fishing in this game... then go play Sim Fish.. etc etc.

My main point is the introduction of the concept of farming. I was wrong to put it in the Ranger forum because obviously that is not what Rangers want. Maybe it should have gonein the CH forum... wherever it belongs.... just wanted to add another factor to the game.

Sorry for bringing up the idea.

Don't let the words of one person discourage you. Some people, myself included, think it's a great idea, but not for rangers. And don't apologize for bringing well thought ideas into discussion. There's hunting in this game too, but I see he isn't spending all his time playing one of Cabela's Deer Hunter games instead of SWG. Keep posting ideas.

Defintely harsh. Ease off a bit mate. Its not a bad idea. As has been noted its one that incorperates a great many classes. I agree rangers should not be on the list, perhaps adding a class off the survey line of artisan, or combine hunting / surveying, something like that.

BTW-you only forage roots and berries really...so ya thats already in there, so poor attempt at sarcasm =P

Someone tries there hand at brainstorming some new idea's (or new to her), who knows her next idea might be something none ofyou have thought of before, utterly fantastic, but too scared to get flamed, so doesn't try. Thats not what this forum is about....
