Thread: Tracking, being a ranger guide

I am still learning and loving this profession and I read the boards every day. So I have to ask <cause I'm naive'> What are the positives and negatives to helping people out by tracking for them? I notice that a lot of rangers reffer to this as if it were a bain to the existance of being a ranger so I'm curious. Just so you know I had a jedi ask me once but i was about to log and I told him I would later if he was on, I was flattered that he'd ask my help <again I'm feeling innocent>. I would assume that hanging out with new folks and playing together could make some new friends and be more fun. On the other hand if its usually a pressure situation and a majority are rude about it, I may not want to waste my time.

Tracking for fun, well, its fun.

Tracking for pay? It's a commitment and you're putting yourself under pressure to deliver.

It depends on how you like to play your Ranger. Some folk like the grizzled old frontiersman approach, holed up in a shack in the backwoods of Dathomir, tough as old boots and just as malodorous. Others like the clean shaved, square jawed big game hunter approach, taking groups of tourists out into the wild, leading them to a devastatingly deadly prey and feeding them to it ^W^W^W helping them bring it down as a trophy kill. Still others are in the wholseale trade, hauling their butt from starport to starport and heading out after just the 'right' meat for their every hungry, rich clients.

How it fits in with your chosen play style is going to depend on which style of player you are.

Old Grizzly will probably take you out and show you the scary critters. For pay. In cash. Up front. No guarantees in this game, greenhorn.

The Big Game Hunter, well, he's got an aftershave habit to feed, so I reckon he'd jump at the chance to demonstrate his knowledge, tell you about all the trophy kills he's done and, yeah yeah, you get the idea

The wholesalers? You gotta be kidding, I've got another 20,000 nuna to hunt down and kill before I log, gotta fill this order, look, what are you doing sending me tells asking me to track...

One thing I would say though. Remember it's YOU that has the skill THEY need. Set the price you are happy with, decide if you like the sound of the client, if all seems A-OK, go for it, if you're not happy with the deal, hey, there'll be another one along soon. Specially now it's open season for pirates, moisture farmers, hermits, graul marauders, anything that drops resources for woookiee armour, oh, and the Black Sun mob...

*** Also, if you're still working up the ranger tree, you don't get any xp from the two hours tracking you're doing for that jedi. You got to weigh up how much that time is costing you.

You forgot to add that most of what the Jedi want to kill is VERY VERY VERY hard to find.

In 2 weeks i have yet to locate a graul marauder on dantoonie, yet i cant walk 50m on naboo without seeing a albatross.

Best advise for this is to NOT promise anything, Look if u want and tell em ur looking but dont go out of your way to make them happy,

You may want to remind a party that you'll probably spend at least 30 minutes to find this thing. After all nomatter where you go tracking is not an Instant thing.

Go for it. Make some rules. Explain those rules to your would be customer's. Be the grizzly and get pay up front. Too many Jedi out there have absolutely zero notion of honor and accountability /boggle! Rules, rules, rules, whatever you want. Seriously. At the worst they'll disagree. You do what you want and they are still one graul marauder SNAFU'ed

I get upset/embarrassed when I can't find what they are looking for. I tried to help my husband by seaarching for the moisture farmer. He used my character while I was at work to search for it. Probably about 8 hours altogether. He found it by driving around on his speeder. When someone asks me to track these things for them all the frustration just kina flows out.

I see tracking as something I use to enhance my hunting abilities but as soon as I or anyone else starts to consider it an "on demand" tool it gets really frustrating to use. Everytime I track and don't fiind what I am looking for it is a let down. Three hours of fruitless searching and I am pretty let down. IF I did track for money I would probably charge less for when I actually found the damn something-or-other then I would for if I DIDNT find it.

Plus other people are impatient. One guys asked me to track in Theed for a Jedi which I said OK to because I had never done it (this was just after the first ones started to unlock). He was really polite about it but after the tenth "Any luck yet?" in an hour I wanted to yell at him. Instead I just told him that sorry, couldnt find him, Im logging now. Anything that makes me rather log than continue what I'm doing is not the thing for me.

But how to explain this to people? Their inevitable reply is "Well then why are you even a Ranger?" /mood grumpy

People, eh?

Oh yeah, meant to say that, while SOME jedi are, well, yeah, ok you know what I mean, some are actually pertty decent. Heck, I even got a nice free healing from a dark jedi last night while I was stood waiting on the shuttle.

As I'd got a buff wearing off I was a wee bit concerned that the 1200 Health points I'd lost to disease would swamp my puny 900 HAM

THEREFORE!

I canhonestly say....

North West quadrant of Dant.... and "Cone shapedtracking area" S, SW, SE from the Imp Base in Dant (about 1000- 2000meters).. Try after server refresh in the mornings.

Good Luck
