Thread: What is so good about Ranger?
there is not a huge advantage to having ranger to complement any combat skills, but as more information about the revamp is being released, more people are going to add ranger to their skill sets.
see the sticky above to read more about what's been released about the ranger revamp.
I'll take some responsibility on Corbantis, though. I've had no less than four members in my guild tell me that they're working on ranger, in part due to my influence. Of course, there may be FS reasons behind it too, or they're just trying to hit the old ego.
Not sure why folks would think it a good alternative for CM unless FS xp is involved; unless the BH's want the tracking skill-it'll give distance and direction of cloaked jedi, although it doesn't give any special ability to uncloak them. From a template perspective, I can't see where they'd view Ranger as better than CM.

Once the revamp hits (always assuming that all goes well), things will be very different....
Playing devil's advocate -
The only good thing about Ranger is the amount of credits you can make now in a short period. A Master Ranger in a grind group can amass millions, yes millions, of units of hide/bone/meat in no time. Selling that for 1 cpu ensures a happy Ranger. Current bids on generic 200 all stats hide on my server are upwards of 3cpu.
The bad parts - The traps don't work for squat. The only special skill that works is /areatrack and that is borked up. No specials. I think that about covers it.
The worst parts - After the revamp - Master Scout will be the monkey maker. rangers will be glorified thieves, altho their traps (IF they work) will help BHs take down marks easily. Wow, they can find cloaked people... that's a large help (sarcasm off).
My alt is going MScout. Add in a master combat profession or two and I will be a lean mean harvesting machine with room for medic to heal myself.
JB
btw, no Ranger left, pistols go next, then BH, then Scout.
On the plus side if you want to become just another glow stick weilder. Ranger will let you turn in your 1.2 million scout XP at a 8:1 rate. After the revamp hits I expect to see that possibly changed.
If you want to be a meat and hidegatherer after the revamp follow JBs advice pick up master scout and and enough combat skills to to hit CL80, enhancing your meat and hidecollecting ability.
Although I still think just getting a harvestor droid will be more than enough to out harvest a master scout if the new mod only hits 100 and they do not inherit the Ranger enhanced group harvesting mods.
I've just ground out my alt character to Master Smuggler / Ranger 4/4/4/x. I'll pick up Master Ranger after the revamp. I'm anxiously awaiting the revamp for both classes simply because I think they would really compliment each other. Crafting Armorsmith made me realize that crafting professions aren't my thing. I think with the upcoming Smug missions and the Ranger revamp will help do a few things for my template.
First, it will extend my range past 32m (Yeah) with the addition of carbines. The concealment will help against BH's when Smugs start going on terms as well. The traps are suppose to be used on NPC's and Players, but we'll see. Static traps are good only if they stumble across them AND don't see you setting them up. Being able to camoflauge other players is cool, but they can lay down sit kneel or stand, so I see this as of limited use except inprepping for an assault on your bases.
I never ground Ranger pre-Cu because I hear the "tent-sitter " grind was as unbearable as crafting. If I had only known how much you could harvest with it, I would've definately gotten it sooner. After reading the boards, I'm sorry to hear the long time hardcore Rangers aren't happy with the changes. Let's hope after the revamp it will have enough redeeming qualities to hold your interests.
