Thread: Ranger Tactics
Hello...
Im a Carbineer/Ranger, i was doing pretty good solo at first, but recently, i havent been doing well at all. I die like crazy, and i cant figure out what to do other then work harder to get my skills up, but anyway...
I was wondering what kind of stat migration would a carbineer/ranger best utilize?
What type of armor set, or custom mangles pieces from here and there, would a ranger best utilize?
What best stat migration would be best for that set of armor?
What traps are best to use... Right now i use adheasive mesh to root, bone spur to get action since thats what i hit most as carbineer, and ranged def down traps for trap practice, im 2 box;s away from master ranger, trap exp isnt hard, but i need to know trap tactics!
Also, do factorys work for making big piles of traps? And what factory would i use...
Anyone who can help with some of these questions, i would much appriciate it!
Thanks!
I only wear armor when I'm attacking humanoid NPCs with blasters... and then its only a minimal set.
I use the phecnacine dart for snaring, I usually pull a yellow/red con creature with this, and kite it around with snare/root until its dead.
Yes, you can use factories to make traps and camps, I'm carrying crates upon crates of my favorites right now. You need an equipment factory, or make the schematic and have someone else run it for you. ![]()
As for other trap tactics, I'm a big believer in using traps as often as possible. Every little bit helps, so make sure you're aware of what the effects of each trap is and then just play around till you find the trapping pattern that works best for you.
I don't use armor. Sometimes a shield, but usually for sniping, not creature hunting. As a rifleman, most of my secondaries are very low, except the mind pool. I figure, in battle, you can never really have a fast enough regeneration to actually buff out damage you are taking, so stim paks work better. Therefore, my secondaries to action and health are very low, but the H-A bars themselves are high, so I can take more damage before incapacitation. Using stimpaks takes up a lot of mind and so does using rifle specials. So, I increased mind stats as much as possible so as to shorten downtime after battle and decrease costs of using mind specific actions. If you use a carbine, you might want to jack up your action stats (I believe) and perhaps the the focus a bit, if you use stims to heal up used up action pool. Experiment to see how much mind you can afford to use up for every time you use a stimpak in battle on average. That way you're not using too much or too little on points for the focus pool.
Whoo! Ok...now, correct me if I'm wrong, and I very well may be, but I thought sharp bone spurs hit the mind pool. Maybe I'm thinking of something else, but I remember bone spur and the noise maker causing mind pool damage. Maybe it changed. Haven't used them much. I generally use adhesive mesh traps and sometimes phecnacine darts.
Now, to hunt, you need to know your animals. Some animals you can hunt and the pack will not bother you, and some animals are social and will help each other. You can usually get three shots off on animal from a far off distance if you are not standing, but if there is a social pack, you will either have to walk close to the animal without your scent masked and wait until you get little ?s...move back some and wait for the animal to get a slight sniff of you...it'll go to investigate, leaving the rest of its pack...keep running back until you two are far enough away from the pack (this might work with scent masked also...some animals are more keen on smells than others). Now, you're good to go. Otherwise, equip a fairly fast gun and start shooting off warning shots to as many animals as possible, kiting as you warn animals away...when you're down to one, trap it and have at it. This is a pretty dangerous method of kiting, since running and shooting are not the most reliable pair and sometimes traps don't work ![]()
Hope that helps somewhat.

As tdastile said, use traps asoften as possible, but be aware of what the effect of each trap is. Remember that our FullAuto special has a chance of blinding, stunning and dizzying a mob. Most of the timeI use phecnacine dart to snare and glow wire to lower defence. If I want to widen the distance between the mob and I, I'll just use ActionShot to stop them in thier tracks, sometimes adheasive mesh.
Also, I've maxed outmy quickness and stamina to counter the HAM cost so I won't incap myself. Adjust your strength to a comfortable level according to your action drain too.
Other than that, pay attention to your surroundings and the type of mobs you're againts. Hilly areas are ideal with the help of terrain negotiations, and different mobs react differently with others so you might get some extra "help" (eg. carnivore types will most likely join in your fight with herbivore types).Always keep mask scent on as well. Hope this helps ![]()

Master Ranger / Master Carbineer
I'm a Rifle Ranger. I have an item factory and with it I've pumped out Field Bases, Adhesive mesh, Glow Wire, and Pheracine Darts.
If I'm going to fight an animal I have no business fighting, I lead off with adhesive mesh. If it doesn't work, I throw another until it does. Once it's rooted, I hit it with glow wire, then pheracine dart. If it's still rooted (and it usually is) I hit it with a mind bleed and get to maximum rifle range. About this time root almost always breaks, but since it's snared, I can pound away with HS3, and if it does get to close, I can just repeat the trap cycle. I also use hills to my advantage, as most creatures can't run near as fast uphill as I can.
Heyas,
I am a master architect likely to pick up the scout/ ranger way of life. Heh, they dont seem to compliment each other too well, but what can ya do?
I have a question about traps. Often when I am fighting (using a rifle, and often not very effectively) I will hit headshot 2 and then be unable to do anything else until that headshot has gone through. I cannot use a stimpack, or kneel / stand / prone or anything else. Is this the same with traps?
What I mean is, in order to damage a creatures mind pool , I'd need to use headshot. Am I able to use traps while doing this?
Cheers for the info
