Thread: Mask Scent and Area Scan, My Experience

I have a friend who says I'm just really REALLY lucky with the game. When people were complaining that they weren't getting any loot, I got loot. Crappy loot, but loot none-the-less.

Now, people are complaining about Mask Scent not working. I played for several hours last night and Mask Scent worked perfectly. Granted, I'm not on one of the dangerous planets (just Naboo and Rori), but none of the creatures broke my mask scent. I did notice that it didn't seem to last as long as it used to, but that's something easily dealt with.

Area Scan was great! I went nudfuh hunting on Rori. Took two missions out and got the lovely 3.2k I get for both of them. Then, I used my Area Scan to find more nests and found two more, which I pounced on and got lots of lovely trapping and scouting xp.

So, it's probably my incredible luck coming through again, but I had no problems with Mask Scent and Area Scan worked very well for me. I am one very happy player.

Or, you just aren't as demanding as most of us are. I mean that in a good way.

Some people have the ability to see the glass half full most of the time. I'm betting you're one of those people.

Good for you, honestly.

Please, keep on enjoying your experience.

All the best.

If someone says maskscent is not working, they don't know what they're talking about. In the Krayt Graveyard last night while camo'd and maskscent, I petted two dragonettes right after another. Then I petted - get this - a red-con Dune Stalker Brawler.

I petted a Dune Stalker. And I'm only +80 camoflauge.

I've got the screenies to prove it.

Not working? Ooook then.

After the patch my Maskscent was broken by CL9 rasps and CL 12 Crazed Durnis in all but three encounters with these mobs on Corellia. Neither of these mob types or CL's had broken Maskscent after I reached Wayfaring IV about a month ago and I hunted a LOT of Crazed Durnis. So I must differ on the point and say thatMaskscent has lost significant functionality. I relied on it heavily for the month prior to the patch, but from my post-patch experience I will now rely primarily on non-Ranger avoidance techniques. At Wayfaring IV the skill really should be as reliable as it was pre-patch. I'm glad you were lucky last night, but I suspect the percentages will catch up with you eventually. Hopefully by that time the fix will be in and Maskscent/Conceal will be back to Maskscent's previous reliability for all.

I played for two hours this morning (obsessed? maaaaybe just a little) and finally got my mask scent broken. I was in an area where there were atleast four nests and a spawn in my 126m menu and when it went down it said it would take another 17 seconds before I could put it back up (a huge improvement to the last time I got my mask scent broken which was a very long time ago where it would take something like a minute). So, in the... 7 hours I've played total, mask scent went down once.

For the record, I am a 2/2/2/3 Ranger.

Three hours game time, fiveMaskscent breaks. Three breaks by Crazed Durnis CL 12, two by rasps CL 9/10 (I couldn't tell which of the rasps broke it and they came in a couple of levels). Zero conceals v. aggressive humanoids in non-mission encounters involving about twenty humanoids. Any aggressive humanoid mob aggroed me upon entering the sixty four meter mark (the usual aggro radius of these mobs from my past experience). Any aggressive humanoid mob aggroed me upon spawningif I was within the sixty four meter mark when they spawned. Conceal was up at all times during the humanoid encounters.

Maskscent breaks by Crazed Durnis and rasps (which I encountered or hunted regularly) for at least the two week period prior to the patch - zero. Humanoids reacted almost exactly as they did without Conceal pre-patch except that occasionally one would not aggro pre-patch. Last night all aggroed, but I consider that an insignificant variation from pre-patch.

With Wayfaring IV Maskscent prior to the patch, I could reliably run near (within 32 meters of) or through (within 5 meters of) aggro creature mobs with only a rare aggro. Stalking happened a lot, but actual aggros were rare if I used the ninety degree avoidance turn pre-patch. Maskscent remained intactincluding stalks. Pre-patch Maskscent breaks, when they occurred, occurred on entering and/or leaving aggro radius (usually 64 meters but some variation depending on mob types) or on remaining in the vicinity of mobs some of whom were wandering in and out of the aggro radius or on failed Tame attempts in which the baby aggroed which automatically broke Maskscent pre-patch. My Maskscent breaks which were uncommonfor at least the two week period prior to the patch were, with very rare exception, post-CL30 mobs or babies on failed Tame attempts turned aggressive. This, I believe, is reasonable for Wayfaring IV Maskscent.

By non-Ranger avoidance techniques I mean expanding the radar to 128m and keeping all aggressive mobs at the edge of that expanded radar. Even without Maskscent I never had mobs aggro me when I kept them that far out. Since Maskscent is checked by very few (if any) mobs at those distances, it should never be broken if it is up and that distance is maintained. If you regularly keep aggressive mobs outside the 64m mark then I understand why you get few or no Maskscent breaks. It is within the 64m mark that Maskscent is checked and becomes a factor in helping us avoid detection except for a few mobs that check it further out (mostly outer rim planet mobs). Quite often when I got Maskcent check experience it was within 32 meters of the mob on starting planets (which I attribute in part to information transfer delay since 64m seems to be the magic checkpoint for most mobs).

At any rate, those are my personal experiences with Maskscent pre and post patch and with Conceal post-patch. Pre-patch I was regularly stalked by various lizards on Tatooine as I ran from place to place, but the ninety degree turn usually avoided actual aggro. I can't remember an instance of having Wayfaring IV Maskscent broken by them except a case of a failed Tame gone aggressive. I did tame a few of them though without aggro. But, I tended to avoid lizards due to the stalks whichdid result in aggros onoccasion. I never did see any Krayts which probably helps account for no breaks.
