Thread: Surviving?

Hey folks,

I'm currious if anyone can give me tips. I'm having a terrible time surviving on my own out there.

I've got the following skills:

Marskman 0-0-4-4
Carbineer 4-4-0-3
Scout 4-4-4-4
Ranger 3-2-1-0
medic 4-4-0-0
squad leader novice (for leading hunts)

But I can't seem to do anything on my own. I've got some 68% kinetic ubese armor and some crates of PSGs. But I can't seem to take down groups of even blue mobs like swarming lesser dewbacks.

I'm curious about the tactics you use in combat. How do you handle creatures. I'm spamming crippling shot and knockdown shots and whatnot but seem to lose all effectiveness when they get in close on me (which most critters do).

Couple that with the fact that armor only works 75% of the time and I'm having a rough time being a solo player. In groups I can do fine. I get doc buffs and don't have to worry about a thing.

I would think... as a ranger though... that I should have some ability to solo fight.

Any help or comments out there? Things you've found to help? Does trapping really work well for you? I don't utilize that at all for the most part.

Thanks for any input you can give.

Phenocine Darts, and Adhesive Traps. Fire off a shot, get charged by creature ,start to kite (if you can) Phen Dart, warning shot, shooot shoot, Adhesive mesh. repeat

Now with some of the white/yellow con BAF mobs it can get a little sloppy,

Use hills/cliffs to your advantage (watch out of rocks in the way , creature warping on your melon)

My memory is kinda fuzzy , right now but iirc phenocine darts snare aka slow, and Ad meshes root creatures

Remember to use Examine for the most effective damage type. AKA Rav Torton = vuln to heat (hint)

I would recommened going to Rori and getting some levilsquall missions, You can practice the tactics out and have some fun doing it

Carbine is argueable the worst weapon in the game, go pistol or rifle, you will get better results. Melee would be better than carbine for that matter.

Carry loads of stims, get pharm 4 and dump the entire diagnostics line, and do not carry first aid past 3 if that.

You are not gonna live if you stand and shoot. Shoot and scoot works well, especially if you have a bleed shot, DoT is good. PDarts to slow em down, Glow wire/juice to increase your attacks effectiveness also help immensely.

Hunt with a buddy, or two. Yeah, the harvest results are down, but you live longer.

Hope that helps ---

Drop something else to get pharm 3 for stim c's. This will make you much more effective in healing yourself.

Okay, a bit of info about my current skill package first off.

Creature Handler : 2/1/1/1

Swordman: 0/0/1/0

Marksman: 4/0/0/4

Master Scout

Ranger: 1/2/2/2

I have 2 different usual tactics the first being when my partner is with me. She's a medic / marksman (pistol)

When she's there to do the healing I tend to examine the creature to see if it's a social or non-social. If it's social I pick out the farthest from the mass and fire a single shot at it then if something else takes notice I /peace to avoid getting them both and deal with the add. Letting my cat assist me in tanking when it gets close and cutting large holes in it with my sword or bashing it with my hammer (depending on it's resistances). I also try to keep a Glow-wire trap on it as well asa phenacine dart. To keep it's defense down and keep it slowed to a controllable fighting pace.

If it's a non-sociable or "scare-able" creature I run at the group to break them up and make them scatter then I simply pick off the straggler or whichever one went out away from the rest of the pack. Use my normal trap set (Glow-wire / phenacine) and whichever weapon is appropriate to the creature.

If I'm soloing, which I do quite a bit of as well. If it's a bit more tricky. I pick my fights very carefully as I have no way of self-healing. I watch to see if they are moving around and if so if any one of them is wandering away from the herd. If so then I've got my target right there. If not then I use the same tactics for social / non-sociable creatures if they are unaggressive. If they are aggressive then I fire a single shot into the one that is farthest away (unless it is a scout for the herd) and /peace to wait and see who notices. If it comes by itself then I simply work it as I would anything else. If it comes in a group then I send in my cat to hold as many as possible in one spot and pick off the others using /threatenshot to make them fall back a bit. Dropping traps on the main target as needed to keep it under control. After the others are scattered I wade in and cut the thing to pieces to keep some of the damage off my cat.

If the above tactics fail or I for some reason don't have my cat with me then It gets a bit touch-and-go.

If that is the case i will not hesitate to use /mindshot (the rifle-bleed) to keep some damage coming as I try to run any adds off with /threatenshot and using the adhesive-mesh to keep the target in place. (Be warned, adhesive has a very short duration as far as I've found). Once they are broke up I will finish off the target and if necessary fall back and drop a campsite to let myself rest. (This is very useful if you have the camps that ward off aggressive creatures.)

I hope that helped some in your quest for knowledge and if I can be of any further service then feel free to look me up on Tarquinas.
