Thread: A Commando now wants Scout and Ranger skills?

Okay, I was browsing the forums and came across this.

http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=commando&message.id=31527

In this thread, a Commando is asking for Terrain Negotiation, which is a Scout skill. He is asking for a Camo skill against NPCs, like our Conceal/Camo skill. He is asking for swimming mods, which should be a Scout/Ranger skill if implemented. And he also mentions but doesn't ask for a humanoid tracking skill which he thinks is BH, but is actually a Ranger Track 4 skill.

I figured it up and if he went Master Commando he would still have about 82 points left. If he Mastered Scout he would have only 4 points left. (Thank you to the Allakhazam websites Character builder).

Do all other classes feel they should get what amounts to being Ranger skills? Should they just cancel the Ranger profession and divide it up among the others. It appears that a few people that are not Rangers sure like our skills.

Sorry just wanted to bring this to our professions attention. Just so we can keep an eye out in case his thread becomes popular. And unfortunately I am going to post to his thread suggesting he pick up the Scout skills instead of asking for them to be added to his profession. I will attempt to be nice and civil in my suggestion.

Have fun all,

I hear this a lot from certain professions like BH, etc. I certainly don't hold it against them. I think the fundimental issue is that beyond a few limited capabilities, Ranger offers nothing much in the way of uniqueness...as such, only a few people see it as a viable stand alone profession. So, many would rather have those few useful skills(tracking especially) integrated into their own trees to avoid, what they feel, is spending lots of points for limited gains.

Thats not the whole reason mind you...this happens with other professions too...its because we only have so many skill points but want to be able to do everything and can't. The soloers especially feel it.

That said, terrain negotiation is not, contrary tocommon belief, isolated purely in the scout/ranger lines. Squad Leader is the first that comes to most people's minds, but its not the only one. Combat Medic also gets terrain negotiation without ever needing to be in scout. And Rifleman gets prone movement bonuses when using the rifle.

So, its not an isolated case, which is why requests for terrain movement bonuses tend to be fairly common in many professions.

Sign...Ranger envy... that Commando is truly a sick puppy. I call it EverCrack-itis - wants to be uber in all things.

Sure he wants all those things. He doesn't deserve them, as he is more or less a dain-bread mass killer who would not know the south end of a north bound rancor from his elbow. Commandos are already a force to be reckoned with in PvP, that flame stuff hurts, and now the Ahnold wannabe wants to wander into our arena? Cooler heads will prevail, don't worry. Boy is sending a wish list to Santa,

As to Commandos, one of my hunting partners is a Commando. She is hell on wheels at killing stuff, but she wisely knows that I can harvest better, trap the snot outta the stuff chasing her around, and as evidenced on many occasions, realizes that Rangers just ain't right when they play tag with rancors. The Ranger realizes that the Commando kicks big butt in killing stuff, loves the xp he gets on the hunting missions, and shares his harvest proceeds. A good time is had by all.

Do not let one moronic lad spoil the entire professions reputation. Rangers and Commandos can get along, and as a team, are pretty mean.

Ah yes... Everyone wants to make full use of their skill points...

  • Without having to use their skill points to do it.

There are Rangers who have made similiar requests:

  • Herbal medicines in order to replace doctor poison cures

  • Herbal medicines to replace medic stim packs

  • Creature handling bonuses

  • Group Terrain Negotiation bonussimiliar to the Squad Leader

We can only hope that the developers vision of the professions is strong enough to keep our requests from dilluting the spectrum... Too much.

I would love Herbal medicine as part of the ranger tree. I have thought about it and it makes sense. But I have never mentioned it because of the fact that although it makes sense it would not be right to take it from the Medics. We can after all choose to be a medic if we please. So no, we should not have this ability, or the group train negotiation. And Commandos should not be able to have our terrain negotiations. BH should not have any form of Rangercamp. Squad leader should nothave our camps either. BH should not have our area track.

We can all dable to get the skills we want, and sacrifice others for it. I am having to give up medic tocontinue my rifle now, this hurts a lot, but it is my decision as to where my points go. So, we should not be asking for too much of the others skills, nor be willing to offer our own. These are the things that make us unique and intersting. If we all shared the same skills that wouldstink, its these things that keepit exciting and fun.

So, the Commando can ask all he wants, he had better not receive. Nor should we expect to get medicine or group controls or even "Ranger Guns". Now, in an Elite-Elite I may be able to see a weaponstree perhaps, though it may not be necassary, just spend the points like I did toward mastering a combat tree like rifle.

This is a bit of a tangent, but I agree with the people who say we should have some form of "herbal medicine". After all, we can forage food, and what is that but stealing a skill from the chefs? Isn't their function to provide a quick boost in the form of food to their buddies in the combat profession? And our forage allows us to find bits of food that, while useful, are less effective than the food that a chef would make for us (potentially - like many people, I've never met a chef in game ). So is it really TOO much to ask to be able to forage a couple other things - less effective forms, of course - perhaps WAY less effective. As well as foraging herbal medicines, maybe we should be able to forage flora components. Makes perfect sense to me, unless of course plants only grow in hydroponics labs - never in the wild. Nope, no plants there. Then they could put the flora component back into camo kits (tell me if I'm a complete jack and I'm wrong that they've been removed. I haven't bothered with that particular ranger skill line yet because I've heard camo is so useless .) Anyway, to complete this completely tangential post, I don't think it's too much to ask for the ability to /forage tiny amounts of less-effective versions of things other classes produce. After all, we already do.

This is the nature of the beast. We as rangers see things from other professions that we would like to have (homeopathic medicines etc). And others see some of the useful stuff we have, tracking and terrain negotiation.

Firstly, I think this says a lot about the ranger profession, if we have so many skills that are useful, then in the broken state that the game is, we should really be happy about what we do have, what we do use and what we will have.

What we lack in damage output, we make up with tactics.

I think NRaas and the Ranger community is doing a great job in putting forward new and fresh ideas, and If a commando wants our skills, (I doubt they will get it) then in this case (jealousy is the sincerest form of flattery)

I feel that BH's should get an NPC-only area track at some level of investigation, at least until our seeker droids are un-borked. I also feel that droid-assisted tracking (something I've seen rangers ask for) is clearly a BH skill if it's ever implemented.

I understand your desire, but get one of us to help you out or even become a partner. I don't know what is wrong with the droids your suppose to use, and I hope they fix them soon for you guys. But the added advantage a ranger partner can givey you is he/she can apply camo to you, so NPC don't even know your there until you take that deadly shot and it is too late.

Just some thoughts.

The person above said they partnered with a Commando and how good they were at killing things.

Well thats true but I say its TOTALLY wrong.

Commandos are Warriors. They should be the best at killing other people in war. They should be the crown jewel of PvP.

But do commandos in real life take their flame throwers and C4 and go hunt lions and elephants? No. Thats what Big Game Hunters do.

Hunt Master, Trap Master, these sound familiar?

A Ranger should be the crown jewel of Hunting and Killing Wild creatures. We should at killing other players and NPC's. Thats the domain of Commandos and Bounty Hunters.

We should be BETTER than commandos at Hunting and Killing creatures.

They should get bonuses to XP when they kill players and NPC's and Rnagers should get minuses when killing them.

Rangers should get bonuses to XP when killing creatures and Commandos and Bounty Hunters should get minuses.

On a Krayt hunt the most demanded class should be a Ranger. On a Raid on a faction base a Commando should be.

Why should Commando and Bounty Hunters be the best at killing ALL things in the game?

In PvP we shouldbe weak...Except, Creature Handlers should have fear in their eyes when a Ranger shows up. Beast Handlers whould have their pets attack Rangers first because if they don't the pets are going to be dead.

AT-ST's should ignore Rangers and head toward that Commando before it knocks out the AT-ST.

Rangers should be the best at Hunting and Killing Creatures.

Commandos should be the best at War

Bounty Hunters should be the best at Hunting and Killing Players and NPC's

Why is this so hard? Everyone should have their great strengths and stink at what the others do.

When I go hunting I go with Wookie Command/Master Critter Handler, and a Master Doctor/Pistoleer. I am a Master Ranger w/ Pistoleer... Occasionaly we get a Master Riflebabe/Master Doctor. So we can have lots of fun, so long as we do the following.

Keep the Doctor Alive!!! When we have two, we keep them seperated!!!

We get good buffs.

I Camo everyone, especially the Doctors, sometimes.. we keep one back, un-noticed. I also make sure my wook's camo is good since he starts the fight with his rancor and then burns the target. Occasionaly a TKA comes with, and we also make sure he is Camo'd as well for his first hits.

It's what we call combined arms.. or team work. We take all of our strengths, and help boost up the weeknesses.. So a commando shouldn't whine, he should just befriend a Friendly Neighborhood Master Ranger.
