Hi guys. I have a little query for you rangers.

I am an active PvP-er. I have recently been told by a holo to master the Ranger Profession. I am already a Master Rifleman and I know that Master Rifleman/Master Ranger is a kick-ass combination. I'm just a little worried about the PvP potential of it...

My question is: will the Ranger Profession be useful at all in PvP situations?

and there was much rejoicing...

No

You get +10 Melee and Ranged Defense at Master, which you won't notice.

Ranger is no help in PvP combat itself. You need a combat skill, you got one, to stay alive.

However - boy oh boy do we kick azz in recon. I reconned a target last nite, exact numbers of NPCs, ranks, who was where - from 200 meters out. No TEF for me. And we sorta can disarm minefields too. (Wonder when the Imps will notice the minefield is not active?)

In PvP combat I have been able to "see" the enemy at 400 meters, massing, get names, and then "saw" them split into two groups to sneak up and flank us. Oh that worked real well - dumb bunnies - as they walked into two ambushes.

I use the Ranger skills to set the enemy up, or at least to inform my team of what is going on. I use my Pistoleer skills to stay alive.

enjoy,

JB

I have used Tracking IV to make up for the kiting advantage that ranged classes have over me. I wouldn't suggest doing it to a large group, but it's great for stealthy, one-on-one hit and run tactics.

From what I can tell, red dots don't appear on radar until they're 128m out, at most. So I'll do a /who imperial, track to find an isolated, unsuspecting and immobile player, and then sneak up until I'm just out of radar range. Then I'll hit the burst run key and charge like a bat out of hell for their last known location.

More often than not, they don't even have to time to run before they're on the ground, and then I can take them out at my leisure. If they are canny enough to get out of range, then I will immediately head in the opposite direction until I lose them.I can keep tabs on them until my burst run refreshes, and then I'll do it again from another angle, in another location.

As a Ranger, you will always have the advantagewhen it comes to situational awareness. Although it will not help in rawdamage dealing potential,it's quite useful if you know how to use the information that youare presented with.

Question: does the tracking ability track covert imperial/rebels with tefs?

Tracking IV will track any player within 500m of you. However, all you see in the resultsbox is a name. You'll have to use /who faction to determine overts in your area, but there is no way to determine if a player is TEF'd.

When I get the urge to PvP, I'll sometimes head to Anchorhead and group up with people who PvP alot. I'll get them to give me names of known imperials so I know who to watch for. If I see a name on my tracking screen that doesn't come up on /who imperial, it's a good bet that they're Covert, or TEF'd if we're lucky.

thanks. this is basically what i was looking for. I knew that rangers get nothing to help with attacks in pvp, i was looking more for strategic and tactical advantages.

thanks again for the info

Heh, that's pretty cool. I don't PvP so I always wondered why I would care to track players. I guess that's why.
