Thread: new idea for ranger ability?

I was out tracking for a bioengineer last evening, and having a bit of trouble finding all the critters he was looking for on Lok. So i started thinking it would be cool if we(as rangers) could make bait to lure specific types of critters.

For instance, if i was looking for kimos on lok and none were popping up, i could use some Lokian meat and bone to make bait. i would think the higher the flavor rating of the meat, the better it would work. you could drop or toss the bait, fall back like 60-100 m and wait for a few. Then the hungry monster , if it takes the bait, would pop up and sart scarfing, you would recieve a message along the lines of "your attempt to lure such-and-such a creature was a success!" then, theBE goes in for his sampling(or the hunting party goes in for the kill or whatever) and viola'! rangers are just a little more respected!

Or is this a dumb idea?

This actually sounds like a good idea... not just a lure that would bring a creature away from a pack of them but instead actually make it spawn? If that's possible with the coding of SWG, then it sounds like it would be pretty cool. You could probably set a bunch of these things and wait for them to bring in the creature you want. I could also see this being a pain in the butt if they didn't do enough testing on it though. So it has potencial.

It would be easy to code... all they would have to do is force a lair to spawn, just like it normaly would, but near the bait. And, even at master, it could never work more than 50-75% of the time, to avoid harvest grinding. They would have to through some other negatives in the mix too, but overall i think this is an excellent idea.

Being able to actually spawn creatures has a lot of griefing potential.

You'd have to make it only work far outside of residential and no build zones. How nice would it be to have people toss down a lure in a player city and set a kimo loose on the population or if a bunch of imps attack an imp city and the rebel rangers use the lure to spawn 10 kimos in front of the attakers. For that matter it would have to not work a certain distance around camps or lairs as well. Camps because someone could toss a lure in or next to a camp and have a large creature start to attack the people in it.Lairs because you could lure a creature that would attack the critters at the lair. Could make aneasy way to complete basic missions. I'm sure there are many other ways that this could be used wrongly.

It's a cool idea but would need a lot of testing and work to make it's way in.

Excellent idea!

We could also make it so you have to be at least 1K from any town, that would keep people from stealing your kill and maybe make it more palatable to the Devs.

Actually, from what I remember of the "we're working on it" set of upcoming skills, there is supposed to be another tracking skill that would spawn the type of creature you were looking for and tell you where it spawned. My guess is that one of the reasons we don't yet have this ability is because of the various ways this could be used to grief, such as those mentioned by Carak above. But basically, the skill's description pretty much described what the original post is suggesting, just in a different manner.

Space is correct, this is already on the list of stuff we want, more or less. Check out the sticky at the top of the forum.

Was thinking that it would be good if a ranger could rife weapons while in/on a vehicle. This would allow the rangers to be a valued member of any party as they could effectivley round up herds of creatures etc etc

Just an idea

Rip it to shreds if you wish

I like is somewhat, although your accuracy should be very low while on the vehical. This would make sense, I mean the Scout Troopers on Endor did it, and I would consider them Rangers.

Sounds alot like the "Joust" ability that Pikemen requested and was turned down.
