Thread: Rangers could be the new player tanks.
So I figured this out while hunting on rori. I'm not on rori often so I forget thier names, but I was hunting those large rabbits and I didn't need a pet to kill them so I just started blasting away at them with my pistol by myself. I soon discovered that for whatever reason they weren't fast enough to keep up with me at my normal running speed and I was able to kill them without taking dammage by just staying out of their range. I realized that this was in effect the exact same thing as using a pet in battle to avoid yourself getting dammaged.
so I don't know if this has been proposed or not, maybe it just hasn't been approached from this angle, but if Rangers had tranquilizer traps that actually slowed an animals movement down to less than running speed, how would that be different from using pets in hunting? Ranged attacks could also concievably be dealt with by a trap that cancels a creatures ability to use their ranged attack. It makes hunting a little more interesting since you gotta at least move a bit, it allows players who are sick of pets to take them outta the equasion, and gives rangers a little more use for other players in the game.

You mean likethe Phecnacine Dart? ![]()
The creature you were hunting was the leviathan squall.

Pets aren't tanks anymore. Now that players have ranged and melee mitigation, players are 10x the tanks of the best CH or BEpets in the game. The other night I saw a nightsister protector destroy a graul in less than a minute. If you want to be a ranger that tanks things, I suggest getting a melee prof along with ranger. As master heavy swordsman I can use a two-handed axe and do little damage to things while taking little damage so people can level on the mobs I'm tanking, or I can pull out my powerhammer and kill an ancient bull rancor in 5 hits.

Actually, the phecnacine dart roots a creature for a very short period of time (even as a Master Ranger), while he's talking about something that just slows their movement for a while. If it lasted longer than the snare effects of the phec dart, I'd be all for it, but otherwise I'd prefer just getting the new traps we were promised back in August.
Also, I haven't ever hunted the leviathan squall, but what it sounds to me like he's talking about are the various types of vir vurs on Rori. They're basically the stronger, higher-level cousins of Corellia's crazed durni in that they give all the same resource types (except that they're Rorian instead of Corellian) and move just as slow as durni. They look almost exactly the same except that they have dark fur with stripes and a few differences in the ears and face. And yes, vir vur are just as awesome to hunt as durni because they are super slow yet theygive lots of resources and xp. I've cleared out entire lairs of them even though at the time they would /con red to me and I haven't taken a scratch, just running circles around the lair.
P darts root? Um... not in my observations and engagements. I pdart anything and everything, well maybe not durnis. I have had many many many creatures attempt to follow me when I was using the Magellan method (run a circle around the lair with the creature chasing you while you fire at it).
Now that I have been using the maskscent/bleed/bleed/peace method the first trap I throw is the Pdart, which slows the critter down so I can shoot and scoot. He still chases me, just really slowly.
The confusion may be if the Ranger is standing still, the creature tends to stand still in the spot where the trap hit. It roars or something and tries to engage from range. Not smart, for either party, as the creature is usually in rangeto thump upon the brave Ranger.
And as has been observed a few times, you can tell when the trap releases by the "Snared" sign above the critter's head. Which is funny in a way, as it still releases after death and harvesting.

if I have 50 traps made, 45 are pdarts, the other 5 are glowwire

Ah, that indeed is my confusion. I haven't used traps in quite a while now, but when I was using them hard and heavy, I was usually prone and not moving, just close enough to throw the trap, so I guess that's why they never moved towards me until after it wore off.
I've only used the 'Magellan method' (nice term, by the way!) on vir vurs because there are so many of them and because they are so slow that traps aren't necessary. But come to think of it, there have been times when I threw a phec dart and noticed the creature moving slowly towards me. I guess I always just figured it was a bug. ![]()
