Thread: 1 Shot Kills

This might turn the ranger into the new broken profession if implemented but i thought i would try and post it.

I'm basing this out a a short story from the book "tales from jabbas palace" (or something like it). in which a hunter was able to to kill a Kryat dragon in a single shot because he knew it weakness. a single shot to the sinus cavity would super heat the the air inside the cavity and cook the brain as it tried to move up. The forhead is to strong for blaster to penitrate easily, but the sinus cavity is fairly weak.

if we do a an Aim (markman 0001) with a weapon with a damage type which the creature (non-npc, non-player) is vulnerable, ang get a +50 on the targeting mod. we should get a chance on getting a criticle hit on the creature killing it instantly. Base thechance of it workingon the skill vs CL so it wont be too broken.

Once combat starts i don't think i ever got a +50 once the creature aggros on me. making this a skill for the patient person. If the creature is walking arround the targeting mod drop a lot. If a creature is lying down, the mod jumps.

This also takes into account the player must examine the taret and choose his weapon to make sure he has one that will actually hurt it.

I saw someone ask about giving a master ranger something like a LLC for cretures only, and another person bring up the ieda of a Bow and arrow. I think the bow and arrow would be cool. but make it need ammunition (LARGE STACKS) but allow the Weaponsmith (or who ever) make them with different arrow head for different damage types. so the range needs to sneak up on the creature, pick the right arrow for the job, pick the right range then fire.

What creatures are vulnerable to Kinetic??

Remember, not all Rangers have ranged weapons. Any combat related skills/bonus we get should allow for all combat professions.

This sounds like an interesting idea...

Maybe a 1 hit kill to a Krayt is a bit extreme, I could see power gamers abusing this majorly. But having a certain percentage chance (10-20%?) to do a large amount of damage might be more fair.. like maybe 4-5x normal damage... just because we should know animal physiology better and can pick out weak spots. It should give us something special, but not overpower us so we become part of the next "uber template" of the month

(it reminds me of the old D&D rule we used to do where rolling a 20 means decapitation, and instant death to your opponent.. did we just make that up? heheh)

I fully agree 1 shot kills on a kryat in the game is a little overkill, I was just using the example from the book. That why i suggested the Skill vs CL.. Kryats being CL300 would make it a really small possibility.

Take the following balance

CL = Creature level

HS = Hunting skill (novice ranger =5 master = 50

Aim = ... well aim

Chance of Crit Hit = (HS / CL) * (aim/1000)

At master ranger with a perfect shot would be 0.8% chance of working on a Kryat dragon, assuming a perfect +50 shot. VS durni (CL10, i'm guessing) is 25%

at novice its a lot harder , a durni is about 2.5 % chance.

Given someone who knows the way chance of hitting is calculated, should be able to figure out a better method.

Once again, we are not all Ranged combatants. I think you have a good idea here, but you need to find a way to apply it to us Melee folks.

Give him a break. What he suggested applies to any combat profession. He did not make creatures resistant to kinetic, devs did. And if devs did that, they either miscalculated and it should be corrected (independent of this new idea), or it was intended and melee is not the best combo for Ranger (less likely).

I say it's a good idea. "Critical hit" is a good term equally applicable to ranged and melee.

And kinetic resists for creatures should be reviewed too.

ok good idea still not the best thing for what the game was designed to be ..... a group/family style play

the game is designed around guilds groups multiple people (which has been reinforced now with the near impossible corellian corvette) if you dont like people or grouping i'm sorry to say but you wont get far. i like the idea of gathering up a task force to go up to this corvett and oblitorate the rebel insurgents there ect..... i would not like this impimented because it destroys the foundation of a Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game

just my 2 cents. dont have to take me seriously

Melee don't have access to the aim command is all. His proposal makes use of the /aim command. I have no problem with a critical hit command. It has been proposed many times in th past and is in the Outdoorsman proposal. TheOutdoorsmanversion, however, does not require you to have Marksman to use it. I like the idea of a critical hit, I only ask that both melee and ranged professions be considered when proposing ideas.

The formula (gahhhh, more math) should be based on Level of Ranger and Level of chosen combat proficiency, be it melee or ranged.

A master in both would have a slight, I am talking 1% chance at dropping some big creatures with one shot, if and only if (gahhhh, a logic statement, another favorite) the creature had 0% resistance to that particular weapon damage type.

No, you ain't dropping a Rancor with one shot wielding an LLC - seems they are resistant.

Smaller creatures give a better percentage chance, until you get down to the low level, which I can pretty much drop in one shot anyhow.

Kills dabblers abusing the system, but is fair to both melee and ranged. Not my fault a lot of animals are kinetic resistant - but a lot are also heat and blast resistant too.

Well, why not just forget the specific Marksman "Aim" and consider a new ranger specfic command like"Critical target" or something.... that will take whatever weapon he/she is currently using, whether it be pistol, rifle, scythe or fist, and attempt a critical hit .

any class of combatant can get a +50 on the targeting mod (what is the correct name for that anyway), I just used the Aim command as a reference because because thats what i use to make sure my first shot hits. having +50 versus a +20 should makes a difference if you are not a master combatant.

It also takes into account that you need to know your weapon and need to know your target.

Paraphrasing from Sun Tzu (forget the exact quote, plus it is in japanese)

know yourself, know your enemy and you need not fear the outcome of a thousand battles.

Also if you make this a Bow and Arrow attribute it balances it for every character. If your shot misses you need to grab your weapon of choice to defend your self against the charging animal.

If not Bow and arrow:

Requirments for this to work

1 - must not be in combat

2 - creature cannot see you (maskscent / camoflage)

for increased chances

1 - at ideal range for chosen weapon

2 - weapon should be a damage type the creature is vulnerable. (or else i see a lot of Master marksman/rangers appearing for a wider choice of weapons).

For the calculation above, it does not take into account the characters natural accuracy. It just takes into account the modifier above the target. if someone knows the formula for normal targeting i can figure out a method to take it into account. This should also be new attack type not a mod on the special of your choice (assuming its for 1 shot kills not a damage multiplier)
