Okay, this is bugging me... and rather than let it get lost in the other threads, I'm beginning a new one.
People have been have been using the theory that since "Ranger has the word RANGE in it, it must mean we need a Ranged Pre-Req". This statement ruptures capillaries in my forehead. The word Range has many different definitions... and they refer to different things (and yes, one defininition refers to the distance between a projectile weapon and its target -- aaah, the beauty of the English language). And guess what? Here's two of the many definitions.
range. (ranj) n
1. The geographic region in which a plant or animal normally lives or grows.
2. The act of wandering or roaming over a large area.
Oh wow, look at that. NOTHING mentioning ranged weaponry. And, don't you think it's possible we're called rangers because we roam/wander in the wilderness/large areas?
On a different note, keeping the Pre-reqs in Scout makes sense to me, and if anything, they could make it Trapping 4 + (Hunting, Camping) 4 too keep the whole "Ranger becomes FOTM" thing down a bit. That said, giving us a specific weapon makes sense as well... and all those other arguments too. There are many other threads that offer reasonable explanations and do a far better job at it than I do.
However, just because the Profession is called Ranger DOES NOT mean that it implies we are a ranged profession.
So, to all you Melee Rangers out there: Keep your chins up, there may be a way to make Ranger a flexible AND effective profession, no matter what your combat profession.
