Thread: Solo Rangers
If you have been very successful taking down large creatures (difficult 50+) what are your tactics?
Pretty much, I always start out with the Phen... dart (cant remember it) which drugs them to slow movement, healthshot1 (pistoleer - drains health), attack.
I can usually do ok against one, but with many, I am renamed "TOAST".
Any advice for big game?
the times i soloed the tougher planets, i had a probot (pre-nerf) so it doesnt really count.
now im a Ranger/CH so again, i dont think my tactics would be much help to you.
i DO however try mixing the traps up. different traps work better on different creatures. i find that the sharp bone spur, and both dars work well on most creatures. and it seems the AOE traps dont seem to work on anything larger very often.
i too am a pistoleer ranger, and was thinking of changing over to rifleman for the sniping. it's too bad i won't have enough stat points to get anything other than novice ![]()
as far as hunting big game...check the ferocity before you fight it. if it has relatively low ferocity, you can use /warningshot to juggle it. i never got too far out of the yavin outpost before getting waxed, so I don't know how ferocious monsters tend to be. But, I'd say you should be able to successfully /warningshot just about any creature under 10 (10 is the highest i've seen successful, tho it took a try or two) and juggle anything under 5.
another idea is to invest 15 skill points into ch (for novice, group, and trick 1) just so that you can have some backup if you are out there all alone and you begin to get overwhelmed. of course, don't do this if you think having a pet help isn't soloing (which some people think, i don't subscribe to this thought line myself though). Heck, you don't even need group, but it does make it easier to keep tabs on your pet's health.
personally i hunt alone most of the time, but i found out yesterday how nice a large group is when you are interested in raising frontiering. up until last night i had to sit in my camp and hope for a passer by, and if none came, it took just shy of an hour to cap the camp. i got like 6 or 7k last night in just a couple of hours! 10 or so more completed camps and I'll be living large in my 'field base' ![]()
Hello...I regularily solo on Lok and other secondary planets without hiding behind a pet or bot....i'm a master ranger and pisolier....you just have to be patient in your kills and it can be done...but, this is the challenge i was searching for in this game...
concerning warning shot...i can assure youthat it works on creatures much much higher than lvl 10...i've used successfully on enraged kimogila's....the problem is that most people wait too long to initiate this shot...do not and i repeat do not wait till the creature is upon you...hey, you're a ranger - use a little intuition to predict it's action...and shot takes time once initiated to fire - a little bit of a delay...but, i found it most successful when fired at a range of 20-30m...the second problem is that many people que so many specials that there is not any way to use this shot efficiently...don't just hit special upon special because by the time you need the warning shot it will be too late to inact....
ok, this is just my method that i've used to successfully solo a kimogila (a normal one, i haven't attempted to solo a giant dune or enraged kimo as this would almost certainly result in a quick death :-)....
i hope this helps....takecare

I have headshot that works well, but doesn't always hit. I added my 2 rifles, and 2 pistols to my hotbar so I could switch back and forth and follow those shots up with healthshot2.
Seems to work pretty well.
As a funny side, I went to Yavin IV solo as well as Dantooine this weekend. Attacked a group of creatures on Yavin. If you have been to Yavin, the trees are very large. I played keep away around a tree after a well-placed healthshot2. As his health dwindled, I kept away from him by running around to the opposite side of the tree. Granted, not the best solution, or the most elegant, but I lived and got 3500 exp out of it.
Thanks all.
Any other good advice?

I went and took a lot of people's suggestions this weekend and got hold of rifle. I am currently working on specialized rifle and have a laser rifle (12-286 damage, 7 sec speed) and an excellent dlt20 rifle (111-176, 3.7 speed).

You need to stick to one of those per creature. Mind only for one or Health only. Mindshot should be preceded with Aim (or macro /aim;/mindshotX). It is best used as the first shot, as Aim does not trip the creature into combate. That way the bleeding starts and lasts as long as possible. My sequence on the really scary ones is:
/maskScent and get withing 50m(I use aTusken Rifle) -
/prone
/aim
/mindShot2
/headShot2
/headShot2
Throw a trap that stops movement and see if it succeeds. I throw the trap at this time as the creature is probably just starting torun at you at this point. Throw another if the first fails and run and /headShot2 on the run if it still fails. If you are not overly concerned about trap exp or the creature is fast then fill the queue with /headShot2 and try to run up a hill. Being on the hill at the start is a good idea as well. If it gets too scary burst run up the hill, but hold on to that till the last, it just means you bit off more then you can chew ![]()
