All I want to do is to build Trap Schematics and run them through my factory. But to do that I need novice artisan to use the general crafting tool, right?
Bumma - cause I really could use those 15 points elsewhere.

What you need to do is get a specialized crafting tool (weapon, droid, and General item is what it's called). You can get these off the bazaar or have a artisan friend make one. I'm not sure if this part is neccesary, but I did it anyway. I stood next to a weapon, droid, general item crafting station, using the weapon, droid, and general item crafting tool. When you make your trap/camp/ whatever now, you should get a menu asking if you want to make a schematic.

*grin* yep have already made 200 traps using schematics and experimenting and all that.
My issue is if I need to keep Novice Artisan to do so. I assume yes, which is a bumma really.
I guess I could make a Billion traps and then loose the skill (if I need the points), but then of course storage is an issue.
OR....
maybe I could make lots of schematics and rename them diferently and then I could just feed them into the Factory as I need em.... *hmmm*

Just saw this posted in Mineras Submission.

Another excellent point that was brought up is that crafting camps and traps creates general crafting xp, and success/failure rates seem to be driven by engineering from the artisan tree. Ranger is not driven by artisan at all, and the community feels that crafting traps should award xp and check against scout/ranger skills, not artisan skills.

So I guess if I do not have Novice Artisan I cannot craft traps.

That is what I have done. I was a novice weaponsmith for a time before I got terribly bored by sitting in a house all day. I love it now because I can sit in a camp all day.
I still have a medium mineral and chemical harvester so I horde tons of materials, gather all the hides and bones I need and create crates of traps and tents.
I too am working on Frontiering 2 but have 4 crates in my backpack. 25 camps, 50 phencadine traps, 25 bone spur darts. A double click away from one appearing in my inventory. Very nice to have this. When we are out and about and need a quick camp, don't need to make one. one is up right away.
Find an artisan with a factory and will do some trading with you for use of their factory. I was gonna sell mine but am looking forward to the day I can crank out high-tech camps in bulk.
I had also thought about selling crates of camps and traps to other rangers for a little money. Do you think it would be worth spending some money to have camps pre-made for you? If so, how much would 25 camps of the different levels sell for? what about different traps?

That doesn't sound right ??
you need novice Artisan to make traps ??
I have it right now but plan on dropping it soon, and if i can't make traps from the result of it then theres no point in becoming a ranger (at least for me).

No, to make traps, all you really need is a generic crafting tool. The higher end machines make better traps.
You simply need a generic crafting tool that anyone can use.

Early on, I realized that I was probably losing alot of General Crafting xp from making traps and camp kits. So, I bought novice artisan just to get an idea of how much xp I was losing/getting. Well, I'm at advanced trapping 2 and frontier 1 and I've bought Engineer 4 and Business 3 with the xp I got from making traps and camps.

You only need a General Crafting Device. You don't need to be novice artisan. You might, however, want to take novice artisan so you can survey for minerals, polymers, etc, to make your traps and later on, the bigger camps, unless you can make enough money from your bones/hides to buy the materials.
If, for some reason, you felt like experiementing on your traps/camps, get the weapon/droid/general crafting device, you can use it next to the big stations in town, or the one that comes with the high tech field base.

oh that's cool - so anyone can use the General Crafting Tool and teh Wep,Droid Tool.
Great! So the only real reason for the Artisan would be for surveying. That's cool... I'll just drop a harvestor down and check the resources available. *grin*
