Thread: A Squad Leader Trying To Understand Rangers

Hello All,
I am a Squad Leader (almost master) on the Tempest server. I've been playing for well over three months now. However, in my time, I still have not developed a good understanding of the Ranger's abilities. Reading the skill boxes doesn't give that great of a picture, so I cut stright to those who have been playing the profession to let them tell me how it works.
If you could please, explain to me where the Ranger fits into SWG in terms of:
- Economy
- PvP
- PvE
- Role Playing
I am a SL with an eye to entrepreneurship...but I need to understand this profession as best I can, before I embark on my business venture. Also...when laying out my idea, I don't want to sound like an idiot by not understanding a professions which I currently *think* will be so critical for my plans.
Thank You!

- Economy: In theory we should be superior harvestors of all creature based organic resources. Unfortunately, our bonus in harvesting is so minimal that someone with only scout level harvesting, and their remaining points in combat/medical professions, can out-harvest us because they can kill more.
- PvP: Absolutely zero role in PvP. The only possible thing we have that we could contribute would be using our Ranger Tracking to help hunt someone down. But because of the time it takes to rescan(and since we can't move while scaning the area) unless the person is standing still, and not indoors anywhere, we aren't going to see a thing. So basically, no use at all.
- PvE: Well, we should be the masters of PvE creature fighting, afraid thats a big zero here too. We are useful for CHs and BEs though who are hunting for specific creatures to sample/tame. But beyond that, we offer nothing effective over scouts unless you want to count our ability to rescue someone from an attack and just get ourselves killed instead.
- Roleplaying: Ah ha, something we can do because we can use our imaginations here(which you learn to use really well when you are a Ranger). We can roleplay nicely as a guide through the wilderness. Knowledgable to the environments and the creatures that live in them. An adventurous outdoorsman.
Just think of us as the Squad Leaders of the woods, only with a marginallyprofitable harvesting ability =)
...I like to be able to use /maskscent or /conceal to wander up to a rancor and give them a /hug...

... If you see a Master Ranger, it is more because of what they want to be than what the game makes them..
