Thread: Hunting Dog

Could you take a look at this rough idea, the main concept is a skill that help rangers in hunting, not neccesarily having a pet. The skill is more important discussion point rather than the form it comes in.

HUNTING DOG:

Basic Description:

A hunting dog would be a non-combat pet and used to retrieve harvests from a corpse or move the corpse itself closer to the player automatically without manual player involvement.

Just thinking about this alittle i can see two different setups that could be used. I will try to go into alittle detail on the concept i think could be fun.

SETUP 1:

Setup one would be having the system automatically harvest your kills. After a creature dies even if you are still in combat your hunting dog/beast would run up to the corpse and harvest whatever resource you previously specified. For example you would be hunting Malklocs on Dath. Before the hunt as you prep for heading out, you instruct you dog you want animal bone. You head out and find a herd of Malks and proceed to attack taking them out one by one. Your dog would run tothe downed corpse and bring back the bone of that animal for you and be automatically added to your inventory. After the last beast goes down you would have all the harvested bone in your inventory ready to go.

Pros: I like this setup in that its something new to the profession. I like the idea of having a companion with me on my hunts. Would save alot of time running around pressing harvest macro on each corpse and would be especially usefull with the fast flying avains such as the skitish peko peko who like to bolt now and then leaving you a long run to the corpse.

Cons: hehe basically i dont like the idea of a dog being able to harvest! I like to think of harvesting as a specilised technique that you learn in scout and advance upon. Its an art form and we are very good at this. Although it would be cool to have our corpses harvested automatically after death i dont like idea that a dog is doing our job hehe. I mean have you ever seen a dog whacking out a butchering knife and gutting an animal in a precise way? hehe as such i think it wouldnt be very imersive from the rp point of view. However this could be worked around by describing the system as your dog runs out, retrieves the corpse and brings back the carcass for you to harvest, all this is done automatically. Obviously this wouldnt work whilst you were in combat so this would be the only difference.

SETUP 2:

Setup two would be the dog/beast is used as an attack skill. The dog runs out and attacks the lower quarter of the animal causing a KD effect or short term snare effect (maybe 5 seconds or 3 for example). The dog would thenreturn to your side. The dog would be much faster than any beast at present, such as the speed of a swoop bike to keep up with you. The dog would NOT be used as a tank or standard attack pet, but would be considered a skill or weapon or attack move. The dog simply charges in, KDs or snaresthe target then returns to you side. This would be very usefull skill in the rangers hunting portolio as it would allow the ranger to better control the battle. A skill that would indeed promote the image of rangers being the ultimate hunters. Use in conjunction with traps, the ranger would be able to have creat control over the battle. Obviously this shouldnt be used in pvp due to the fact it would give us a massive advantage over other combatants, and promote us as a pvp class not a pve class.

Pros: Love the idea that our companion could maul the legs of the target to cause it to fall down for a short period or stop it in its tracks. Would be a very very useful skill i think ALL rangers would be very pleased to have (although this skill could be used in the form of a trap instead of the hunting dog idea).

Cons: Those who choose not to use this hunting dog would not get the ability, although i think most would use the hunting dog if implemented.

Obviously this idea will have impact on CH's so im interested in how it would effect them. Bare in mind this is a not a standard pet you send in to attack or tank a target so will not replace that skill in any way. Think of it as a snare ability rangers have to control the battle situation, its just presented in the form of a hunting dog.

As for harvesting it would probably be better to have a harvesting droid for that function. And its only capable of harvesting at what level you are proficient at. Would just speed things up ever so slightly.

Problem is with having a pet knockdown a creature is that all creatures chase for the most part. All that would do was be an effective form of pulling. Hmm.... Now that sounds good tho.

only thing i like bout it is having a companion while hunting would be cool if it correlated with the /track like if you had dant. herbavore meat it would track such things like bols pickets and thunes that would rock like "here sparky smell it, smell it, smell it , STAY , stay , stay , ...... GO GET EM!!! man that would rock the casbah

Nice posting Owen

I personally like the idea of a non-combat hunting companion.
(I really want to stay as far away from a Dungeons & Dragons "familiar" idea)

Here are some questions, comments, complaints about the good idea of a hunting dog:
1) The dog would inevitably aggro a herd of social animals and be incapped.
2) Would the hunting dog be useful in PvP?
3) Rather than a knockdown, how about a /bark command that would intimidate or taunt?
4) Would there be several types of hunting dogs, or would they be a Huurton or those Lokian doggies?
5) The grouped harvest penalty would apply while hunting with your dog
6) How about the dog would be trained to /fetch a particular animal spawn point
I would find this very useful to tell my dog to /fetch tortons, and then I follow him to a spawn point

Thats all I have for now. Thanks for the idea...its a good one.

Oh..and the boomerang idea is a really good one, similar to the bolo-trap suggested earlier

Owen,

I like the Idea you have with number item #2. After reading it, i started to think how it might work without affecting the CH line, my thought was why not a boomarang instead I did a search and could not find any mention of a boomarang. I think this might fit nicely into what you are thinking.

I hope you may start a new thread on this, as I dont want to hve this one hijacked.

AgonThalia Questions:

1) The dog would inevitably aggro a herd of social animals and be incapped.

I think this would be the risk of using your dog for this purpose for either like you said the intimidate or kd/snare effect. You couldnt just run into a pack and use the skill and be guarenteed to not cause agro to the rest. Id like to see it eventually used with those prety lure traps holo was on about that let us pull one creature away from the group or used with the current rifleman bonuses that let them pull one creature from a pack without social effects. I dont realy like the idea of having your dog crowd control as such, i think i feel bad about sending my companion to his death against a pack of rancors . Id be much happier using this skill as a means to take on a creature one on one. Either allowing you to escape with the help of snare and pheascene darts or used to keep the target at a safe distance to attack.

2) Would the hunting dog be useful in PvP?

I personally think we have more chance of getting this implemented or a varient of if we concentrate on the pve aspect of rangers. It would be very cool to see your dog shoot off and attack the arm of your opponent bringing him to his/her knees. However it does effectivelly give ranged combatants a ranged KD and in some cases a ranged KD/Dizzy combo that could be too overpowering based on our pve roots. Although the intimidate effects could be a nice feature also. Im happy to follow anyone on this.

3) Rather than a knockdown, how about a /bark command that would intimidate or taunt?

I like this idea alot. Personally id rather have a skill that helps me control the combat situation in terms of animals closing in, getting in range etc, but obviously this is the view of a ranged combatant not a melee fighter. Perhaps an /intimidate; /kd effect could be implemented helping both ranges of rangers

4) Would there be several types of hunting dogs, or would they be a Huurton or those Lokian doggies?
I would like to see unique hunting dogs that are a mixture between these two types. It would be cool to have veriety, maybe two orthree with a varience in their appearance and even different strong points (Defensive orSpeed/success rate). Again give me your ideas on what you would like, im simply setting a base for discussion, this is not my idea, its a base for US to work from. Im happy for it to be ripped apart (in a contructive way of course :smileyvery-happy

5) The grouped harvest penalty would apply while hunting with your dog
I expect it would be your choice to group or not so most rangers would not, however i remember a CH proposal asking for the option to turn harvesting reduction off with pets, this would obviously solve our woes.

6) How about the dog would be trained to /fetch a particular animal spawn point

Very cool but as i understand it thats what /track will be like. You will input the creature name then a lair will be spawned and a system that directs you to it. Maybe this could become a part of the track ability?

Thats how i currently see things, hope that helps abit

Firstly thanks

Secondly i wouldnt class anyone as a pest especially you . I like to get lots of feedback on ideas. The details or ideas i put forward are exactly that, the ones that come into my head. There may be ideas out there that are better, more precise, more relevent etc and im very happy if someone spends some time to follow it up, ask questions and put forward their ideas to enhance the overall idea.

Like ive said before i like working from a base upwards. One person cant design the whole thing themselves, there is more than one person in this profession, but one person can provide a base to work from.

This is starting to take a nice shape. I think your responses to Agon werevery helpful to get a picture in my mind as to what you are looking for (and good questions Agon). Also, I want a Slicehound.
